What is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is the single, official registration system for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in India, operated by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises at udyamregistration.gov.in. Udyam Registration replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum and the EM-Part II filing system, and it is now the only document the central government accepts as proof that a business is an MSME.
According to the Ministry of MSME portal, Udyam Registration is free, paperless and based entirely on self-declaration. No documents are uploaded. Investment and turnover figures are pulled automatically from the enterprise's PAN-linked income tax records and GST returns, which is why PAN and, where applicable, GSTIN are compulsory.
What you get at the end
- A permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) that never expires.
- An e-certificate with a dynamic QR code that any bank or department can scan to verify the registration online.
- Automatic inclusion in the government's MSME database, which is what banks, tender portals and the SAMADHAAN delayed-payment system check against.
Why enterprises register
- Collateral-free credit under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE).
- Priority Sector Lending treatment by banks.
- Delayed-payment protection, a buyer must pay a registered micro or small enterprise within 45 days under the MSMED Act, 2006, enforceable through the MSME SAMADHAAN portal.
- Public procurement preference, exemption from Earnest Money Deposit and free tender documents on the Government e-Marketplace.
- Eligibility for MSME schemes such as PMEGP, ZED certification, the Lean Manufacturing scheme and various state-level subsidies.
Who is eligible for Udyam Registration?
You can apply if:
- Your enterprise is engaged in manufacturing, production, processing or preservation of goods, or in providing or rendering services.
- Your investment in plant and machinery or equipment does not exceed Rs 125 crore and your annual turnover does not exceed Rs 500 crore. Both conditions must be satisfied together.
- You operate as a proprietorship, partnership firm, Hindu Undivided Family, limited liability partnership, private or public limited company, cooperative society, trust, society or self-help group carrying on a business activity.
- You hold a valid Aadhaar and, for entities other than a proprietorship, the organisation's PAN.
Classification slabs
| Category | Investment in plant, machinery or equipment | Annual turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to Rs 2.5 crore | Up to Rs 10 crore |
| Small | Up to Rs 25 crore | Up to Rs 100 crore |
| Medium | Up to Rs 125 crore | Up to Rs 500 crore |
Classification is composite: an enterprise crossing either the investment ceiling or the turnover ceiling of its slab moves up to the next category. An enterprise that crosses the medium-enterprise ceilings stops being an MSME altogether.
You cannot apply if:
- Your enterprise exceeds Rs 125 crore investment or Rs 500 crore turnover. It is no longer an MSME and is not eligible.
- You have no PAN and your entity type legally requires one. Enterprises without PAN or GSTIN that operate informally are not eligible for the main portal and must instead use the Udyam Assist Platform through a designated agency such as a bank or NBFC.
- You already hold a Udyam Registration for the same enterprise. One enterprise may file only one Udyam Registration; all activities, including manufacturing and services together, must be added under the same number. Duplicate registrations are liable to be struck off.
- You are a wholesale or retail trader and expect access to the full range of MSME schemes. Traders can register, but the registration is valid only for Priority Sector Lending purposes and does not open up the wider scheme benefits.
What documents are required for Udyam Registration?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar number | Yes | Proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory as applicable |
| PAN of the enterprise | Yes | Required for all entities other than proprietorships that have no separate PAN |
| GSTIN | Conditional | Only if the enterprise is liable to register under GST law |
| Aadhaar-linked mobile number | Yes | The form is verified entirely by OTP |
| Bank account number and IFSC | Yes | Entered on the form; no passbook upload |
| NIC code of business activity | Yes | Selected from the portal dropdown |
Nothing is uploaded. Every figure that matters: investment and turnover; is fetched from government databases, so the accuracy of your income tax and GST filings directly determines the category you are placed in.
How to apply for Udyam Registration online
- Open the official portal at udyamregistration.gov.in and choose "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME or those with EM-II".
- Enter your Aadhaar number and name exactly as printed on the Aadhaar card, tick the declaration, and click Validate and Generate OTP.
- Enter the OTP received on the Aadhaar-linked mobile number to complete Aadhaar verification.
- Select the type of organisation, proprietary, partnership, HUF, private limited, public limited, LLP, cooperative society, society or trust, and enter the PAN of the enterprise, then click Validate PAN.
- Fill in the enterprise details: name of the unit, plant and office addresses, date of incorporation or registration, date of commencement of production, bank account number and IFSC.
- Select the NIC codes for each business activity from the dropdown. Add every activity you carry on — you cannot file a second registration later for the same enterprise.
- Enter the number of persons employed and the investment in plant and machinery or equipment, then tick the declaration.
- Click Submit and Get Final OTP, enter the OTP, and the portal generates your Udyam Registration Number immediately.
- Download the Udyam Registration Certificate from the "Print/Verify" section. The certificate carries a dynamic QR code for online verification.
