Cattle Shed Subsidy Scheme under Scheduled Castes Sub Plan (SC Category)
Gujarat state government scheme
Cattle Shed Subsidy Scheme under the Scheduled Castes Sub Plan gives Scheduled Caste cattle keepers in Gujarat up to Rs 30,000 or 50 per cent of the cost of building a two-animal cattle shed, whichever is lower. Applicants must keep at least 2 animals and hold land, and apply online on the iKhedut portal during an open window.
What is the Cattle Shed Subsidy Scheme under the Scheduled Castes Sub Plan?
Cattle Shed Subsidy Scheme under the Scheduled Castes Sub Plan is run by the Directorate of Animal Husbandry, part of the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Co-operation Department, Government of Gujarat. The scheme funds the construction of a pucca cattle shed. A roofed, floored shelter for milch animals, for cattle keepers belonging to the Scheduled Castes.
Cattle Shed Subsidy Scheme pays up to Rs 30,000, or 50 per cent of the cost of the shed, whichever is lower, for a shelter built to house two animals. The grant is credited by direct benefit transfer after the shed has been built and verified on site. Applications are accepted only through the iKhedut portal, Gujarat's single window for agriculture and animal husbandry subsidies.
The Scheduled Castes Sub Plan is a budgeting mechanism, not a separate department. Gujarat, like every state, is required to earmark a share of its plan outlay for Scheduled Caste beneficiaries in proportion to their population, and components like this one are how that earmarked money reaches households. The practical consequence for an applicant is that the caste certificate is not a supporting document but the gateway document, without it the application cannot be filed under this component at all.
Why a cattle shed matters economically
An animal tied under a tree or in an open yard loses condition in Gujarat's summer heat and in monsoon damp, and milk yield falls with it. A shed with a roof, a sloped floor that drains, and a manger reduces heat stress, keeps fodder out of mud, and makes dung collection possible instead of losing it to the yard. The department funds sheds for the same reason it funds chaff cutters: it is buying productivity per animal from households that cannot finance the capital work themselves.
Key features
- Capital subsidy for one cattle shed per eligible beneficiary.
- Ceiling of Rs 30,000 or 50 per cent of cost, whichever is less.
- Sized for two animals, which is the unit the assistance is calculated on.
- Paid after construction and physical verification, by DBT.
- Reserved for Scheduled Caste beneficiaries under the Scheduled Castes Sub Plan.
- Applied for on ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in during announced windows only.
Who is eligible for the cattle shed subsidy?
An applicant qualifies if all of the following are true:
- The applicant belongs to the Scheduled Caste category and holds a caste certificate from a competent authority in Gujarat.
- The applicant keeps at least 2 animals.
- The applicant holds the land on which the shed will stand: either owned land recorded in their own name, or land taken on rent or lease. Leases of up to ten years and of more than ten years are both recognised.
- The applicant is a permanent resident of Gujarat.
- The applicant has an Aadhaar-seeded bank account for the DBT credit.
Who cannot apply
- General category, OBC and Scheduled Tribe applicants are not eligible under this component, because the funding line is the Scheduled Castes Sub Plan. Scheduled Tribe cattle keepers should look for the equivalent Tribal Area Sub Plan component, and General category applicants for the general cattle shed component, both listed separately on iKhedut.
- A cattle keeper with fewer than 2 animals cannot apply.
- An applicant with no land right at all — neither ownership nor a documented lease: cannot apply, because the department will not fund a permanent structure on land the beneficiary has no claim to.
- Residents of other states cannot apply.
- An applicant who has already received cattle shed assistance cannot claim a second shed under the same component.
- Anyone applying outside an open application window will not find the component available on the portal.
The land condition is where most otherwise eligible households come unstuck. Landless Scheduled Caste cattle keepers are common in Gujarat, and a household keeping two buffaloes on the edge of a village without any recorded land right cannot use this component. The realistic route in that situation is to obtain a written, dated rent agreement for the plot from the landowner before applying, rather than to file and hope the land question is not asked.

How to apply for the cattle shed subsidy
- Obtain or renew the Scheduled Caste certificate and collect the 7/12 and 8-A land extracts, or a written lease agreement for the site.
- Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in, go to Schemes, then Animal Husbandry Schemes, and check whether the cattle shed component under the Scheduled Castes Sub Plan is showing as open.
- Choose Apply, register as a new applicant with Aadhaar and mobile number if you have not applied before, and log in.
- Complete the application form with your personal details, caste certificate number, village and taluka, land survey number, number of animals, bank account number and IFSC, and the construction estimate amount.
