The National Grassroots Innovation and Outstanding Traditional Knowledge Awards are a biennial national recognition instituted by the National Innovation Foundation - India (NIF), an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The National First, Second and Third awards are given in different categories, and several consolation prizes are given depending on the incremental inventiveness and the potential social and environmental impact of the entry. The Lifetime Achievement Award is reserved for an outstanding innovator with demonstrated lifelong creativity, and is not given in every cycle.

Beyond the cash, NIF's real value for many innovators is the incubation support; technical validation, product refinement, patent filing and help reaching markets.

Who is eligible for the National Grassroots Innovation Awards?

You can enter if:

• You are an Indian citizen above 14 years of age.
• Your innovation or traditional knowledge is unaided; developed on your own without technical support from an external agency.
• You are a farmer, artisan, mechanic, homemaker, school student up to Class 12, an ITI or polytechnic diploma holder, a self-taught innovator, or a retired person without science or technology education.

NIF gives special encouragement to women, differently-abled innovators and applicants from disadvantaged or remote regions.

You cannot apply if:

• You hold or are pursuing a degree in a technical field such as engineering, agriculture, veterinary science, medical sciences, pharmacy, biotechnology or biochemistry, or a Master's degree in Science.
• You are a research and development professional working at a scientific or technical institution.

This exclusion is deliberate. The awards are designed to surface innovation from people outside the formal science and technology system. If you are employed elsewhere but the innovation is genuinely your own, you must attach a No Objection Certificate from your employer stating that the work is your original creation.

How to apply for the National Grassroots Innovation Awards

2. Register and log in to create your entry, or download and fill the printed campaign form.
3. Describe your innovation or traditional knowledge in detail — what it does, how you built it and how it helps, and upload photographs or a short video if you have them.
4. Attach proof of your citizenship and age, and a No Objection Certificate if you are employed elsewhere.

You do not need to apply "for money" as a personal benefit, this is a competition and recognition scheme. Entries are scouted, documented and evaluated by NIF, and only shortlisted innovations receive an award. There is no fee at any stage.

How are entries judged?

NIF scouts and documents entries received during the biennial campaign, then puts them through validation. A jury evaluates entries on originality, inventiveness, and potential social and environmental impact. Because NIF is an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology, you can also reach its innovation scouting network (the Honey Bee Network) through the same portal. NIF never charges innovators a fee, and applicants should be cautious of any private agency that offers to "register" them for a payment.

How to check your application status

The National Grassroots Innovation and Outstanding Traditional Knowledge Awards do not run on a portal with a live "track application" dashboard the way a subsidy scheme does. NIF's process is a scouting and documentation exercise spread over the two years between campaigns, so status checks work differently at each stage.

1. Confirm your entry was received. If you submitted online at nif.org.in, note down any acknowledgement number or confirmation message shown after submission. If you posted the form or emailed it to campaign@nifindia.org, send a follow-up email to the same address a few weeks later asking NIF to confirm receipt, quoting your name, address and the date you sent the entry.
2. Follow up by email, not phone. NIF does not publish a public call-centre helpline for the awards; campaign@nifindia.org is the primary contact point. Keep the subject line consistent (for example, your name plus "Biennial Campaign entry status") so replies stay traceable in one thread.
3. Expect scouting and documentation before any award decision. After an entry is received, NIF's scouting network documents and validates innovations before they reach the jury stage. This can take months, and being contacted for more details, photos or a sample is a normal part of the process, not a rejection.
4. Watch for the national award function announcement. Because the awards are biennial and presented at a single national function (past editions presented by the President of India), the only definitive "result" is the published list of winners announced at that function or on NIF's website (nif.org.in) around the event. If your entry is not on the winners' list, it does not necessarily mean it was discarded, many non-winning entries are still retained and supported through NIF's incubation channel.
5. Ask about incubation support specifically. If you want to know whether your innovation is being taken up for technical validation, IPR filing or incubation independent of the award itself, raise this directly with NIF by email, since this track runs separately from the competition result.

Common reasons for rejection

• The innovation is not "unaided". Entries developed with support from an external agency, an R&D lab, or a formally trained collaborator do not meet NIF's core eligibility test. Fix: describe clearly in your entry that you conceived and built the innovation yourself, and avoid listing institutional partners as co-developers of the core idea.
• The applicant holds a disqualifying technical qualification. A degree or ongoing study in engineering, medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, veterinary science, biotechnology, or a Master's in Science makes an entry ineligible, as does employment as an R&D professional at a scientific or technical institution. Fix: this exclusion cannot be worked around, entries from applicants in these categories are filtered out regardless of the quality of the innovation.
• No proof that the work is genuinely the applicant's own. If the applicant is employed elsewhere and no No Objection Certificate is attached, NIF cannot confirm the innovation was not developed as part of that employment. Fix: attach a signed NOC from the employer stating the innovation is the individual's independent, personal work.
• Incomplete or vague description of the innovation. Entries that only name the invention without explaining how it works, what problem it solves, and what makes it different from existing solutions are hard for scouts and the jury to evaluate, and tend to be set aside in favour of well-documented entries. Fix: describe the working mechanism, materials used, and the practical benefit in plain language, and attach photographs or a short video wherever possible.
• Missing or weak proof of age and citizenship. Since the minimum age is 14 and only Indian citizens are eligible, an entry without any supporting identity document leaves NIF unable to verify basic eligibility. Fix: attach a copy of an accepted identity document showing date of birth and citizenship along with the entry.
• The idea is not original or is already widely known/documented. Because judging weighs originality and inventiveness, submissions that duplicate a solution NIF has already documented in an earlier campaign, or that are common traditional practice already recorded elsewhere, are less likely to be selected for an award (though they may still be logged for documentation purposes). Fix: check whether your innovation or traditional practice has already been recognised by NIF in a past campaign before submitting, and if it is a variant, explain clearly what is new or improved about your version.
• Entry submitted after the campaign deadline. Since entries are collected only during a defined biennial window, a form received after the last date for the current campaign (31 March 2027 for the ongoing cycle) is carried over to the next campaign rather than considered for the current one. Fix: submit well before the deadline and keep proof of the submission date, especially for postal entries.
