What is the Student READY programme?

Student READY, Rural Entrepreneurship Awareness Development Yojana: is a programme of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. According to ICAR, Student READY was launched on 25 July 2015 to make practical training, rural exposure and entrepreneurship a compulsory part of the undergraduate degree in agriculture and allied sciences.

Student READY exists to fix a long-standing gap in agricultural education: graduates who knew the theory but had little hands-on field or business experience. By building structured practical work into the degree, the programme aims to reorient graduates towards employability and self-employment: to produce job creators, not only job seekers.

What are the components of Student READY?

ICAR structures Student READY around five broad components spread across the degree:

1. Experiential Learning (EL), a hands-on module in which students run a real production or processing unit and learn the business side of agriculture.
2. Rural Awareness Work Experience (RAWE), a field placement in villages where students work with farmers and understand rural problems first-hand.
3. In-Plant Training / Industrial Attachment, a placement in an industry, agri-business or commercial unit outside the campus.
4. Hands-on Training / Skill development, practical skill modules to build employability.
5. Students Projects, a project component that develops analytical and entrepreneurial ability.

The stipend of Rs 3,000 a month applies to the experiential-learning and in-plant components, for up to six months, as per ICAR guidelines.

Who is eligible for Student READY?

You are covered if:

• You are enrolled in a four-year undergraduate degree in agriculture or an allied science — agriculture, horticulture, forestry, veterinary and animal sciences, fisheries, dairy technology, agricultural engineering or home science: at an ICAR-mandated college or university.

You are not covered if:

• You are not enrolled in one of these ICAR-recognised undergraduate programmes. Student READY is part of the course; there is no way to join it from outside a degree.
• You are a postgraduate or research student, Student READY is an undergraduate programme.
• You expect it to be a cash scholarship you can apply for; the stipend is tied to the practical components of the degree, not paid as a standalone award.

Because Student READY is embedded in the curriculum, "eligibility" is really a matter of being a UG student on the relevant degree. Students outside that system cannot apply for the benefit.

How to apply for and take part in Student READY

There is no separate individual application. Participation happens through your degree:

1. Enrol in a four-year UG agriculture / allied-science degree at an ICAR-recognised college or university.
2. Follow the course structure, which places the Student READY components, experiential learning, RAWE, in-plant training, skill modules and projects; at the prescribed stages of the programme.
3. Register with your college for the experiential-learning and in-plant components as scheduled; provide your bank account details so the stipend can be credited.
4. Complete the components to draw the Rs 3,000-a-month stipend for up to six months and to earn the credits that the degree requires.

How to check your Student READY status

Student READY has no online application or tracking portal for individual students, so "checking status" here means tracking your place in the programme and your stipend, not a case number on a government website.

• Confirm your registration for the practical component. Ask your department's READY coordinator or the dean of students' welfare whether you have been formally registered for the Experiential Learning, RAWE or In-Plant Training slot for the current semester. Registration is usually recorded in the college's own academic records, not a central ICAR system.
• Track your placement assignment. For RAWE and In-Plant Training, the college allots villages, farms or industry units to students in batches. Check the notice board or student portal of your own institution for the allotment list and reporting dates.
• Follow up on the stipend credit. The Rs 3,000-a-month stipend (Rs 2,500 ICAR share, Rs 500 state share) is released to the college, which then credits it to student accounts. If a monthly payment has not reached your bank account after the component is underway, raise it with the college accounts section or the READY coordinator first, since delays typically happen at the institution or state-release stage, not because of anything the student must "check" online.

Common reasons Student READY stipend or credit gets held up

Because there is no individual "application" to be rejected, the real failure points are delays or non-release of the stipend, or the practical component not being counted towards the degree. These are the recurring causes:

• Institution is not ICAR-mandated for the component. If a college has not been formally approved to run a particular Student READY component that year, students there cannot draw the stipend for it. Fix: confirm with the department, before the semester starts, that the college's READY registration with ICAR is current for that batch.
• Bank account details not submitted or incorrect. The stipend is credited directly to the student's account; a missing account number, an account not in the student's own name, or an unlinked/inactive account stalls payment. Fix: submit and verify bank details with the college accounts office at the start of the component, and confirm the account is active.
• Attendance or component completion falls short. The stipend and credit are tied to actually completing the prescribed weeks of experiential learning, RAWE or in-plant training. Partial attendance or dropping out of the placement partway through is the most common reason the full stipend or credit is not awarded. Fix: complete the full duration and get the supervising faculty or host organisation to sign off on attendance records.
• State share not released on time. Since Rs 500 of the Rs 3,000 monthly stipend comes from the state government's share, a delay at the state level can hold up the full amount even when the ICAR share has been sent. This is an administrative delay, not a fault in the student's application, and is best escalated by the college to the state agriculture department rather than chased by individual students.
• Documentation gap at year-end. If the bonafide certificate, attendance record or project report for the component is not submitted to the department before results are finalised, the practical-training credit can be withheld even if the stipend was paid. Fix: submit all component-closing paperwork to the READY coordinator well before the academic year-end deadline set by the college.
