What is the PRL Summer Internship Programme?

The Summer Internship Programme is a short research attachment run by the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, a unit of the Department of Space within the science ecosystem under the Ministry of Science and Technology. It gives bright science students a supervised taste of front-line research in areas such as astronomy and astrophysics, planetary and space science, atmospheric science, geosciences, and atomic, molecular and optical physics.

According to the PRL portal, the programme places selected students with a PRL scientist for about two months over the summer to work on a defined project. The value of the internship is the mentorship and hands-on exposure to a national research laboratory, it is explicitly not a paid position. PRL states that "the interns are not eligible for any stipend / remuneration / financial assistance." Limited paid hostel accommodation is offered at around Rs 120 per day on a first-come basis.

Who is eligible for the Summer Internship Programme?

Students can apply if:

• They are Indian citizens pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at a recognised Indian institution.
• They have a minimum 60% aggregate or a 6.32 CGPA on a 10-point scale.
• They study a relevant discipline; optics, laser physics, space physics, geology, geophysics, atmospheric science, chemistry or a related field.

Preference is given to KVPY and DST INSPIRE fellows.

Teachers can also apply if they hold a PhD, have five or more years of experience teaching at graduate or postgraduate level, and can demonstrate a research interest through publications or projects.

You cannot apply if:

• You are not an Indian student enrolled at a recognised Indian institution.
• Your aggregate is below 60% or your CGPA is below 6.32.
• Your field is unrelated to PRL's research areas, or you cannot secure a PRL supervisor willing to take you — supervisor consent is a precondition, not a formality.

What benefit does the internship give?

The Summer Internship Programme provides research experience and mentorship, not money. Interns are not eligible for any stipend, remuneration or financial assistance. Those who need to stay in Ahmedabad can take limited paid hostel accommodation at around Rs 120 per day, allotted on a first-come basis. 2. Contact the project supervisor by email for approval. A supervisor takes a maximum of two students, so approach early.
3. Complete the online application form on the PRL website within the announced window (applications for the 2026 programme closed in April).
4. Attach the required documents, your latest mark sheet, a faculty recommendation letter, the undertaking form and the supervisor's consent.
5. Submit and await confirmation from PRL; selected interns are informed of the reporting date and, if requested, hostel accommodation.

How to check your application status

PRL's Summer Internship Programme does not run a public online tracking dashboard the way large welfare schemes do, so status checking works differently here.

• Supervisor confirmation is the real status signal. Because you approach a project supervisor directly for consent before the formal application, that email exchange is usually your first and clearest indicator of where you stand. If a supervisor has agreed to take you, say so in writing, and confirmed they will support your form, you are effectively shortlisted at the project level even before PRL's central selection is finalised.
• Watch your registered email address. Once the application window closes, PRL corresponds with applicants over email, both for shortlisting outcomes and for reporting instructions to selected interns. Check the inbox (including the spam or promotions folder) you used at the time of application.
• Call the PRL board line for a manual check. If you have not heard back within a reasonable time after the announced selection date, you can call PRL, Ahmedabad on 079-26314000 and ask to be connected to the Summer Internship Programme coordinator or the contact person named on the internship page. Have your application reference, project title and supervisor's name ready, since there is no ticket number system to quote.
• Re-check the official page for the current cycle's timeline. PRL updates the Summer Internship page at the start of each cycle with that year's application and selection dates. If your result has not arrived by the date PRL itself has published for announcing outcomes, that is the point to follow up rather than before.
• No SMS or portal login exists for this scheme. Unlike bank-disbursed or Aadhaar-linked welfare schemes, there is no OTP-based status portal. Email and a direct call to PRL are the only two channels.

Common reasons for rejection

• No supervisor was willing to take you. Supervisor consent is a precondition of a valid application, not a formality added afterward. If you submit without a supervisor's agreement, or the supervisor you approached had already taken their maximum of two students, your application is not considered complete. Fix: approach two or three potential supervisors early, in parallel, rather than waiting on one response, and read each scientist's current research areas before writing to them so your interest looks genuine and specific.
• Academic score below the cutoff. PRL sets a firm minimum of 60% aggregate marks or a 6.32 CGPA on a 10-point scale. Applications from students below this line are not shortlisted regardless of how strong the rest of the application is. Fix: check your exact CGPA-to-percentage conversion using your own institution's formula before applying, since a borderline case can be wrongly self-assessed as eligible.
• Discipline mismatch with PRL's research areas. PRL works in astronomy and astrophysics, planetary and space science, atmospheric science, geosciences, and atomic, molecular and optical physics. An application from a discipline with no real overlap to these areas, or a project proposal that does not connect to any listed project, is typically turned down even if marks are strong. Fix: pick a project from PRL's own published list rather than proposing an unrelated topic, and explain in your application how your coursework connects to that specific project.
• Applying after the window has closed. The application period is short and dates shift every year (for example, the 2026 cycle's applications closed in April for an 11 May to 10 July internship). A late submission is not entertained. Fix: check the current year's dates on the official PRL page well in advance and diarise the closing date rather than relying on memory of a previous year's schedule.
• Incomplete or inconsistent documents. A mismatch between the marks shown on your mark sheet and what you declare in the form, a recommendation letter that does not clearly identify the faculty member and institution, or a missing undertaking form or supervisor consent, are treated as an incomplete application. Fix: assemble all five required items, mark sheet, recommendation letter, undertaking form, supervisor consent and institution ID, before you start filling the online form, so nothing is submitted half-finished under time pressure.
• Not being an Indian student at a recognised Indian institution. The programme is closed to applicants who are not Indian citizens enrolled in a recognised Indian college or university. There is no exception route for foreign students or for enrolment at an institution PRL does not recognise. Fix: confirm your institution's recognised status if you are studying at a newer or less well-known college, since this is not something you can appeal after rejection.
• Teachers applying under the student criteria, or vice versa. Teachers must separately show a PhD, at least five years of postgraduate-level teaching experience, and demonstrated research interest; students are assessed on the marks and discipline criteria instead. Applying under the wrong category, or mixing the two sets of supporting documents, causes avoidable rejection. Fix: identify clearly at the top of your application whether you are applying as a student or as a teacher, and attach only the documents relevant to that category.
