What is the Student Program Under AcSIR?

Student Program Under AcSIR is the doctoral enrolment route of the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), a degree-awarding academy of the Government of India. The programme admits postgraduate candidates into PhD programmes and gives them fellowships, training and research opportunities in Earth Sciences, with the stated aim of preparing future leaders in the geoscience domain of the Himalayas.

The Uttarakhand connection is the host institute. AcSIR does not run laboratories of its own; it awards degrees for research done at associated national institutes. In Uttarakhand that institute is the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology that has existed since 1968 and maintains its own AcSIR faculty list and AcSIR student list.

This is therefore a research-career scheme, not a welfare scheme. There is no cash grant paid to a household, no income test and no domicile test. What the candidate gets is admission to a PhD, a supervisor, laboratory access and the research environment of a national Himalayan geology institute.

What does the programme provide?

According to the scheme description, the benefits are:

  • Advanced research opportunities, the chance to conduct high-quality, interdisciplinary research across fields of Himalayan geoscience.
  • Leadership development. The programme is framed around developing leaders in Himalayan Earth Science through the PhD route.
  • Career advancement, successful completion leads to a doctoral degree, which is the entry qualification for research and faculty positions in the field.

Financial support comes from the national fellowship the candidate already holds; NET-JRF, INSPIRE or an equivalent: rather than from a separate scheme stipend. That is why holding such a fellowship is an eligibility condition rather than an outcome of selection. Candidates applying through the integrated PhD route as fresh candidates are noted as being eligible for the AcSIR-NIF Innovation Doctoral Fellowship, and existing AcSIR PhD students may receive lump-sum research support through AcSIR faculty.

Who is eligible for the Student Program Under AcSIR?

You are eligible if:

  • You hold a postgraduate degree: M.Sc. or M.Tech. — in any discipline of Earth Sciences.
  • You hold a valid national-level fellowship, specifically one of:
  • NET-JRF (UGC or CSIR)
  • INSPIRE Fellowship
  • any other equivalent national fellowship

You are not eligible if:

  • You hold only a bachelor's degree. The programme is a postgraduate-entry doctoral route.
  • Your postgraduate degree is in a field outside Earth Sciences and allied disciplines.
  • You do not hold a national fellowship, or your fellowship has lapsed by the date of application. This is the condition that disqualifies the largest number of otherwise strong applicants.
  • You are looking for a scholarship paid as cash to a student in school or college. This scheme has no such component and should not be confused with the state's student scholarship schemes.

What documents are required?

Document Mandatory Notes
Postgraduate degree certificate and marksheets Yes M.Sc. or M.Tech. in Earth Sciences
Valid national fellowship award letter Yes NET-JRF, INSPIRE or equivalent, valid on the application date
Identity proof Yes Government photo ID, in the portal's specified format and size
Research proposal No Required on the existing-student, employee and industry-sponsored routes
AcSIR enrolment letter No Only for candidates already registered for a PhD at AcSIR
Employer No Objection Certificate No Only for industry-sponsored candidates

The portal specifies the exact file format and size for each upload, and rejects files that do not comply, so prepare scans before starting the form.

How to apply for the Student Program Under AcSIR

  1. Visit the official online application portal at acsiriphd.emli.in and create a username and application login by clicking "Sign Up here".

  3. Fill the application form as instructed on the portal and upload the mandatory and applicable documents in the specified format and size.
  4. Choose the relevant admission route:
  • Fresh candidate, not already registered for a PhD at AcSIR, choose a research area and a lab preference; this route is eligible for the AcSIR-NIF Innovation Doctoral Fellowship.
  • AcSIR PhD student; submit your enrolment letter and thesis research proposal; eligible for lump-sum research support through AcSIR faculty.
  • Employee route: submit permission from the Director of the organisation and your proposed research problem; no additional financial support is provided.
  • Industry-sponsored candidate, submit a No Objection Certificate from your employer and your proposed research problem.

There is no application fee at any stage of this process.

How do I approach the Wadia Institute in Dehradun?

A candidate who wants to do Himalayan geoscience research in Uttarakhand should do two things in parallel. First, apply on the AcSIR portal as above. Second, look at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology's own website, wihg.res.in, which publishes its AcSIR faculty list and AcSIR student list under its student programmes section, so you can identify a potential supervisor and a research area before choosing a lab preference on the form.

WIHG also runs a separate self-sponsored dissertation and internship programme and a skill development training programme for postgraduate students. Those are different schemes with different entry conditions, and neither of them awards a PhD. Do not substitute one for the other on the application.

Why AcSIR applications fail

  • Fellowship not valid on the date of application, or no national fellowship at all.
  • Postgraduate degree outside the accepted disciplines.
  • Wrong admission route chosen, so the supporting documents demanded by the portal do not match the ones uploaded.
  • Documents uploaded in the wrong format or above the size limit set by the portal.
  • Missing research proposal on the routes that require one.
  • Missing NOC or Director's permission on the industry-sponsored or employee routes.
  • Application submitted after the cycle closed; AcSIR admits in announced sessions and the portal opens for each cycle rather than remaining open indefinitely.

What this guide could not verify

Two details are deliberately left open. Fellowship amounts are not stated here, because the money comes from the candidate's own UGC, CSIR or INSPIRE fellowship at whatever rate that scheme currently pays, not from a fixed figure published under this scheme. Session dates are not stated, because AcSIR runs announced admission cycles rather than a single annual deadline; check the portal for the cycle that is currently open before preparing documents.
