What is the Uttar Pradesh Widow Pension Scheme?

The Uttar Pradesh Widow Pension Scheme, known in official records as the Nirashrit Mahila Pension or destitute women's pension, is a state social security pension run by the Directorate of Social Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh. The scheme pays Rs 1,000 per month to a widow who has no reliable means of support, so that she is not dependent on relatives or informal credit for basic food, medicine and rent.

Uttar Pradesh delivers the pension through the Integrated Social Pension portal at sspy-up.gov.in, usually shortened to SSPY. The same portal carries four separate pensions: old age, destitute women (widow), divyang (disability) and the Kushtavastha (leprosy) pension, under one login. A widow applies in the Nirashrit Mahila Pension section, and once sanctioned her name appears in the district-wise pensioner list published on the portal each financial year.

Payment reaches the beneficiary by Direct Benefit Transfer. No cheque is issued and no cash is handed out at the block office. The money is credited quarterly; Rs 3,000 at a time; into a bank account that is in the widow's own name and seeded with her Aadhaar number. Quarterly release is the single detail that confuses new beneficiaries most: a sanctioned pensioner who does not see money in month one has not been rejected, she is simply waiting for the quarter to close.

Key facts at a glance

  • Pension amount: Rs 1,000 per month, Rs 12,000 per financial year.
  • Release cycle: quarterly, Rs 3,000 per instalment.
  • Income ceiling: Rs 2 lakh per year for the whole family, from all sources.
  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • Cost to apply: nil, on sspy-up.gov.in.

Who is eligible for the UP widow pension?

You can apply if:

  • You are a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh and can show a ration card, voter ID or domicile certificate.
  • Your husband has died and you hold his death certificate issued by the registrar of births and deaths at the Nagar Nigam, Nagar Palika or Gram Panchayat.
  • You are 18 years or older. The pension is designed for widows below 60, after which the beneficiary is normally shifted to the old-age pension.
  • Your family's annual income from all sources is Rs 2 lakh or less, certified by the Tehsildar.
  • You hold a bank account in your own name that can be linked to Aadhaar.

You cannot apply if:

  • You have remarried. Remarriage ends eligibility, and a pension already sanctioned is stopped when remarriage is reported during verification.
  • You are already drawing another government pension, old age, disability, or a family pension from your husband's government service. Uttar Pradesh pays one social security pension per person, not two.
  • Your family income exceeds Rs 2 lakh a year.
  • You are not a resident of Uttar Pradesh, even if your husband died in the state.
  • Your sons are adult and earning enough to support you, which some districts assess during field verification because the scheme is meant for destitute women rather than every widow.

There is no requirement to hold a below-poverty-line card as such; the income certificate is the operative test. A widow with minor children, or with sons who are themselves unable to provide support, remains eligible.

What documents are required for the UP widow pension?

Document Mandatory Notes
Husband's death certificate Yes From the local registrar; the core proof for the scheme
Aadhaar card Yes For identity and for bank account seeding
Income certificate Yes Tehsildar-issued, via the UP e-District portal, up to Rs 2 lakh
Age proof Yes Aadhaar, birth certificate, school record or voter ID
Bank passbook first page Yes Account must be in the widow's own name
UP residence proof Yes Ration card, voter ID, electricity bill or domicile certificate
Passport-size photograph Yes Recent colour photograph
Declaration of no other pension No Asked for in many districts as an affidavit

Scan every document as a clear PDF or JPG before you sit down at the portal. The SSPY upload boxes have small size limits, and a blurred death certificate is one of the more common reasons a file comes back for correction.

How to apply for the UP widow pension online

  1. Open the official portal at sspy-up.gov.in and choose the Nirashrit Mahila Pension (destitute women's pension) section from the home page.
  2. Click "Apply Now" / New Entry Form to open the fresh application form for the current financial year.
  3. Fill in the personal block: district, tehsil, name, husband's name, date of birth, category, and your mobile number.
  4. Enter the bank details exactly as printed in your passbook: bank name, branch, account number and IFSC code. A single wrong digit here is the most common cause of a failed credit later.
  5. Enter the income certificate number issued through the e-District portal and the death certificate details.
  6. Upload the scanned documents — photograph, death certificate, age proof, income certificate and bank passbook page.
  7. Submit the form, then note the registration number shown on screen and save or print the acknowledgement.
  8. Return to the portal, log in with that registration number, and complete Aadhaar authentication if the system prompts for it.
  9. Print the submitted form and hand a signed copy with photocopies to your District Probation Officer or District Social Welfare Officer if your district asks for a physical set.

How to apply for the UP widow pension offline

  1. Visit the District Probation Officer's office or the office of the District Social Welfare Officer in your district headquarters and ask for the Nirashrit Mahila Pension form. The block development office and the municipal ward office also accept forms in most districts.
  2. Alternatively, go to a Common Service Centre (Jan Seva Kendra) with your documents and ask the operator to file the SSPY application on your behalf.
  3. Fill the form, attach self-attested copies of all documents, and submit it against a dated acknowledgement.
  4. Keep the acknowledgement safe, the registration number on it is what you use later to track the file on sspy-up.gov.in.

