Marriage Registration Certificate in West Bengal
West Bengal state government scheme
Marriage Registration Certificate in West Bengal is issued through the MARREG online portal at rgmwb.gov.in, run by the Registrar General of Marriages under the Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue. Couples apply online under one of five marriage laws, wait out a 7-day or 30-day objection period, appear before the Marriage Officer, and download the certificate from the same portal.
Marriage Registration Certificate in West Bengal is issued through MARREG, the fully web-based marriage registration system at rgmwb.gov.in, run by the Registrar General of Marriages under the Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue. West Bengal took an unusual route among Indian states: instead of bolting marriage registration onto a revenue e-district system, the state built a dedicated portal in which the Marriage Officer himself works online. As the portal itself puts it, registration is "totally web accessed", so a Marriage Officer can process a file from any location with an internet connection.
Which law will your marriage be registered under in West Bengal?
This is the first question the MARREG portal asks, and it decides every timeline that follows. Five laws are supported.
The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 covers marriages between Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs. The application is submitted to the Marriage Officer after the social marriage has taken place. The objection period is 7 days from the date the application is received, and the marriage should be registered within 6 calendar months from that date.
The Special Marriage Act, 1954 to Section 13 is the civil route for a marriage not yet solemnised, including inter-faith marriages and marriages where one party is a foreign national. The declaration and solemnisation begin only after 30 days from the date the notice is received and must be completed within 3 months.
The Special Marriage Act, 1954 to Section 16 registers a marriage that has already been solemnised. The application can be submitted at least 30 days after the marriage, the objection period is 30 days from receipt of the application, and the registration window is 6 months.
The Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872 applies where the parties are Christian. The MARREG portal notes that both parties should be over 21 years, and that a consent letter is required where the bride is between 18 and 21 years.
The Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act, 1936 applies to Parsi marriages, which are solemnised by a priest in the Ashirvad ceremony in the presence of two Parsi witnesses.
Who can and cannot apply in West Bengal?
You can apply where the marriage was solemnised in West Bengal, or where either party resides in the state and can produce address proof falling inside a Marriage Officer's jurisdiction. Both parties must have been of legal marrying age on the wedding date to 21 years for the man and 18 years for the woman, and both must be capable of giving valid consent.
You cannot apply where either party has a living spouse from an earlier marriage that was neither dissolved by a decree of divorce nor ended by death. You are not eligible where the parties fall within the degrees of prohibited relationship or are sapindas of each other under the Hindu Marriage Act, unless a custom governing both parties permits the marriage. An application filed under the Christian Marriage Act for a bride aged 18 to 21 without the required consent letter will not go through, and an application under the wrong Act will be returned rather than corrected by the officer.
Which documents does the West Bengal Marriage Officer need?
Carry, in original: date-of-birth proof for both parties (Madhyamik admit card or certificate, birth certificate or passport); address proof for both parties, since this fixes jurisdiction; photo identity proof for both; passport-size photographs; and identity and address proof of the witnesses, who must be physically present.
Where the marriage has already been solemnised, add evidence that it happened, the invitation card, ceremony photographs, or a certificate from the temple, church or gurudwara. Where either party was married before, add the divorce decree or the former spouse's death certificate. Where one party is a foreign national, add the passport, valid visa and a no-impediment certificate from that person's embassy or consulate.
What does marriage registration cost in West Bengal?
West Bengal charges a statutory fee, and the MARREG portal publishes the current amounts in the Fees Structure section under its Public Info menu. The payable amount is also shown on the portal's payment screen before you confirm the transaction, and payment is made online through the portal itself.
Pay only that government fee, on the official portal, and keep the payment receipt with the application number. Agents outside registry offices in Kolkata, Howrah, Barasat, Siliguri and Asansol sell "marriage registration packages" for thousands of rupees. Nothing in such a package is a service West Bengal charges for, and no agent can shorten the 7-day Hindu Marriage Act objection period or the 30-day Special Marriage Act notice period: both are fixed by statute.
How to apply for a marriage certificate in West Bengal online
- Open rgmwb.gov.in and go to the MARREG portal, then read the note for the Act you intend to register under so you know your objection period and deadline.
- Use the portal's Search Marriage Officers facility to identify the officer with jurisdiction over the place of solemnisation or over a party's residence.
- Choose Apply Online, select your Act — Hindu Marriage Act 1955, Special Marriage Act Section 13 or Section 16, Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872, or Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act 1936, and register with your mobile number.
- Fill in both parties' names, dates of birth, religion, occupation, marital status and addresses, the date and place of the marriage or intended marriage, and the witness details.
- Upload the scanned documents and pay the fee shown, then save the acknowledgement carrying your application number.
- Wait out the objection period to 7 days under the Hindu Marriage Act, 30 days under the Special Marriage Act, during which anyone may file an objection through the portal.
