INSPIRE: Why Applications Get Rejected and How to Fix It

Most INSPIRE rejections come from a mismatch between the component you applied to and the eligibility it demands, an ineligible course for the SHE scholarship, an out-of-band age for a fellowship, or a missing institutional endorsement. This article maps each common reason to its fix. For eligibility, amounts and the application walkthrough, read the main INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) guide; here we focus only on what goes wrong and how to recover.

INSPIRE is not one scheme but an umbrella run by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), so a rejection reason that applies to the SHE scholarship may be irrelevant to the INSPIRE Fellowship or Faculty Fellowship. Always read your rejection against the component you actually applied under.

Ineligible course. The top SHE rejection

The single most common Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) rejection is a student with a qualifying board or entrance rank who is enrolled in a professional degree, B.Tech, MBBS, B.Pharm, BDS or an agriculture course: rather than a natural or basic science degree. SHE is restricted to B.Sc., B.S., Int. M.Sc. or M.S. in eligible subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Statistics, Geology and the atmospheric and oceanic sciences.

Fix: There is no fix through appeal. The course itself is outside scope. If you switch to an eligible basic-science programme within the age band (17-22), you can apply against a future SHE advertisement. Do not re-apply from the same professional course expecting a different result.

Merit cut-off not met

SHE requires you to be in the top 1% of your Class XII board examination, or to hold a rank within the top 10,000 in JEE or AIPMT. Applications from students who fall just outside these thresholds are rejected at scrutiny.

Fix: Confirm your board's official top-1% cut-off certificate before applying; if you qualified through the entrance route, upload the correct rank card. If you genuinely miss both thresholds, you are not eligible and should look at state merit scholarships instead.

Missing or unsigned institutional endorsement

INSPIRE SHE and fellowship applications must be endorsed by the Head of Institution on the prescribed proforma. An application without institutional endorsement is not processed — a very common, avoidable rejection.

Fix: Download the current endorsement proforma from online-inspire.gov.in, get it signed and stamped by the Head of Institution (not a departmental head unless authorised), and upload it before the window closes. Start this early, institutional signatures take time.

Age outside the component band

The age limits are firm and checked on the reference date: 17-22 for SHE, 22-27 for the INSPIRE Fellowship, and 27-32 for the INSPIRE Faculty Fellowship. Applying a year over the band gets an automatic rejection.

Fix: There is no age relaxation route published for these components. Apply to the component whose age band you fall in, or wait if you are below it.

Concurrent scholarship or fellowship

INSPIRE awards cannot be held concurrently with another central or state fellowship for the same period of study. Holding another government scholarship for the same course is a disqualifier.

Fix: Surrender or decline the other award and provide proof, or choose which award to keep. You cannot draw two government fellowships for the same tenure.

Document and profile errors

Rejections also arise from an admission proof that does not match the claimed course, a rank card that cannot be verified, or a bank account that does not match the applicant's name for disbursement.

Fix: Cross-check every uploaded document against your application form. Names, roll numbers and course titles must be consistent.

How to query or escalate a rejection

1. Log in to online-inspire.gov.in and open the application dashboard for your component to read the recorded status.
2. Write to the INSPIRE Programme Division at inspire.prog-dst@nic.in, prefixing the subject line with the component name: SHE, FELLOWSHIP, FACULTY or GENERAL, and quoting your application number.
3. Call the INSPIRE helpline on 0124-6690020 or 0124-6690021, 09:00 to 17:30, Monday to Friday, for a status or clarification query.

INSPIRE applications are free, and DST appoints no agents. No payment improves your chances, and no consultant can reverse a rejection that rests on ineligibility. Fix the underlying gap, course, merit, endorsement, age or concurrency, and re-apply against the next advertisement for your component.