How much money is paid and when?

The Uttar Pradesh Widow Pension Scheme pays Rs 1,000 per month. The Social Welfare Directorate does not transfer this monthly. It releases the pension in quarterly instalments of Rs 3,000, one for each quarter of the financial year; April to June, July to September, October to December and January to March. Credits typically appear in the month after the quarter closes, which is why a pensioner may see nothing for eight or ten weeks and then a lump sum.

The amount was revised upward to Rs 1,000 a month from the earlier Rs 500, bringing the widow pension in line with the old-age and divyang pensions on the same SSPY platform. A beneficiary receives Rs 12,000 over a full financial year if she is on the roll for all four quarters. A widow sanctioned in, say, November will only be paid from the quarter of sanction onward, not from the date she applied.

How to check your UP widow pension status and payment

  1. Open sspy-up.gov.in and go to the Nirashrit Mahila Pension section.
  2. Choose Applicant Login, enter your registration number and password, and submit. The screen shows whether the file is pending with the verifying officer, sanctioned, or rejected.
  3. To confirm payment, open the pensioner list for your financial year and drill down by district, then block or town, then gram panchayat or ward. Your name and the instalments credited appear in that list.
  4. Check your bank passbook or use your bank's missed-call balance service. A credit labelled as a state social pension is the widow pension instalment.

Why UP widow pension applications get rejected

  • Income certificate above Rs 2 lakh or an expired certificate from an earlier financial year.
  • Death certificate not attached, illegible, or issued in a name that does not match the applicant's records.
  • Bank account not in the applicant's own name. A joint account with a son or brother is frequently rejected.
  • Account not seeded with Aadhaar, so the direct benefit transfer bounces back even after sanction.
  • Another pension already being drawn by the same person, detected when the SSPY database is de-duplicated across the four pension schemes.
  • Remarriage reported during field verification by the District Probation Officer.
  • Name spelling mismatch between Aadhaar, the bank record and the application form.

Most of these are fixable. Correct the bank details or upload a fresh income certificate through the applicant login, then ask the District Probation Officer to re-open the verification. A rejection for remarriage or for drawing a second pension is not curable, because eligibility itself has ended.

What is the grievance route if the pension does not arrive?

Uttar Pradesh routes pension grievances through two channels. The first is the Integrated Social Pension helpline on 1800-419-0001, which handles queries on all four SSPY pensions. The second is Jansunwai, the state's integrated grievance redressal system at jansunwai.up.nic.in, where you can register a complaint against the Social Welfare Department, receive a complaint number, and track the reply. Complaints about a specific file are settled fastest when you quote the SSPY registration number.

For anything needing a physical hearing. A disputed death certificate, an income certificate the Tehsildar has refused, or a verification report you disagree with. The District Probation Officer at the district headquarters is the deciding authority for this scheme.

The widow pension is verified afresh each year. Keep your bank account active, keep the mobile number registered on the application working, and respond promptly if a block-level officer asks for a fresh life certificate or income document, because an unanswered verification is the quietest way for a sanctioned pension to lapse.

Frequently asked questions

How much pension does a widow get in Uttar Pradesh?

A widow gets Rs 1,000 per month under the Uttar Pradesh Widow Pension Scheme. The money is not paid every month separately — the Directorate of Social Welfare releases it quarterly, so Rs 3,000 lands in the bank account roughly four times a year, in the months following each quarter.

What is the income limit for UP widow pension?

Family income from all sources must not exceed Rs 2 lakh per year. The applicant proves this with an income certificate issued by the Tehsildar through the Uttar Pradesh e-District portal, and that certificate is normally treated as valid for the financial year in which it was issued.

Is there an age limit for the UP widow pension?

The applicant must be at least 18 years old, and the scheme is designed for widows below 60. From the age of 60 a beneficiary is generally moved to the Old Age Pension so that she keeps receiving support without drawing two pensions at once.

Who cannot apply for the Uttar Pradesh Widow Pension Scheme?

A woman who has remarried cannot apply, and neither can anyone already drawing another government pension such as the old-age pension, the disability pension or a family pension from government service. Families above the Rs 2 lakh income line and residents of other states are also not eligible.

How do I check my UP widow pension status?

Open sspy-up.gov.in, choose the Nirashrit Mahila Pension section and use the applicant login with your registration number and password to see the current stage of your file. The same portal publishes the district-wise pensioner list for each financial year, where you can search your name.

How long does the UP widow pension application take?

Expect up to four months from submission to the first credit. The file moves from the applicant to the District Probation Officer or Social Welfare Officer for verification, then to sanction, and payment only begins in the quarter after sanction.

Why did my widow pension stop coming?

The most common cause is a bank account that is no longer Aadhaar-seeded or has gone dormant. Other frequent reasons are a failed annual verification, a name mismatch between Aadhaar and the bank record, or the beneficiary crossing 60 and being transferred to the old-age pension roll.

Do I have to pay anything to get the widow pension?

No. Applying on sspy-up.gov.in is free. A Common Service Centre may charge a small notified fee for assisted data entry, but no official, agent or pradhan can charge money to "get your name added" to the pension list.
