What are the National Startup Awards?

The National Startup Awards are an annual recognition programme run by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. They are part of the Startup India initiative and are designed to honour outstanding startups and ecosystem enablers that have built exceptional products, created jobs and delivered measurable social or economic impact.

Unlike a subsidy or a loan scheme, the National Startup Awards are a competition and recognition scheme. According to the Startup India portal, they identify and reward startups that demonstrate innovation, scalability and impact across a wide range of priority sectors, and give them visibility with government, industry and investors.

What winners receive

• A cash prize of Rs 5,00,000 for the winning startup in each category.
• National recognition and a public platform through Startup India.
• Mentoring and the opportunity to present their solution to relevant central and state government departments, public-sector units and corporates for potential pilots and procurement.
• Connections to incubators, accelerators and investors.

Sectors and categories

The awards span more than 15 priority sectors. Based on the Startup India listing, these include agriculture, education, enterprise technology, energy, finance, food, health, industry, space, security, tourism and urban services, along with special categories such as women-led, rural impact, campus and incubators/accelerators. Categories are refined from edition to edition.

Who is eligible for the National Startup Awards?

You can apply if:

• Your startup is recognised by DPIIT under the Startup India programme.
• You have a product or service already in the market.
• You hold all trade-specific registrations relevant to your sector.
• Your audited financial statements show no defaults.
• You can demonstrate innovation, scalability and impact.

You cannot apply if:

• You are an individual without a registered, DPIIT-recognised startup, the awards are for entities, so a private individual cannot apply.
• Your venture is at the idea stage with no product in the market, or lacks DPIIT recognition, which makes it not eligible.
• Your entity has defaults in its audited accounts or is missing the required trade registrations.

Because this is a recognition programme, the "benefit" is the prize, visibility and connections — not a standing financial entitlement. Startups that do not win still gain from the ecosystem exposure but receive no cash award.

How to apply for the National Startup Awards

1. Ensure your startup has valid DPIIT recognition on the Startup India portal; if not, obtain recognition first at startupindia.gov.in.
2. Watch the portal for the annual application window for the current edition of the National Startup Awards.
3. Log in and open the National Startup Awards application form under the awards section of the portal.
4. Select the category or sector that best fits your startup and complete the detailed application, describing your product, traction and impact.
5. Upload the supporting documents, DPIIT recognition, financials, trade registrations and evidence of impact.
6. Submit before the deadline and note your application reference for tracking through the evaluation rounds.

Applications are evaluated by juries, with shortlisted startups often invited to present before final selection.

How much benefit does the scheme provide?

The National Startup Awards provide a cash prize of Rs 5,00,000 to each winning startup, alongside mentoring, recognition and structured opportunities to engage with government buyers and investors. There is no application fee. The programme's value is concentrated in these one-time rewards and the visibility they create, rather than in any ongoing payment.
