What is the LLB Internship Programme?

The LLB Internship Programme is a short training attachment offered by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, for law students and fresh law graduates. It is run by the Ministry's departments, principally the Department of Legal Affairs (DoLA) and the Department of Justice (DoJ), which each invite interns in monthly cycles.

According to the departments, the purpose of the programme is to acquaint young law students and graduates with the working of the Ministry — giving them exposure to research and referencing work, the functioning of courts, and the tendering of legal advice across specialised fields such as constitutional and administrative law, finance and economic law, infrastructure law, labour law, conveyancing, arbitration and contract law.

This is a learning and exposure programme, not a financial-benefit scheme. The only payment involved is a modest completion stipend to the selected interns.

Who is eligible for the LLB internship?

You can apply if you are:

• An Indian student who has passed the 2nd year of a three-year LLB course, or the 3rd year of a five-year LLB course; or
• A person who has completed a law degree from a recognised college, law school or university.

Advanced knowledge of computer applications (MS Office, infographics and similar tools) is generally treated as a preference, not a requirement.

You cannot apply / are not eligible if:

• You have not yet cleared the qualifying year of your law course (for example a first-year LLB student).
• You are not a law student or law graduate, the programme is only for those in or from the LLB stream.
• You have already completed the same internship in a previous year, in cycles where the notice bars repeat interns.

Selection is at the discretion of the Department, which considers academic record and the number of seats available in the month applied for.

How much does the internship pay?

Interns receive a stipend of Rs 5,000 on successful completion of the internship. This is an honorarium, not a salary. No travel allowance, dearness allowance, accommodation or any other payment is provided, and interns arrange their own stay and travel.

How to apply for the LLB internship

The internship is applied for online against the notice issued for each monthly cycle. The route is:

1. Watch for the internship notice on the website of the Department of Legal Affairs (legalaffairs.gov.in) or the Department of Justice (doj.gov.in), which announces the month, the number of seats and the last date.
2. Fill the online application in the specified format, stating the month for which you are applying and your area of interest.
3. Attach proof of your law course or degree, academic marksheets, identity proof and, if you are still a student, a bona-fide/no-objection certificate from your college.
4. Submit the application before the deadline and keep the acknowledgement.
5. If selected, complete the joining formalities and report on the first working day of the internship month; collect the stipend after successful completion.

Because seats are few and filled month by month, apply well ahead for a specific month and rely on the official department notice for the current window.
