Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban 2.0: How to Check Application and Payment Status

This is a supporting guide for Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban 2.0 (SBM-U 2.0). See the main guide for full eligibility, benefits and documents.

How do I check my SBM-U 2.0 toilet application status?

Track an individual household latrine (IHHL) claim through the urban local body (ULB) you applied to, and on the SBM-Urban management information system at sbm.gov.in, logging in with your registered mobile number and OTP to see whether the application is registered, verified, or paid. Under Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban 2.0 the Rs 4,000 central incentive is credited by direct benefit transfer only after a ward-level inspection and a geo-tagged completion photograph, so the status you see follows that verification chain rather than the date you submitted the form.

Which portal shows SBM-U status?

SBM-Urban 2.0 is administered by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and runs on sbmurban.org for information and sbm.gov.in for the transactional IHHL records; older material also points to swachhbharaturban.gov.in. The key difference from the rural mission is that much of the process sits with your municipal corporation, municipality or nagar panchayat, the ward office that took your application. Several states also run their own urban development department citizen portal for IHHL, so the exact tracker you use depends on your state and city. Ask the ward office which portal carries your city's records if you are unsure.

Rural and urban applications use separate portals and separate registrations. If you applied in a town, do not check on the SBM-Grameen tracker, and vice versa.

Step-by-step: tracking your SBM-U IHHL application

  1. Note the application or reference number the ULB gave you when you submitted the IHHL form. This is the fastest handle for any status query.
  2. Open sbm.gov.in (or your state's urban IHHL portal) and choose login.
  3. Enter your registered mobile number, request an OTP, add the captcha, and sign in.
  4. Open the track application or IHHL status section and read the current stage, or enter your reference number.
  5. If the online record is unclear, take the reference number to the sanitation or health section of your ULB and ask them to read the status from their side of the same system.

What each stage means and what to do next

  • Registered / submitted, your application is logged and awaiting the ward-level verification visit. Next step: be available for the sanitary inspector's visit confirming you have no toilet and that construction is feasible.
  • Verified / approved. The inspector has confirmed eligibility and construction feasibility. Most states then release the incentive in two parts, one on approval or at plinth level and the balance on completion. Next step: build the toilet if you have not started.
  • Completion photograph pending, the toilet is built but the ULB has not uploaded the geo-tagged completion photograph that triggers the final DBT. Next step: ask the ward office to inspect, photograph and upload.
  • Payment initiated / credited — the incentive has been released to your bank account. Next step: check your passbook; if nothing arrives, confirm the account is Aadhaar-seeded.

The pillar guide confirms the ULB "geo-tagged completion photograph" is what "triggers the DBT credit", so a claim stuck before payment almost always points back to that upload, not to the funds.

Checking payment status specifically

The Rs 4,000 central share (plus the state share, which varies by state) is paid by direct benefit transfer. If the portal shows payment initiated but your passbook shows nothing, the most common cause is a bank account that is not Aadhaar-seeded, which makes the DBT fail. Seed the account at your bank branch, then ask the ward office to re-trigger the transfer. Because several states pay in two instalments and add their own top-up, the exact amount and timing differ by state; confirm the notified rate and instalment pattern with your ULB.

Who to contact if the status is stuck

  • Your ward office (sanitation/health section); holds the IHHL application, the verification and the completion photograph. First stop for any status query.
  • Swachhata helpline: 1969, from anywhere in India.
  • WhatsApp support: 8800406449.
  • Email: support@sbmurban.org.
  • CPGRAMS, for escalating an unresolved grievance against the ULB.

The Swachhata-MoHUA app is for cleanliness complaints (garbage, dirty public toilets, choked drains), not for IHHL incentive status, use the ward office for your toilet application. Checking status is free; no inspector or agent may charge to update or unblock your record.