- Attend the appointment fixed by the Marriage Officer with your spouse, the witnesses and all originals. The officer verifies identity, the parties sign the declaration, and the register entry is made.
- Download the certificate from the MARREG portal once the entry is registered, or collect the signed copy from the officer's chamber.
How do you apply offline in West Bengal?
- Locate the Marriage Officer for your area; most are advocates or officials notified as Marriage Officers, and their office details are on the MARREG portal.
- Meet the officer with your documents and have the online application filed in your name; West Bengal routes every registration through MARREG, so even a walk-in file becomes an online record.
- Sign the printed application and the notice, and collect the acknowledgement with the application number.
- Return on the date fixed after the objection period with your spouse and witnesses, carrying originals, and sign the marriage register.
How do you check the status of your application?
Use the status-tracking option on the MARREG portal with the application number printed on your acknowledgement. The portal shows the stage the file has reached, application received, objection period running, appearance pending, or registered. The same portal is where an objection to a marriage is filed, so if a file has stalled beyond the published objection period, check whether an objection was recorded against it.
Does the certificate expire, and how do you get a duplicate?
A West Bengal marriage certificate does not expire and is never renewed. Where the certificate is lost or damaged, apply through the MARREG portal for a certified copy of the register entry. The portal offers certified copies and marriage record searches as separate services. A certified copy is what a passport office, consulate or bank should be given when it asks for an original rather than a photocopy. Where a name or date has been recorded wrongly, take the proof of the correct particular to the same Marriage Officer and ask for rectification of the entry.
Why do West Bengal marriage registrations fail?
The commonest causes are the wrong Act being selected at the start, which forces a fresh application; a date of birth on the application that does not match the Madhyamik certificate; address proof that falls outside the chosen Marriage Officer's jurisdiction; witnesses who do not attend or who arrive without originals; a bride aged between 18 and 21 in a Christian Marriage Act file with no consent letter; and a second marriage filed without the divorce decree or death certificate. Files also lapse where the couple misses the 6-month registration window after the application was received.
Where do you complain if registration is delayed?
Raise the matter first with the Marriage Officer, quoting your application number and the date the application was received. If it is not resolved, escalate to the Registrar General of Marriages, West Bengal, who exercises superintendence over Marriage Officers, through the Contact Us page on the MARREG portal, and to the Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue at wbregistration.gov.in. A written complaint naming the Act, the application number, the officer and the date of application works far better than repeated visits.

Frequently asked questions
Which portal handles marriage registration in West Bengal?
The MARREG portal at rgmwb.gov.in, run by the Registrar General of Marriages under the Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue, is the official channel for marriage registration in West Bengal. The portal takes the online application, lets you search for Marriage Officers, tracks status, accepts payment, allows objections to be filed and issues certified copies.
Which laws can a West Bengal marriage be registered under?
The MARREG portal supports five laws — the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, the Special Marriage Act 1954 (Section 13 for a marriage to be solemnised and Section 16 for one already solemnised), the Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872 and the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act 1936. You choose the Act at the start of the application, and the timeline that follows depends on that choice.
How long does registration take under the Hindu Marriage Act in West Bengal?
Under the Hindu Marriage Act route the portal states that the application is submitted after the social marriage, the objection period is 7 days from the date the application is received, and the marriage should be registered within 6 calendar months from the date the application was received. The objection period cannot be shortened by anyone.
What is the timeline under the Special Marriage Act in West Bengal?
Under Section 13 of the Special Marriage Act the declaration and solemnisation start after 30 days from the date the notice is received and must be completed within 3 months, while under Section 16 the application is submitted at least 30 days after the marriage and carries a 30-day objection period with a 6-month registration window.
What does marriage registration cost in West Bengal?
The government fee is the amount published in the Fees Structure section under Public Info on the MARREG portal and shown on the payment screen before you confirm — pay only that. West Bengal does not require you to hire anyone, and touts outside registry offices in Kolkata, Howrah, Siliguri and Asansol charge many times the state fee for the same online form.
Do both parties and the witnesses have to appear in person?
Yes, both parties and the witnesses must appear before the Marriage Officer to sign the marriage register. West Bengal does not register a marriage on uploaded documents alone, and a power of attorney holder cannot sign for a spouse.
Does a West Bengal marriage certificate expire?
No, a marriage certificate never expires and is never renewed. If you lose it, apply on the MARREG portal for a certified copy of the register entry, which carries the same evidentiary value as the original.
Can we choose any Marriage Officer in West Bengal?
No — you must use the Marriage Officer with jurisdiction over the place where the marriage was or will be solemnised, or where a party resides, and the MARREG portal has a search facility to identify that officer. Under the Special Marriage Act the notice goes to the officer of a district where one party has resided for at least 30 days immediately before the notice.
