What is the District Level Sports School scheme?

District Level Sports School (DLSS) is a scheme of the Sports Authority of Gujarat, which works under the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department of the Government of Gujarat. According to the Sports Authority of Gujarat portal, DLSS has run since 2013-14 on a public-private partnership model: the state funds and supervises the sporting side, while a partner school supplies classrooms, hostel and mess facilities.

The problem DLSS was created to solve is a familiar one in Gujarat's districts. A child shows real promise at a village or taluka meet, but serious training means travelling to a city, and the family has to choose between schooling and sport. DLSS removes that choice. A selected student stays in a residential school, attends regular classes during the day, and trains under professional coaches in morning and evening sessions on the same campus.

The Sports Authority of Gujarat states that the scheme spends about Rs 1.68 lakh per athlete per year. That is not a cash transfer. It is the cost of the package the state buys on the student's behalf; schooling, boarding, food, kit and coaching.

DLSS has grown steadily. The Sports Authority of Gujarat reports 8 schools in 2014-15 rising to 41 schools in 2024-25, with more than 5,300 beneficiaries covered across those years.

Who is eligible for a District Level Sports School seat?

DLSS admits students in two talent categories defined by the Sports Authority of Gujarat:

• Young Talent (YT), emerging athletes identified through Khel Mahakumbh, Gujarat's mass-participation sports festival. These are children who have shown raw ability and physical aptitude but do not yet have a competition record.
• Proven Talent (PT): athletes who already carry a demonstrated achievement record at state or higher level in a DLSS discipline.

You can be considered if:

• You are a school student resident in Gujarat in the age and class band announced for the trial.
• You compete in one of the 21 listed disciplines, the Olympic sports archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, fencing, football, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling, or the non-Olympic sports chess, kabaddi and kho kho.
• You clear the district trial or are shortlisted on Khel Mahakumbh performance.
• You are medically fit for residential training.

You are not eligible if:

• You are not a resident of Gujarat. DLSS is a state-funded scheme and students from other states cannot apply.
• Your sport is not on the DLSS list for the school you are applying to. Not every one of the 41 schools runs every discipline; a school may offer only four or five.
• You are outside the age or class band announced for that year's trial in your discipline. Age bands differ between sports, because a gymnastics intake starts far younger than a weightlifting intake.
• You cannot commit to residential training. DLSS is a boarding programme, and a day-scholar arrangement is not the model the scheme funds.
• You fail the medical fitness check.

Being rejected in one year is not permanent. Trials run each academic year, and a student who has grown or improved can be trialled again.

What does a DLSS student actually receive?

How to apply for the District Level Sports School

DLSS admission is a selection process, not an open application scheme. There is no year-round form that guarantees consideration. Follow these steps:

1. Register the player on the Sports Authority of Gujarat portal. Open sportsauthority.gujarat.gov.in and use the Player Registration option. This creates the student's record in the state sports database and is the base requirement for every SAG scheme, including DLSS.
2. Compete in Khel Mahakumbh. Khel Mahakumbh is the main talent-spotting funnel for the Young Talent category. Enter through your school or your taluka centre and compete in your discipline. Keep every participation and result certificate.
3. Watch for the district trial notice. The District Sports Officer publishes trial dates for DLSS intake before the academic year begins. Notices go to schools, district sports complexes and the SAG portal. Confirm the date, venue, age band and disciplines for your district.
4. Attend the trial with your documents. Carry date-of-birth proof, school bonafide certificate, Gujarat residence proof, medical fitness certificate, photographs, Aadhaar and any competition certificates. Proven Talent candidates should bring originals of their achievement certificates.
5. Complete admission formalities at the allotted school. If selected, the student is allotted to a specific DLSS partner school. Submit the school leaving certificate, complete the hostel joining formalities and the medical check, and report on the date given.
6. Retain the place through the annual review. Continuation depends on both training attendance and academic progress. Students who stop training or drop out of classes lose the seat to the next candidate on the district list.

How to check the status of a DLSS application

DLSS does not have a public online status tracker of the kind central DBT schemes carry. Use these routes instead:

1. District Sports Officer, the trial list, the selected list and the school allotment are all held at district level. This is the fastest and most reliable source.
2. The partner school — once allotment is announced, the school's admission office holds the joining list.
3. Sports Authority of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, call 079-23263650 if the district office cannot resolve the query.

Why DLSS applications get rejected

• The trial was missed. This is the single most common reason. DLSS intake runs on a fixed district calendar, and a late applicant is simply not assessed.
• Age proof does not match the declared age band. A mismatch between the birth certificate and the school record stalls the file. Fix the school record before the trial, not after.
• The discipline is not offered at the district's partner school that year.
• Medical fitness not cleared, or the certificate is from an unrecognised practitioner.
• Residence proof missing, so Gujarat domicile cannot be confirmed.
• Proven Talent claimed without certificates. A verbal claim of a state medal is not accepted; the certificate must be produced.

DLSS runs on the academic year, so trials and allotment cluster before the school session starts.
