What is the National Youth Award?

The National Youth Award is an annual recognition conferred by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, on young individuals and youth organisations for excellent work in national development and social service. According to the Ministry, the award is meant to motivate young people to work for community development and nation-building, and to acknowledge exceptional, identifiable contributions by youth.

The award is not a welfare payment or a scholarship. It is a merit recognition: awardees receive a medal, a certificate and a cash prize. For individuals the prize is Rs 1,00,000; for organisations it is Rs 3,00,000.

Who is eligible for the National Youth Award?

Individuals who can be nominated:

• Must be an Indian citizen.
• Must be between 15 and 29 years of age as on 1 January of the nominated year.
• Must have done extraordinary and identifiable social work or made a distinct contribution to national development or community service.

Organisations that can be nominated:

• Must be a registered body, generally registered for at least three years.
• Must have a proven track record of service in youth-related activities.

Who is not eligible: anyone below 15 or above 29 years on 1 January of the award year cannot be considered in the individual category, regardless of merit. Individuals seeking a personal grant, scholarship or salary cannot apply. This is a one-time honour, not recurring income. Organisations without valid registration or without a demonstrable youth-service record are not eligible. The award recognises past, verifiable work; a promise of future work does not qualify.

How much does the National Youth Award provide?

Up to 20 individual awards and up to 5 organisation awards are given each year, though the Ministry may vary the number in deserving cases at the discretion of the sanctioning authority.

How to apply for the National Youth Award

1. Watch for the annual notification issued by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports inviting nominations. The window typically closes around 30 September each year, confirm the exact dates in the current notice.
2. Prepare the nomination with the nominee's details, age proof, citizenship proof and a clear, evidenced account of the extraordinary work being recognised. Organisations should attach the registration certificate.
3. Submit the nomination through the channel specified in the notification — this may be online or routed through a recommending authority such as a State government, university or Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan.
4. Await evaluation. Nominations are screened and awardees are selected by the Ministry, after which the award is conferred, usually around National Youth Day (12 January) or at a special ceremony.

What kind of work does the National Youth Award recognise?

The award is deliberately broad in the fields it covers, because youth contribution to nation-building takes many forms. Work that has been recognised in the individual category includes community health and sanitation drives, promotion of education and literacy, environmental protection, disaster relief and rehabilitation, promotion of human rights and gender equality, service to persons with disabilities, and organising youth for constructive social action. The common thread the Ministry looks for is that the work is extraordinary, identifiable and verifiable. A measurable, real contribution rather than a routine job or a one-off act.

For organisations, the award recognises registered youth bodies that have run sustained programmes, for example youth clubs, self-help collectives and voluntary organisations mobilising young people for community service over several years. This is why the three-year registration and track-record condition matters: the Ministry is recognising a durable institution, not a newly formed group.

The National Youth Award sits within the Ministry's wider youth-development framework, which also runs bodies such as the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and the National Service Scheme (NSS). Awardees are often drawn from young people already active through these channels, and the honour is frequently conferred around National Youth Day (12 January), the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
