Uttar Pradesh Vriddha, Vidhwa and Divyangjan Pension Yojana (SSPY)
Uttar Pradesh state government scheme
Uttar Pradesh's SSPY pension programme pays Rs 1,000 a month to three groups; citizens aged 60 and above, widows, and persons with at least 40 per cent disability: released as quarterly instalments of Rs 3,000 by direct benefit transfer. Applications are filed free of cost on the integrated pension portal sspy-up.gov.in.
What is the SSPY pension programme in Uttar Pradesh?
The Samaj Kalyan Vibhag pension portal of Uttar Pradesh, known by its address sspy-up.gov.in, brings three separate state pensions onto one application system:
- Vriddhavastha Pension; old age pension, run by the Directorate of Social Welfare, for citizens aged 60 and above.
- Nirashrit Mahila Pension; widow pension, often called Vidhwa Pension, run by the Directorate of Women Welfare.
- Divyangjan Pension, disability pension, run by the Directorate of Divyangjan Empowerment, for persons with at least 40 per cent disability.
All three pay Rs 1,000 per month, released as quarterly instalments of Rs 3,000 through direct benefit transfer into the beneficiary's own Aadhaar-seeded bank account. The three schemes have different departments, different sanctioning officers and different documents, but one portal, one application format and one payment mechanism. That is the practical value of SSPY: an applicant no longer has to know which directorate owns their case.
The state pension sits on top of central assistance under the National Social Assistance Programme, and the beneficiary sees a single consolidated amount rather than a central and a state share. Nothing is deducted from the Rs 1,000.
Key features
- Rs 1,000 a month, or Rs 12,000 a year, for each of the three pensions.
- Paid quarterly, not monthly, in instalments of Rs 3,000.
- Direct benefit transfer to an Aadhaar-seeded account in the beneficiary's name.
- One online application system at sspy-up.gov.in for all three pensions.
- No application fee at any stage.
Who is eligible for the UP pension schemes?
Eligibility differs by pension, but two conditions are common to all three: the applicant must be a resident of Uttar Pradesh, and the family income must be within the limit fixed for the scheme. The income limit is certified by the tehsil on an income certificate and has historically been set separately for rural and urban applicants; confirm the figure currently in force on sspy-up.gov.in or at your block office before you apply, because it has been revised more than once.
Old age pension, you can apply if:
- You are 60 years or above.
- Your family income is within the limit notified for the scheme.
- You reside in Uttar Pradesh.
Widow pension. You can apply if:
- You are a widow, with your husband's death certificate available.
- You are above 18 years of age.
- Your family income is within the notified limit.
Divyangjan pension. You can apply if:
- You have a disability of 40 per cent or more, certified by a competent government medical board.
- You are above 18 years of age.
- Your family income is within the notified limit.
You are not eligible, under any of the three, if:
- You already draw a government service pension, a family pension, or a pension from any other government scheme. Only one pension is permitted.
- You are already drawing another SSPY pension. A widow aged 62, for example, must choose between the widow pension and the old age pension, not take both.
- Your certified family income exceeds the limit for the scheme.
- You are not a resident of Uttar Pradesh.
- For the widow pension specifically, you have remarried. Remarriage ends eligibility immediately.
- For the Divyangjan pension specifically, your disability is certified below 40 per cent, or the certificate is from a private practitioner.

How to apply for the UP pension online
- Open sspy-up.gov.in and choose your pension — Vriddhavastha (old age), Nirashrit Mahila (widow) or Divyangjan.
- Select the online application option and read the instruction page, which lists the current income limit and document requirements for that pension.
- Fill in personal details: name exactly as on Aadhaar, father's or husband's name, date of birth, category, district, block or urban body, and full address.
- Enter the bank details: account number, IFSC code and branch name. The account must be in the applicant's own name and seeded with Aadhaar.
- Enter the income certificate number and its issue date, plus the disability certificate number or the death certificate details where applicable.
- Upload the photograph and supporting documents in the formats the portal specifies.
- Submit the form and save the registration number displayed on the acknowledgement. Print or photograph this screen.
- Take the printed application with photocopies of all documents to the block development office (rural) or the sub-divisional magistrate / municipal office (urban) for verification within the period stated on the acknowledgement.
How to apply offline
- Visit the district social welfare office, the block development office, or the district Divyangjan empowerment office, depending on your pension.
- Ask for help filing the online application, the system is online-first, so the office enters the form for walk-in applicants rather than accepting a paper file.
- Submit self-attested photocopies of Aadhaar, bank passbook, income certificate and the pension-specific certificate.
- Collect the acknowledgement carrying the registration number.
A Jan Seva Kendra or Common Service Centre can also file the application. Only the government-notified service charge applies; nothing more is payable.
How is the pension paid?
Uttar Pradesh releases the pension quarterly. A sanctioned beneficiary receives Rs 3,000 per quarter, covering three months at Rs 1,000 each, paid directly into the bank account through direct benefit transfer. Payment is made in batches after the department completes the quarter's verification and fund release, so credits do not arrive on a fixed calendar date.
A first-time beneficiary usually sees the first credit only after the sanction is issued and the account is validated by the bank. If your neighbour has been credited and you have not, the difference is almost always at the bank validation stage rather than at the sanction stage.
How to check your pension status
- Open sspy-up.gov.in and select your pension type.
- Use the beneficiary login or the application status option and enter your registration or application number.
- Alternatively, open the pensioner list and drill down district, block or urban body, and gram panchayat to find your name and payment record.
- If your name appears in the list but no money has arrived, the problem is the bank account. Take your passbook to the branch and ask them to confirm the account is active and Aadhaar-seeded.
