Scholarship for PM CARES Children: Why Applications Get Rejected and How to Fix It

The Scholarship for PM CARES Children has no open application form, so what people call a "rejection" is almost always a payment that does not arrive. The scholarship, a Central Sector scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment paying Rs 20,000 a year to children enrolled under PM CARES for Children; is credited automatically by DBT to approved beneficiaries. When it fails, the cause is usually an unseeded bank account, a name mismatch, a missing bonafide certificate, or the child no longer being eligible. Here is each cause and its fix.

The one true eligibility bar: no PM CARES for Children enrolment

There is no route into this scholarship from outside the PM CARES for Children beneficiary list. A child must be an approved beneficiary, verified by the District Magistrate and recorded on pmcaresforchildren.in. Enrolment covers a child who lost both parents, the surviving parent, or a legal or adoptive guardian to COVID-19 on or after 11 March 2020. Fresh enrolment is now closed.

Fix: If the child is not enrolled, there is no fix through this scholarship, it cannot add a child. Children who lost one parent only, or a parent to a non-COVID cause, are not eligible here and should look to state orphan-care schemes or Mission Vatsalya sponsorship instead.

Reason 1: Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded

The scholarship is paid by DBT, which fails at the bank if the receiving account, the child's, or a guardian-operated account — is not Aadhaar-seeded. This is the single most common reason the money does not land.

Fix: Visit the bank branch, seed the account with the child's Aadhaar, and confirm the DBT/NPCI mapping is active before the next disbursal cycle.

Reason 2: Name mismatch between Aadhaar and bank record

Even a seeded account fails if the name on the Aadhaar and the name on the bank record differ. The transfer bounces back as a mismatch.

Fix: Make the child's name identical on Aadhaar and the bank passbook, correcting whichever document is wrong, then ask the branch to re-verify.

Reason 3: School bonafide certificate not submitted

The scholarship covers Class 1 to Class 12 and is renewed each year. The district office collects a current-year school bonafide certificate confirming the child is studying; without it the renewal, and the credit; stalls.

Fix: Submit the fresh bonafide certificate for the current academic year to the District Child Protection Unit or district office each year.

Reason 4: Enrolment record incomplete at district level

If the District Magistrate's verification is pending or the district record is incomplete, the DBT list does not carry the child even though the family believes enrolment is done.

Fix: Approach the District Magistrate or District Child Protection Officer in writing, quoting the PM CARES for Children reference number, and ask for the verification to be completed.

Reason 5: Child has completed Class 12

This scholarship stops at Class 12 by design. After the child passes Class 12, this component ends, that is not a rejection but the intended end.

Fix: There is no continuation of this component. Post-Class-12 support comes through the higher-education and education-loan provisions of the parent PM CARES for Children programme, run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.

How to get a stalled scholarship restored

  1. Confirm the child's PM CARES for Children enrolment status at pmcaresforchildren.in or via the District Child Protection Unit.
  2. Fix the specific defect: seed the account, correct the name, or file the bonafide certificate.
  3. Follow up with the district office; escalate to the helplines if the record is correct but no credit appears after the next cycle.
