What is the Tagore National Fellowship for Cultural Research?

The Tagore National Fellowship for Cultural Research (TNFCR) is a scheme of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. According to the scheme guidelines, it was introduced to invigorate and revitalise the various institutions under the Ministry of Culture and other identified cultural institutions in the country by encouraging scholars and academicians to affiliate themselves with these institutions and work on projects of mutual interest.

The core idea is to bring "fresh knowledge capital" into cultural institutions. Fellows and scholars are expected to select specific resources of an institution, manuscripts, artefacts, antiquities, books, publications, archives, and take up research work related to that institution's core objectives, enriching it with a new creative and academic edge. The scheme is administered through the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), which issues the annual advertisement and hosts the list of nodal institutions.

According to the scheme document, TNFCR is open to both Indian and foreign nationals, though the proportion of foreigners will not normally exceed one-third of the fellowships awarded in a year.

Two levels of award

• Tagore National Fellow. A distinguished scholar of the highest standing, receiving a fixed honorarium of Rs 80,000 per month.
• Tagore Scholar — a scholar with good academic credentials, receiving an honorarium of Rs 50,000 per month.

Who is eligible for the Tagore National Fellowship?

You can apply if:

• You are a distinguished scholar or academician of outstanding merit seeking a Tagore National Fellowship, or a scholar with good academic credentials seeking a Tagore Scholarship.
• You will work on the resources of a specific nodal institution.
• For a scholarship, you preferably have around 5 years of experience in conducting or guiding research, or the equivalent experience in performing or other arts.
• You are an Indian or foreign national; foreign nationals are accommodated within the one-third cap on annual fellowships.

You cannot apply if:

• You want a personal research grant with no institutional affiliation. The scheme is tied to a nodal institution and its collections, so unaffiliated applicants are not eligible.
• You are receiving full funding from another source up to the level of the honorarium, in that case the honorarium is not normally paid, though a fellow may still receive the contingency grant and other facilities.

How much does the fellowship pay?

According to the TNFCR guidelines:

• Tagore National Fellow: a fixed honorarium of Rs 80,000 per month, plus a contingency grant of up to Rs 2.50 lakh per annum for field trips, research assistants and related costs, subject to verification of bills by the nodal institution.
• Tagore Scholar: an honorarium of Rs 50,000 per month. Scholars under non-MoC institutions also receive a contingency grant subject to a ceiling of Rs 10,000 per month.

The award recognises both honour and honorarium "of a very high order", so selection is rigorous, running through an Institution Level Search-cum-Screening Committee (ILSSC) and a National Selection Committee (NSC).

How long does the fellowship run?

The duration of the fellowship is a maximum period of two years. In exceptional cases, the institution may recommend an extension to the National Selection Committee. The Tagore Scholarship similarly runs for up to 2 years, with the same broad terms and conditions as the fellowship.

How many awards are available?

The scheme envisages granting up to 15 fellowships and 25 scholarships in a year. Each nodal institution can be awarded a maximum of two positions: either one fellowship and one scholarship, or two scholarships. The Ministry of Culture retains discretionary power to relax these numbers.

Which institutions can host a fellow?

The nodal (participating) institutions are drawn both from bodies under the Ministry of Culture and from non-MoC institutions with rich cultural resources. They are broadly classified into four groups by specialisation. Examples in the Archaeology, Antiquities, Museums and Galleries group include the Archaeological Survey of India, the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Indian Museum, Kolkata. Non-MoC institutions such as the Asiatic Society also participate. A fellow must choose the institution whose collections match the proposed research.

How to apply for the Tagore National Fellowship

1. Watch for the annual advertisement for the Tagore National Fellowship for Cultural Research, issued by the Ministry of Culture and hosted on the IGNCA website.
2. Identify a nodal institution whose cultural resources match your proposed project, from the list attached to the advertisement.
3. Prepare a research proposal of 1,000 to 1,500 words describing how you will use that institution's resources.
4. Submit the application with your biodata, proof of qualifications and the signed undertaking of terms before the advertised deadline (for the 2026-27 cycle the deadline was 15 July 2026).
5. Await screening by the institution-level committee and final selection by the National Selection Committee.
