What is Mai Ramabai Ambedakar Saat Phera Samuh Lagna Yojana?

Mai Ramabai Ambedakar Saat Phera Samuh Lagna Yojana is a Gujarat state scheme run by the Director of Scheduled Caste Welfare under the Social Justice and Empowerment Department. Launched in 1998, the scheme pays a cash incentive to Scheduled Caste couples who marry at an organised group marriage. A samuh lagna — instead of holding a separate private wedding, and it also pays a smaller amount to the institution that organises the event.

The scheme is named after Ramabai Ambedkar, wife of Dr B. R. Ambedkar, and is widely searched in Gujarat by its transliterated name, Saat Phera Samuh Lagna Yojana, after the seven rounds of the marriage ceremony.

The purpose is straightforward and social. Wedding expenditure is the single largest one-time cost most poor households face, and families routinely borrow at high interest to meet it. A group marriage spreads the cost of the pandal, catering, priest and arrangements across ten or more families at once. Mai Ramabai Ambedakar Saat Phera Samuh Lagna Yojana adds a direct cash incentive on top of that saving, so a family that chooses the group route ends the wedding with money in hand rather than a debt.

Who is eligible for Saat Phera Samuh Lagna Yojana?

You can apply if:

• The bride and groom are residents of Gujarat.
• The couple belongs to the Scheduled Caste category covered by the Director of Scheduled Caste Welfare, evidenced by a caste certificate from the competent authority.
• The bride is at least 18 years old and the groom at least 21 years old on the date of marriage, as required by law.
• The marriage took place at an organised group marriage with at least 10 couples, conducted by a registered institution, trust or society.
• The marriage is registered and a marriage registration certificate has been obtained.
• The application is filed within two years of the marriage date.
• The bride holds an active, Aadhaar-seeded bank account in her own name.

You cannot apply if:

• The couple married privately or at a family ceremony rather than at a qualifying group marriage. This is the most common disqualification.
• The event had fewer than 10 couples.
• Either partner was below the legal age of marriage on the wedding date.
• The couple is not resident in Gujarat, or the caste certificate is issued by another state.
• The marriage is not registered, so no marriage registration certificate can be produced.
• More than two years have passed since the date of marriage.
• This is a second claim for the same couple; the incentive is payable once.

Where an income limit is applied for the year in question, an income certificate of the father or guardian is asked for at the time of filing. Check the current requirement shown on the e-Samaj Kalyan application form before you upload, since income conditions for Scheduled Caste welfare schemes in Gujarat have been revised from time to time.

How much benefit does the scheme give?

The couple's Rs 12,000 is a one-time payment. It is not an annual benefit and it is not repeated for a subsequent marriage. Payment is released only after the District Social Welfare Officer has verified the documents, so the money usually arrives some weeks after the application is submitted, not on the wedding day.

Organiser assistance is paid to the registered institution that conducted the ceremony, against the list of participating couples, and is capped at Rs 75,000 for the event even where more than 25 couples participate.

How to apply for Saat Phera Samuh Lagna Yojana online

1. Get the marriage registered and collect the marriage registration certificate. Nothing else in the process can be completed without it.
2. Open a bank account in the bride's name if she does not already have one, and get it seeded with her Aadhaar number, since the incentive is paid by direct benefit transfer.
3. Register on the e-Samaj Kalyan portal at esamajkalyan.gujarat.gov.in as a new citizen user, using a working mobile number and email, and verify the OTP.
4. Log in and choose the Director of Scheduled Caste Welfare section, then select the Saat Phera Samuh Lagna Yojana application form.
5. Fill the form with the details of the bride and groom, the date of marriage, the name and registration details of the organising institution, and the bride's bank account number and IFSC code.
6. Upload scanned copies of the Aadhaar cards, caste certificate, marriage registration certificate, age proof, residence proof, the organiser's certificate and the bank passbook, keeping each file within the size limit shown on the portal.
7. Submit the application and download or print the acknowledgement carrying the application number.
8. Produce the original documents for verification at the District Social Welfare Officer's office if you are called, and track the application status by logging back into the portal.

How to apply offline or with help

1. Visit the District Social Welfare Officer of the Director of Scheduled Caste Welfare in your district with the full set of original documents and one photocopy of each.
2. Ask for assistance in filing the e-Samaj Kalyan application, since the scheme is processed through the portal even when the paperwork is submitted in person.
3. Alternatively use a Common Service Centre, where the operator will register you on the portal and upload the documents for a small notified service fee.
4. Collect the acknowledgement with the application number before you leave.

Many organising institutions file applications for all participating couples together. If your group marriage was conducted by a trust or samaj mandal, ask the organisers first, because a bulk filing saves each family the trouble.

How to check your application status

1. Log in to esamajkalyan.gujarat.gov.in with the user ID and password you created.
2. Open My Applications to see the current stage of your application.
3. Note the status shown: submitted, under verification at the district office, sanctioned, or payment released.
4. If the status stays unchanged for several weeks, visit the District Social Welfare Officer with the application number.

Why applications are rejected, and how to fix them

• Applied after two years from the date of marriage. This cannot be cured; file early.
• No marriage registration certificate, or a certificate whose spelling of the bride's or groom's name differs from Aadhaar. Get the record corrected before applying.
• Fewer than 10 couples at the ceremony, so the event does not qualify as a group marriage.
• Organiser certificate missing or issued by an unregistered body.
• Caste certificate from another state, or an outdated certificate.
• Bank account not in the bride's name or not Aadhaar-seeded, which causes the DBT to fail even after sanction.
• Blurred or oversized uploads, a routine reason for a file being sent back for resubmission.

Most rejections are documentary rather than substantive. Re-uploading a clean, matching set of documents through the portal usually resolves them.