Existing Udyog Aadhaar holders should instead use the "For those having registration as UAM" link on the same homepage and migrate their old number.
How to register on the Udyam Assist Platform
- Approach a designated agency, a scheduled commercial bank, NBFC or other agency notified by the Ministry of MSME.
- Provide your Aadhaar and basic business details to the agency, which files the entry on the Udyam Assist Platform on your behalf.
- Receive the Udyam Assist Certificate, which allows the informal micro unit to be classified as a micro enterprise for Priority Sector Lending.
How much does Udyam Registration cost?
Udyam Registration costs nothing. There is no government fee, no processing charge and no renewal fee, and the registration is valid for the life of the enterprise. The Ministry of MSME carries an explicit warning on udyamregistration.gov.in that only the government portal is authorised and that look-alike private websites charging fees are not connected to the government.
The only unavoidable costs are indirect: maintaining your PAN and GST compliance, since Udyam pulls its data from those filings.
How to check or update your Udyam Registration
- Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and open the "Print/Verify" menu.
- Select Verify Udyam Registration Number and enter your URN with the captcha to confirm that the registration is live.
- To edit details, choose Update Udyam Registration, enter your URN, and verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile or email.
- If you have lost the number, use Forgot Udyam/UAM No. and retrieve it using the registered mobile number or email and an OTP.
Classification is refreshed automatically each financial year from the previous year's ITR and GST data. An enterprise that moves up a category retains the benefits of its earlier, smaller category for one year from the close of the year of registration in the higher slab; an enterprise that moves down gets the benefits of the lower category from the following financial year.
Common Udyam Registration errors and how to fix them
- "Invalid Aadhaar" or OTP not received, the mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar. Get the mobile number seeded at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra first; there is no workaround on the portal.
- Name mismatch on PAN validation, the name entered must match the income tax database character for character, including initials.
- GSTIN mandatory error; appears when the entered PAN shows a GST liability. Complete GST registration first, or use the Udyam Assist Platform if the unit is genuinely informal.
- Wrong category on the certificate; usually caused by the previous year's ITR or GST turnover, not by the figure you typed. Correct the underlying return; the classification updates in the next annual refresh.
- Duplicate registration message. The enterprise's PAN already has a Udyam number. Retrieve it with "Forgot Udyam/UAM No." rather than filing again.

Frequently asked questions
Is Udyam Registration free?
Yes, Udyam Registration is completely free on udyamregistration.gov.in. The Ministry of MSME charges no fee at any stage and no documents need to be uploaded. Several private look-alike websites charge Rs 500 to Rs 3,000 for the same registration — these are not government sites and paying them gives you nothing extra.
What are the investment and turnover limits for MSME classification?
A micro enterprise can have investment up to Rs 2.5 crore and turnover up to Rs 10 crore, a small enterprise up to Rs 25 crore investment and Rs 100 crore turnover, and a medium enterprise up to Rs 125 crore investment and Rs 500 crore turnover. Both the investment and the turnover condition must be met; crossing either one moves the enterprise up a category.
Does Udyam Registration need to be renewed?
No, Udyam Registration never expires and needs no renewal. The Udyam Registration Number is permanent. The enterprise's classification is, however, updated automatically each year from PAN-linked income tax and GST returns, so the category on your certificate can change on its own.
Can a trader or shopkeeper get Udyam Registration?
Yes, wholesale and retail traders can register on Udyam, but their registration is limited to the purpose of Priority Sector Lending benefits. Trading enterprises do not get access to the full range of MSME schemes that manufacturing and service enterprises receive.
What is the Udyam Assist Platform and who needs it?
The Udyam Assist Platform is a separate route for informal micro enterprises that have no GST registration and therefore cannot complete normal Udyam Registration. Registration is done through designated agencies, mainly banks and NBFCs, and the certificate issued lets the unit be treated as a micro enterprise for Priority Sector Lending.
How do I download my Udyam certificate if I lost the registration number?
Use the "Forgot Udyam/UAM No." option on udyamregistration.gov.in, which retrieves the number using your registered mobile number or email and an OTP. Once you have the number, use "Print/Verify" to download the certificate with its dynamic QR code.
What can I do if a buyer does not pay my MSME invoice?
File a complaint on the MSME SAMADHAAN portal at samadhaan.msme.gov.in using your Udyam Registration Number. Under the MSMED Act, 2006 a buyer must pay a registered micro or small enterprise within 45 days, and the case goes to the Micro and Small Enterprise Facilitation Council for conciliation and, if needed, arbitration.
Is Aadhaar compulsory for Udyam Registration?
Yes, Aadhaar is compulsory and the entire form is verified by an OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number. For a proprietorship it is the proprietor's Aadhaar, for a partnership the managing partner's, for a HUF the karta's, and for a company, LLP, society or trust the authorised signatory's Aadhaar along with the organisation's PAN.