Why pensions stop, and how to fix it
- Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded. The commonest cause. Fixed at the bank branch in a single visit.
- Name mismatch between Aadhaar and the bank record; correct the bank record, since Aadhaar is treated as the reference.
- Account closed or dormant. Reactivate it, or update the new account number through the portal's correction option.
- Annual verification not done. The department periodically re-verifies beneficiaries; ignoring the verification notice suspends payment.
- Income certificate expired or found to overstate eligibility.
- Beneficiary reported deceased, remarried, or drawing another pension.
In most of these cases the pension resumes and arrears are released once the underlying record is corrected, so raise the correction rather than filing a fresh application, which would create a duplicate.
Help and grievance redressal
- Block development office or district social welfare office: first stop for a stalled or rejected file.
- District Probation Office for widow pension queries and the District Divyangjan Empowerment Officer for disability pension queries.
- Jansunwai-Samadhan portal, jansunwai.up.nic.in; register a complaint online using mobile OTP, track it with your registered mobile number, and send a reminder if it is not resolved. The portal also has an Android app for citizens.
Applying is free, the pension is paid only by bank transfer, and no official will ever ask for your OTP or for cash to sanction a pension.
Common reasons for rejection
The page already explains why a sanctioned pension stops. The reasons below are different: they are why a fresh SSPY application is refused at the verification stage, before any sanction is issued.
- Income certificate shows income above the notified limit. The tehsil's own certificate is what the verifying officer checks, not the applicant's claim. If your household income has changed since the certificate was issued, get a fresh one before applying rather than submitting an old certificate and hoping it passes.
- Bank account is not in the applicant's own name, or is a joint account. SSPY pays into the beneficiary's individual, Aadhaar-seeded account. A joint account, or an account held by a son, daughter or other family member on the applicant's behalf, is rejected at verification. Open or convert to a sole account in the applicant's own name first.
- Age proof does not match the age claimed for old age pension. A mismatch between Aadhaar's date of birth and a school certificate or voter ID, or an age that clearly falls short of 60, leads to rejection rather than a query. Carry only documents that agree with each other on date of birth.
- Disability certificate below 40 per cent, or issued by a private doctor. Divyangjan pension accepts only a certificate from a competent government medical board showing 40 per cent or more. A private hospital's certificate, or a government certificate showing a lower percentage, is rejected; the applicant has to get reassessed by the district medical board.
- Death certificate missing or not from the civil registrar, for widow pension. A death certificate issued by a hospital alone, without registration with the birth and death registrar, is usually not accepted. Get the death registered and obtain the registrar's certificate.
- Applicant already draws another pension. The block or tehsil office cross-checks against other pension and service records during verification. An application from someone already receiving a government service pension, family pension, or another SSPY pension is rejected outright; only one pension is permitted per person.
- Widow applicant has remarried. Verification at the panchayat or ward level typically surfaces a remarriage, and the application is rejected on that ground alone, regardless of how the other documents look.
- Applicant is not a verified resident of Uttar Pradesh. A recent move into the state, or an address that the verifying official cannot confirm through local records, is a common ground for rejection, particularly for applicants without a long-standing ration card or voter record at the given address.
- Verification visit could not confirm the applicant. Many rejections happen simply because the field verification (by the lekhpal, ward member or block official) could not locate or confirm the applicant at the given address. Being available, or having a neighbour or panchayat member confirm identity, when verification is due avoids this.
- Duplicate application. Applying again while an earlier application from the same person is still pending, instead of tracking the existing one through the status option, gets flagged and rejected as a duplicate.
If an application is rejected, the correct step is to fix the specific document or detail that caused it and reapply, rather than repeatedly resubmitting the same form. For a rejection you believe is wrong, take the rejection order to the block development office or district social welfare office, or raise it on the Jansunwai-Samadhan portal, jansunwai.up.nic.in, rather than filing a fresh application from scratch.

Frequently asked questions
How much pension does Uttar Pradesh pay under SSPY?
Uttar Pradesh pays Rs 1,000 per month under each of the three pensions — old age, widow and Divyangjan. The money is released in quarterly instalments of Rs 3,000 directly into the beneficiary's Aadhaar-seeded bank account, not every month.
What is the minimum age for old age pension in UP?
The applicant must be 60 years or above. Age is taken from Aadhaar, voter ID, a school certificate, or a medical age certificate issued by a government medical officer where no documentary proof exists.
What disability percentage is needed for Divyangjan pension?
At least 40 per cent disability, certified by a competent government medical board. A certificate from a private doctor or hospital is not accepted.
Can a widow who remarries continue to draw the pension?
No. Remarriage ends eligibility for the widow pension, and the pension is stopped from the quarter in which remarriage is reported. Continuing to draw it after remarriage leads to recovery of the amount paid.
Can I draw two SSPY pensions at the same time?
No. A person cannot draw more than one pension from this programme, and a person already drawing a government service pension or a pension from another government source is not eligible.
How do I check my pension status?
Open sspy-up.gov.in, choose your pension type, and use the beneficiary login or the pensioner list option with your registration number, application number or mobile number. The portal also publishes district-wise and block-wise pensioner lists.
Why has my pension stopped?
The most common causes are a bank account that is not Aadhaar-seeded, a name mismatch between Aadhaar and the bank record, a closed or dormant account, and failure to complete the annual verification. Correct the bank or Aadhaar detail and the arrears are usually released in the next quarter.
Is there any fee to apply?
No. Applying on sspy-up.gov.in is free. No official, pradhan, lekhpal or agent may charge for adding a name to the pension list, and any such demand can be reported on jansunwai.up.nic.in.
