What is the Eco-certification of Coffee support scheme?

"Development Support for Coffee in Traditional Areas: Eco-certification of Coffee" is a subsidy scheme run by the Coffee Board, a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. According to the scheme details on the myScheme portal, it reimburses part of the cost of obtaining eco-certification for coffee grown in India's traditional coffee-growing regions, so that growers can access premium specialty and export markets that pay more for sustainably produced coffee.

Most of India's coffee is shade-grown under natural forest canopy, which makes it well suited to sustainability standards. But third-party certification: by bodies that audit farms against environmental and social criteria: costs money, and that cost is often out of reach for small growers. This scheme steps in to share that cost, encouraging more growers to earn recognised certifications and command better prices.

How much support does the scheme provide?

According to the scheme details on myScheme, the reimbursement is:

• 50% of the certification cost, subject to a ceiling of Rs 50,000 per individual grower or group.
• For SC/ST growers with holdings up to 4 hectares, an additional 10% is provided, taking the ceiling to Rs 55,000.

The duration of support depends on the type of certification:

• Organic certification support is spread over three years or the conversion period, reflecting the multi-year process of converting a farm to certified organic status.
• Other certifications are generally supported for one year.

Which certifications qualify?

The scheme supports certification from recognised sustainability programmes, including:

• Fair Trade
• Rainforest Alliance
• UTZ Certified
• Bird-Friendly / Shade-Grown standards

These certifications verify that coffee is grown with sound environmental and social practices, preserving shade trees and biodiversity, managing water and soil responsibly, and ensuring fair treatment of workers, which is what specialty buyers overseas are willing to pay a premium for.

Who is eligible for eco-certification support?

You can apply if you are:

• An individual coffee grower with a holding of up to 10 hectares in a traditional coffee-growing area.
• A small-grower collective or self-help group (SHG) of coffee growers.
• A grower obtaining certification from a recognised programme listed above.

Enhanced support (an extra 10%, ceiling Rs 55,000) is available to SC/ST growers with holdings up to 4 hectares.

You cannot claim under this component if:

• Your holding is larger than 10 hectares — large estates are outside this small-grower-focused component.
• You have not obtained certification from a recognised, accredited agency.
• You are seeking a cash award unconnected to certification. The scheme only reimburses the documented cost of eco-certification actually completed.

What documents are required?

How to apply for the coffee eco-certification subsidy

The support is a reimbursement, so certification comes first and the claim follows:

1. Obtain eco-certification for your coffee from an accredited agency under a recognised programme (Organic, Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, UTZ, Bird-Friendly / Shade-Grown).
2. Fill in the Coffee Board's prescribed application for eco-certification support.
3. Attach the supporting documents, the certificate, the original invoice and payment proof, land and identity documents, group registration if applicable, an SC/ST certificate if claiming enhanced support, and bank details.
4. Submit the application to the Coffee Board, ideally within the same financial year in which the certification was completed.
5. Undergo document review and field verification by Coffee Board officers, after which the reimbursement is released to your bank account.

Why the scheme matters

Certification is one of the surest ways for a small coffee grower to move up the value chain. A Rainforest Alliance or organic seal opens doors to specialty roasters and export buyers who pay a premium, and it rewards the shade-grown, biodiversity-friendly farming that is already common in India's coffee tracts of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, as well as the North-Eastern and non-traditional areas. By covering half the certification cost; more for SC/ST growers. The Coffee Board lowers the single biggest barrier that keeps small growers out of these markets.
