PM-USP CSSS: How to Check Your Application and Payment Status
This is a supporting guide for PM-USP Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students (CSSS). See the main guide for full eligibility, benefits and documents.
PM-USP CSSS: How to Check Your Application and Payment Status
Checking your PM-USP CSSS status happens in two places: the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in) tells you where the application stands, and the PFMS portal (pfms.nic.in) tells you where the money is once it is sanctioned. If your scholarship shows sanctioned but the cash has not arrived, the answer is almost always on PFMS, not NSP. This article walks through both, portal by portal, for the PM-USP Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students (CSSS), the Ministry of Education scholarship for meritorious students from lower-income families.
One-line reminder: PM-USP CSSS pays Rs 12,000 a year at graduation level and Rs 20,000 a year at post-graduation level, by Direct Benefit Transfer into an Aadhaar-seeded account.
Step 1: Check application status on the NSP
- Log in at scholarships.gov.in with your One Time Registration (OTR) number.
- Open Check Your Status on the dashboard.
- Read the stage shown and act on what it means (below).
What each application stage means
| Stage shown | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Pending at Institute | Your college has not yet verified the application | Contact your college nodal officer, an application not verified before the window closes is rejected regardless of merit |
| Verified by Institute | The college has forwarded it | No action; wait for ministry-level processing |
| Pending at Ministry / State | Under review at the Ministry of Education level | No action; monitor periodically |
| Sanctioned | Approved for payment | Check the credit in your bank account, then track PFMS if not received |
| Rejected | Application declined | Read the reason on the portal; common causes are missed institute verification, percentile not met, or income above Rs 4.5 lakh |
The most common surprise is Pending at Institute near the deadline. The application simply never left the college. Chase your nodal officer well before the window closes.
Step 2: Track the payment on PFMS
A sanctioned scholarship that has not reached you is almost always a bank-account problem: usually an account that is not Aadhaar-seeded, is inactive, or is dormant.
- Go to the PFMS portal at pfms.nic.in.
- Under the Payments section, click "Know Your Payment".
- Enter your Aadhaar-seeded bank account number in the field provided and confirm.
- PFMS shows whether the amount has been credited, is under processing, or failed.
According to PFMS guidance, "Sent to PFMS" is the final stage before credit, and payment usually reflects shortly after. You do not pay any fee to check PFMS status or to receive the payment.
Step 3: Fix a failed or missing payment
- Confirm your bank account is Aadhaar-seeded and active — this is the single biggest cause of a bounced DBT. Ask your bank to seed the account if it is not.
- If seeding is correct and the amount still has not arrived, call the NSP helpdesk on 0120-6619540 (8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, all days except government holidays) or the PFMS toll-free line 1800 118 111.
- Keep your OTR number and application ID ready for either call.
Renewal status is separate
If you filed a renewal, its status is tracked the same way under your OTR login. Remember renewal needs at least 50% marks in the annual exam and at least 75% attendance, and the college must verify it before the window closes, for the current cycle, renewal applications close on 31 October 2026.
FAQ
My status says sanctioned but no money; where do I look? PFMS "Know Your Payment" with your Aadhaar-seeded bank account number. A sanctioned-but-unpaid case is nearly always a bank-seeding issue.
Why is my application stuck at "Pending at Institute"? Your college has not verified it yet. Contact the nodal officer; unverified applications are rejected at the deadline regardless of merit.
Which helplines are official? The NSP helpdesk on 0120-6619540 and email helpdesk@nsp.gov.in, and the PFMS toll-free line 1800 118 111. No official will ask for your OTP.