- Submit the application and note the application number shown on screen.
- Confirm the application using the separate confirmation option. An application that is submitted but never confirmed does not enter the queue. This is the single most common reason a genuine applicant hears nothing back.
- Print the confirmed application, sign it, attach self-attested copies of every document, and deliver the set to the taluka or district animal husbandry office within the days stated on the printout. Take a stamped receipt.
- Wait for the sanction letter before starting construction, then build the shed and keep every bill and voucher.
- Report completion to the animal husbandry office so an officer can carry out the physical verification that releases the payment.
How is the subsidy paid?
The payment is a reimbursement against verified construction. The order of events is application, confirmation, physical submission, sanction, construction, site verification, and finally credit of up to Rs 30,000 to the Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
The 50 per cent rate means a shed costing Rs 60,000 or more attracts the full Rs 30,000, while a shed costing Rs 40,000 attracts Rs 20,000. Building a larger or more expensive shed does not raise the ceiling above Rs 30,000, so a beneficiary planning a bigger structure should treat the grant as a fixed contribution and budget the balance themselves.
Starting construction before the sanction letter arrives is the mistake that most often costs a household the grant. An officer cannot verify that a shed already standing was built under the scheme, and pre-sanction construction is routinely disallowed.
How do I check my application status?
- Open ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in and select the application status option.
- Enter the application number with the registered mobile number or Aadhaar number.
- Read the current stage, submitted, confirmed, pending at taluka, sanctioned, verified, or rejected with a reason.
A status stuck at "submitted" means the confirmation step was never completed. A status stuck at "pending at taluka" usually means the signed physical printout has not reached the office, or reached it without the caste certificate attached.
Why do cattle shed applications get rejected?
- Application submitted but not confirmed on the portal.
- Caste certificate missing, expired, or issued outside Gujarat.
- No documented land right for the site of the shed.
- Fewer than 2 animals shown in the ownership proof.
- Physical file not delivered to the taluka office within the allowed days.
- Construction started before sanction, so the work cannot be attributed to the scheme.
- Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, so the DBT credit fails even after sanction.
- Component budget exhausted for the financial year, which produces a rejection unrelated to the applicant's eligibility. The remedy is to reapply in the next announced window.
Where do I raise a grievance?
- Taluka animal husbandry office or the district panchayat animal husbandry branch holds the physical file and is the first place to ask.
- Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry at the district level handles escalation against the taluka office.
- Directorate of Animal Husbandry, Gujarat, at doah.gujarat.gov.in, is the state authority for the scheme.
- iKhedut helpdesk handles portal faults such as an application that will not confirm or an OTP that never arrives.
Applying is free. No fee is payable to any officer or agent for filing, sanctioning or verifying a cattle shed application, and no intermediary can guarantee approval when a component's budget is exhausted.

Frequently asked questions
How much subsidy does the SC cattle shed scheme give?
The scheme gives up to Rs 30,000 or 50 per cent of the cost of the cattle shed, whichever is lower, for a shelter built for two animals. The amount is credited to the beneficiary's bank account after the shed is built and physically verified.
Who can apply for the cattle shed subsidy in Gujarat?
A Scheduled Caste cattle keeper who is a permanent resident of Gujarat, keeps at least 2 animals, and holds the land for the shed either in their own name or on a lease can apply. The caste certificate and the land record are the two documents the case turns on.
Can I apply if the land is rented rather than owned?
Yes. Land held on rent or lease is accepted, provided the arrangement is documented. Leases for up to ten years and for more than ten years are both recognised, so a registered lease deed or rent agreement should be attached in place of a 7/12 extract.
Do I get the money before building the shed?
No. The subsidy is a reimbursement paid after construction is complete and an officer has physically verified the shed. Applicants must fund the construction themselves and claim afterwards against bills.
Is this scheme open to General or OBC applicants?
No. This component is funded from the Scheduled Castes Sub Plan and only Scheduled Caste applicants are eligible. General, OBC and Scheduled Tribe cattle keepers must look at the corresponding general or Tribal Area Sub Plan components on the iKhedut portal.
How many animals do I need for the cattle shed subsidy?
A minimum of 2 animals is required, and the assistance is calculated for a shed sized for two animals. Keeping more animals does not increase the Rs 30,000 ceiling under this component.
Where do I apply for the cattle shed subsidy?
Apply online at ikhedut.gujarat.gov.in during an announced application window, then submit the signed printout with documents to your taluka or district animal husbandry office. There is no paper-first application route.
