What is the Student READY programme?

Student READY, Rural Entrepreneurship Awareness Development Yojana: is a programme of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. According to ICAR, Student READY was launched on 25 July 2015 to make practical training, rural exposure and entrepreneurship a compulsory part of the undergraduate degree in agriculture and allied sciences.

Student READY exists to fix a long-standing gap in agricultural education: graduates who knew the theory but had little hands-on field or business experience. By building structured practical work into the degree, the programme aims to reorient graduates towards employability and self-employment: to produce job creators, not only job seekers.

Crucially, Student READY is not an application-based scholarship. It is a curriculum reform. Every student in a four-year UG degree at an ICAR-mandated college or university goes through it as part of the course. The financial element is a stipend paid to students during the practical components, not a benefit that an individual claims separately.

What are the components of Student READY?

ICAR structures Student READY around five broad components spread across the degree:

1. Experiential Learning (EL), a hands-on module in which students run a real production or processing unit and learn the business side of agriculture.
2. Rural Awareness Work Experience (RAWE), a field placement in villages where students work with farmers and understand rural problems first-hand.
3. In-Plant Training / Industrial Attachment, a placement in an industry, agri-business or commercial unit outside the campus.
4. Hands-on Training / Skill development, practical skill modules to build employability.
5. Students Projects, a project component that develops analytical and entrepreneurial ability.

The stipend of Rs 3,000 a month applies to the experiential-learning and in-plant components, for up to six months, as per ICAR guidelines.

Who is eligible for Student READY?

You are covered if:

• You are enrolled in a four-year undergraduate degree in agriculture or an allied science — agriculture, horticulture, forestry, veterinary and animal sciences, fisheries, dairy technology, agricultural engineering or home science: at an ICAR-mandated college or university.

You are not covered if:

• You are not enrolled in one of these ICAR-recognised undergraduate programmes. Student READY is part of the course; there is no way to join it from outside a degree.
• You are a postgraduate or research student, Student READY is an undergraduate programme.
• You expect it to be a cash scholarship you can apply for; the stipend is tied to the practical components of the degree, not paid as a standalone award.

Because Student READY is embedded in the curriculum, "eligibility" is really a matter of being a UG student on the relevant degree. Students outside that system cannot apply for the benefit.

How to apply for and take part in Student READY

There is no separate individual application. Participation happens through your degree:

1. Enrol in a four-year UG agriculture / allied-science degree at an ICAR-recognised college or university.
2. Follow the course structure, which places the Student READY components, experiential learning, RAWE, in-plant training, skill modules and projects; at the prescribed stages of the programme.
3. Register with your college for the experiential-learning and in-plant components as scheduled; provide your bank account details so the stipend can be credited.
4. Complete the components to draw the Rs 3,000-a-month stipend for up to six months and to earn the credits that the degree requires.
