What is Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana in Maharashtra?

Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana is a social security insurance scheme that the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department, Government of Maharashtra implements in the state as a centrally sponsored scheme. The scheme was launched nationally in 2007 for unorganised sector households, with the Life Insurance Corporation of India acting as the nodal insurer, and Maharashtra applied it to a specific group: landless labourers living in rural areas.

According to the Maharashtra district administration pages that publish the scheme, Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana covers a member aged 18 to 59 and pays Rs 30,000 on natural death, Rs 75,000 on accidental death and Rs 75,000 on permanent total disability caused by an accident. On top of the insurance, the scheme carries an education component. A Rs 100 monthly scholarship for up to two children of a covered member studying in classes 9 to 12.

The premium is Rs 200 per member per year, and district pages record that 50 per cent of it is subsidised by the state and central governments. This design. A very small premium, a modest sum assured, and a scholarship attached; was typical of the pre-2015 generation of Indian social insurance schemes.

Is Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana still running?

This question needs a straight answer, because the published record is not uniform.

At the national level, Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana was merged with Janashree Bima Yojana in 2013, and the government then folded this class of cover into Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) from 1 June 2017. Since then AABY has not been open to fresh enrolment nationally.

At the state level, several Maharashtra district portals: Nashik and Beed among them: continue to carry Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana as a listed scheme of the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department, with pages updated as recently as July 2026. Existing members and pending claims are handled through those offices.

The practical reading for a reader in rural Maharashtra: do not plan on enrolling fresh in AABY. Ask your Tahsildar whether enrolment is open in your district, and in parallel enrol in PMJJBY and PMSBY at your bank, which together give Rs 2,00,000 life cover and Rs 2,00,000 accident cover — far more than AABY's Rs 30,000 and Rs 75,000. If a family member was already covered under AABY and a death or disability has occurred, the claim route below still applies.

Who is eligible for Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana?

A person can be covered if:

  • They are a landless labourer in a rural area of Maharashtra, this is the defining condition of the state's version of the scheme.
  • They are aged 18 to 59 years. Cover ceases at 60.
  • They are normally the head of the family or the earning member of the household, which is how the parent scheme identifies the insured person.
  • The Rs 200 annual premium is paid, half of it subsidised by government.
  • A nominee has been recorded.

A person is not eligible if:

  • They are under 18 or 60 and above on the date of cover.
  • The household owns agricultural land. Land ownership takes the family out of the landless-labourer group the Maharashtra scheme is written for.
  • They live in an urban area outside the rural target group.
  • They are seeking fresh enrolment now, nationally the scheme has been closed to new members since 1 June 2017, and PMJJBY and PMSBY are the replacements.

How to apply for Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana

  1. Visit the Talathi of your village, the Tahsildar's office, or the Collector Office of your district and ask for the Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana application form. This is an offline scheme; there is no self-service online enrolment portal for it.
  2. Obtain the landless labourer certificate from the Talathi or Tahsildar. Without it the application will not move, because landlessness is the core eligibility test in Maharashtra's version of the scheme.
  3. Fill in the form with the member's name, date of birth, rural address and the details of the nominee, and complete the nomination section carefully.
  4. Attach age proof, ration card, Aadhaar of the member and the nominee, the landless labourer certificate and a copy of the bank passbook.
  5. Pay the annual premium share as directed by the office, and collect the receipt.
  6. Submit the file at the counter and collect a dated acknowledgement. Retain it. The nominee will need the member's enrolment reference at claim stage.

How to file a death, disability or scholarship claim

  1. Report the event to the Tahsildar or the Collector Office through which the member was enrolled, as early as possible.
  2. Attach the death certificate for a death claim. For an accidental death or disability claim, add the FIR, police panchnama and post-mortem report, and for permanent total disability add the disability certificate from the civil surgeon.
  3. Submit the nominee's Aadhaar and bank passbook, because the sum assured is credited to the nominee's account.
  4. For the scholarship, submit the child's school bonafide certificate for classes 9 to 12 along with the member's cover details, and repeat this each half year.

How to check the status of an application or claim

Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana does not have a public online status tracker in Maharashtra. Status is checked in person or by phone:

  • With the Talathi or Tahsildar who forwarded the application.
  • With the District Social Welfare Officer under the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department.
  • Through the LIC branch handling the group policy, where the enrolment was routed through LIC as nodal insurer.

Carry the acknowledgement receipt and the member's enrolment reference to any of these.

Why claims get rejected or delayed

  • No nomination on record, so the insurer has no one to pay. This is the single most frequent cause of delay.
  • Age outside 18 to 59 on the date of the event.
  • Premium not paid for the year in which the event occurred, so the cover was not in force.
  • Accident documents missing, an accidental death claim needs the FIR, panchnama and post-mortem report, not just the death certificate.
  • Landholding discovered in the household record, defeating the landless labourer condition.
  • Name mismatch between the ration card, Aadhaar and the enrolment record.

Help and grievance redressal

  • Social Justice and Special Assistance Department, Maharashtra: sjsa.maharashtra.gov.in
  • District route: the District Social Welfare Officer, the Tahsildar or the Collector Office where the enrolment was made
  • LIC national customer helpline: 1800-22-9966, for group insurance and claim queries where the policy was serviced by LIC
  • Replacement cover: enrol in PMJJBY and PMSBY at any bank branch where you hold a savings account

Enrolment and claim filing under a government insurance scheme carry no agent fee beyond the notified premium. No officer will ask for an OTP to release a claim.
