What is PMKVY Short Term Training?

Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) is the flagship skilling scheme of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, implemented through the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). Its Short Term Training (STT) component targets school and college dropouts and unemployed youth, giving them a job-ready skill in a compressed, industry-aligned course.

According to the PMKVY guidelines, Short Term Training covers more than 40 sectors: from retail, apparel and electronics to healthcare, construction, beauty and wellness, and logistics. Each course maps to a defined job role under the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), so the training, assessment and certificate are standardised nationwide. The current phase, PMKVY 4.0, is delivered through the Skill India Digital Hub.

How much does PMKVY Short Term Training cost the trainee?

Nothing. Government-funded Short Term Training is free for the candidate at empanelled centres, with the training cost borne by the scheme on a pay-for- outcomes basis to the training provider. The headline benefit for the trainee is the free skilling plus a recognised certificate, not a cash transfer.

Some batches and special projects add support such as boarding, lodging, travel reimbursement or a conveyance allowance, and a few offer a post-placement or attendance-linked incentive. These vary by project and are not a guaranteed part of every STT batch, so a trainee should confirm the exact terms with the centre before enrolling rather than assume a fixed stipend.

Who is eligible for PMKVY Short Term Training?

You can apply if:

• You are an Indian citizen aged 15 to 45.
• You are unemployed, or a school or college dropout looking for an entry-level skill.
• You have a valid Aadhaar and a bank account.

You cannot apply if:

• You fall outside the 15 to 45 age band.
• You are not the target group, for example, already in stable salaried employment rather than unemployed or a dropout.
• You are a non-citizen, or you do not meet a minimum qualification that a specific job role requires (some technical roles specify Class 8, 10 or 12).

Because eligibility is set per job role, a candidate who does not qualify for one trade may still qualify for a lower-entry trade at the same centre.

How to apply for PMKVY Short Term Training

1. Go to the Skill India Digital Hub at skillindiadigital.gov.in and create a learner account with your mobile number and Aadhaar.
2. Search by sector or job role and location to find courses and empanelled training centres near you.
3. Select a course and centre, and register your interest online.
4. Complete enrolment at the training centre, carrying your Aadhaar, bank passbook and a passport photograph.
5. Attend the full training: 150 to 300 hours, and take the third-party assessment at the end.
6. On passing, collect your NSQF certificate and use the centre's placement support to connect with employers.

You can also enrol offline by walking directly into a listed empanelled centre; the same documents apply.

Is the PMKVY certificate worth it?

The certificate is issued under NSDC and aligned to the NSQF, which means it is recognised by the Government of India and by employers who hire against NSQF job roles. For a first-time job seeker or a dropout, PMKVY Short Term Training is mainly a bridge into an entry-level formal job or into further apprenticeship, rather than a cash benefit. Treat the certificate and placement support as the real return.

PMKVY government-funded Short Term Training is free. No empanelled centre should charge a training or registration fee. If a centre or agent demands money to "enrol you" or "guarantee a job", verify the centre on the official portal and report it on the Skill India helpline before paying anything.

How to check your application status

PMKVY Short Term Training does not run through a single application that gets "approved" or "rejected" the way a subsidy scheme does. Instead a candidate moves through enrolment, batch allotment, training attendance and assessment, and each of these stages can be tracked separately.

• Skill India Digital Hub login: Sign in at skillindiadigital.gov.in with the mobile number and Aadhaar used at registration. The learner dashboard shows whether your enrolment with a chosen training centre and job role has been confirmed, which batch you are placed in, and the batch start date.
• Training centre front desk: Because enrolment is finalised in person at the empanelled centre, the centre itself is often the fastest place to confirm your batch, attendance record and assessment date, especially in the first few days after you register online.
• Assessment and certificate status: After the training period ends, the third-party assessment result and certificate issue status also appear on the learner dashboard once the assessment agency uploads results; this can take a few weeks after the exam.
• Skill India / PMKVY helpline: Call 08800055555 if the portal does not show any update against your registered mobile number, or if a batch start date has passed with no communication from the centre.
• SMS and portal notifications: The Skill India Digital Hub sends batch allotment and assessment date updates to the registered mobile number; keep that number active and check it if you have not logged into the portal recently.

There is no separate "application rejected" status screen for STT enrolment itself; if a centre is unable to place you in a batch, it should tell you directly and suggest another job role or a nearby centre with an open batch, rather than the portal returning a formal rejection.

Common reasons for rejection

PMKVY Short Term Training rarely "rejects" a candidate outright the way a subsidy or scholarship application does, but enrolment can be refused or a candidate can be dropped from a batch for specific, avoidable reasons.

• Age outside the 15 to 45 band: The centre will not enrol a candidate below 15 or above 45. Fix: check the age criterion before travelling to a centre; there is no exception process under STT.
• Already in stable salaried employment: STT targets the unemployed and dropouts; a candidate who is currently in regular employment is generally turned away for that job role. Fix: apply once you are between jobs, or look at other skilling routes meant for working adults such as RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) instead of fresh STT.
• Missing minimum qualification for a specific job role: Some technical job roles (for example in healthcare or certain electronics trades) specify a minimum Class 8, 10 or 12 pass. Enrolling without meeting this gets you turned away for that particular role. Fix: ask the centre for the job role's minimum qualification before applying, or choose an entry-level trade at the same centre that has no such requirement.
• Aadhaar mismatch or unlinked bank account: If the Aadhaar details entered at enrolment do not match the candidate's actual records, or the bank account is not in the candidate's own name, enrolment or any incentive disbursal can be held up. Fix: carry the original Aadhaar card and a passbook in your own name, and get any Aadhaar demographic error corrected before enrolling.
• No open batch for the chosen job role or location: A candidate can be unable to enrol simply because the local centre has no current batch running for that trade. Fix: use the Skill India Digital Hub to check batches at nearby centres rather than only the closest one, or ask the centre when the next batch is expected to start.
• Dropping out mid-training: Leaving before completing the required attendance disqualifies a candidate from sitting the final assessment and receiving the certificate for that batch. Fix: confirm the attendance requirement with the centre at enrolment, and if a genuine personal or medical reason forces an interruption, inform the centre immediately to ask about re-enrolling in a later batch rather than losing the training outright.
• Centres demanding payment: A centre asking for a training or registration fee is not following the scheme's terms, and a candidate who pays under such pressure may still find the enrolment invalid. Fix: government-funded STT is free; verify any centre against the official portal list and report a centre demanding money to the Skill India helpline instead of paying.
