What is the National Science Chair?

National Science Chair is a high-level recognition-and-support award of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), the apex research body under the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, which absorbed the earlier Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB). The chair keeps India's most accomplished superannuated scientists actively engaged in research and mentoring after formal retirement, so that their expertise continues to strengthen the national research ecosystem.

According to the ANRF, each National Science Chair carries an honorarium of Rs 1,50,000 per month for an initial tenure of three years, extendable by two more years on review. The award is offered under two modes. Mode 1 to Scientific Excellence carries a research grant of up to Rs 25,00,000 per year to support frontier research. Mode 2 — Science Leadership carries a grant of Rs 5,00,000 per year and recognises broader institution-building and mentoring impact.

The National Science Chair is not a personal-benefit scheme that a citizen applies for. It is an honour conferred on a small number of eminent scientists each year through a nomination process.

Who is eligible for the National Science Chair?

A nominee can be considered if they are:

• An active, eminent, resident Indian scientist with outstanding contributions in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or medicine.
• A superannuated (retired) scientist who wishes to remain engaged in research and mentoring.
• Generally more than 65 years of age, or reaching 65 within six months of the nomination closing date.

Who cannot apply:

• Individuals cannot apply for themselves. There is no self-application route, and you cannot nominate yourself for a personal benefit.
• Scientists who do not meet the eminence, residency and age conditions are not considered.
• The award is not open to serving early-career researchers; N-PDF and other ANRF fellowships serve that stage.

Because the scheme runs by nomination, the practical route for an eligible scientist is to be put forward by peers, institutions or the ANRF's own search process during an open call.

What does the National Science Chair provide?

• Honorarium: Rs 1,50,000 per month.
• Research grant: up to Rs 25,00,000 per year (Mode 1) or Rs 5,00,000 per year (Mode 2).
• Tenure: three years initially, extendable by two years, for a maximum of five years.

The chair is placed at a host institution that agrees to provide space and support for the awardee's continued research. Because the award follows the scientist rather than a post, an awardee typically continues at, or moves to, an institution willing to host their work, and the research grant is operated through that institution's accounts under ANRF's grant rules.

The two-mode design is deliberate. Mode 1 keeps a research-active scientist at the frontier of their discipline with a substantial annual grant, while Mode 2 puts a distinguished scientist's experience to work in mentoring, institution-building and shaping research direction, where a large consumables grant is less relevant. A nominee is placed in whichever mode fits the contribution being recognised.

How to apply for a National Science Chair (nomination route)

There is no citizen application form for the National Science Chair. The award is made only through the ANRF's nomination process:

1. ANRF issues a call for nominations on its website, with a defined opening and closing date. Recent calls have opened in mid-year for a roughly one-month window.
2. Eligible nominees are proposed under either Mode 1 (Scientific Excellence) or Mode 2 (Science Leadership), with a full CV and evidence of recent research contributions.
3. The host institution's willingness to place the chair is recorded.
4. ANRF evaluates the nominations through its expert and governing committees and announces the selected awardees.

If you are an eligible senior scientist, watch the ANRF website for the annual call and arrange to be nominated through your institution or peers rather than looking for a personal application link.

Why individuals cannot "apply" for this scheme

The single most common misunderstanding about the National Science Chair is that it is a grant you fill a form for. It is not. It is a national honour, limited to a few of the country's most distinguished retired scientists, and it is conferred by nomination. There is no eligibility path for the general public, students or early-career researchers, and no self-nomination.
