Udyam Registration: Why Applications Get Rejected and How to Fix It
Udyam Registration rarely "rejects" in the way a scholarship or loan does, it is a free, self-declared registration on udyamregistration.gov.in that generates a number instantly once Aadhaar and PAN validate. What people call a rejection is almost always a validation failure that stops the form: a PAN name mismatch, an Aadhaar OTP that never arrives, a GSTIN-mandatory block, or a duplicate-registration message. Each has a defined fix. This article covers only those failures; the parent Udyam Registration (MSME Registration) guide has the eligibility slabs and benefits.
Why "rejection" is the wrong word here
Udyam has no human approver who accepts or declines a file. The portal pulls investment and turnover from PAN-linked income tax and GST data and issues the Udyam Registration Number the moment identity checks pass. So there is no rejection letter and no rejection reason code to quote; there are only error messages at the validation step. Fix the underlying record and the same form goes through.
The failures and how to fix each
PAN name mismatch (the most common). The name entered must match the income tax database character for character, initials, middle names, expansions and spacing all count. Fix: enter your name exactly as it appears in the PAN/income tax record, and ensure PAN is linked to Aadhaar so the two records agree.
"Invalid Aadhaar" or OTP not received. The registration is verified entirely by an OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number; if the mobile is not seeded to Aadhaar, no OTP arrives and there is no portal workaround. Fix: seed your current mobile number to Aadhaar at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, then retry. During peak load, wait about 60 seconds before resending the OTP.
GSTIN mandatory error. This appears when the PAN shows a GST liability but no GSTIN is provided. Fix: complete GST registration first, or; if the unit is genuinely informal with no GST and no PAN-based liability — register through the Udyam Assist Platform via a designated bank or NBFC.
Duplicate registration message. One enterprise may hold only one Udyam Registration; the PAN already has a number. Fix: do not file again. Retrieve the existing number with Forgot Udyam/UAM No. using the registered mobile or email and an OTP, and add any new activity by updating that registration.
Wrong category on the certificate. Not an error in your typing. The classification comes from the previous year's ITR or GST turnover. Fix: correct the underlying return; the classification refreshes automatically in the next annual update.
PAN validation failed. Usually PAN not linked to Aadhaar or a name/DOB mismatch across records. Fix: link PAN with Aadhaar, align the details, and re-enter exactly as per records; resolution typically follows within a few working days of the record being corrected.
Step-by-step recovery
- Read the exact on-screen message, the fix depends on which validation failed.
- Correct the underlying record (Aadhaar mobile seeding, PAN-Aadhaar link, GST registration, or the relevant ITR/GST return).
- Return to udyamregistration.gov.in and re-run the form; nothing is uploaded, so re-entry is quick.
- If the block is a duplicate, retrieve and update the existing number instead of re-filing.
Beware paid look-alike sites
The Ministry of MSME carries an explicit warning that only udyamregistration.gov.in is authorised. Private look-alike websites charge Rs 500 to Rs 3,000 for the same free registration and add nothing. A "rejection" from such a site is not an official outcome. No official will ask for your Aadhaar OTP.

FAQ
Is there an appeal against a Udyam rejection? There is no rejection to appeal; fix the validation error and re-submit the free form.
My certificate shows the wrong category; can I edit it manually? No. Category is system-derived from your ITR/GST turnover and updates automatically each financial year; correct the return, not the certificate.
Can I hold two Udyam numbers for two activities? No. All activities, manufacturing and services alike, go under one registration; duplicates are liable to be struck off.
