What is the National Youth Corps?

The National Youth Corps (NYC) is a scheme of the Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, implemented through the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS). National Youth Corps engages disciplined and dedicated young people to serve the nation and to work as a channel between the community and government development programmes. It gives young men and women a structured opportunity to contribute to nation-building for a fixed period while receiving a modest honorarium.

According to the scheme guidelines, National Youth Corps enables young men and women in the age group of 18-29 years to serve up to two years on a full-time basis, for which they receive an honorarium of Rs 5,000 per month. The honorarium is inclusive of travelling allowance. National Youth Volunteers (NYVs), as the participants are called, assist in the implementation of youth and community-development activities at the district level.

Who is eligible for the National Youth Corps?

You can apply if:

• You are a young man or woman aged 18 to 29 years.
• You have completed at least Class 10 (Matriculation).
• You are willing to work full-time as a volunteer for up to two years.
• You are an Indian national able to serve in the district/area of engagement.

Selection actively encourages candidates from the weaker sections of society and maintains a gender balance, in line with the objective of inclusive youth participation.

You cannot apply / are not eligible if:

• You are below 18 or above 29 years of age.
• You have not passed Class 10.
• You are seeking regular or permanent employment. The NYC is a voluntary, time-bound engagement and confers no right to a government job.
• You cannot commit to full-time service, since the engagement is not a part-time or stipendiary study arrangement.

The engagement is temporary by design. Completing a term as a National Youth Volunteer does not create any claim to continued engagement or absorption into NYKS or any government service.

How much does the National Youth Corps pay?

A National Youth Volunteer receives an honorarium of Rs 5,000 per month, inclusive of travelling allowance, for the period of engagement. The engagement, including the training period, may run for up to two years. The honorarium is credited to the volunteer's bank account. Beyond the honorarium, the primary "benefit" of the scheme is the experience, training and exposure to community-development work that volunteers gain during their term.

How to apply for the National Youth Corps

1. Watch for a selection announcement by your District Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) or on the NYKS portal — volunteers are selected in cycles, not on a continuous rolling basis.
2. Approach the District Nehru Yuva Kendra in your district to obtain the application format and the local selection details.
3. Submit the application with proof of age (18-29 years), your Class 10 certificate, identity proof and bank details, as per the NYV selection guidelines.
4. Attend the selection process conducted by NYKS at the district level.
5. Join and complete the orientation/training, after which you serve as a National Youth Volunteer and receive the Rs 5,000 monthly honorarium.

How to check your application status

The National Youth Corps does not run on a centralised online portal with a trackable application ID, so status checks happen at the district level rather than through a website login.

1. Confirm your application was received. After submitting your form at the District Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), ask the office to note down your name against the current selection cycle. Since there is no digital acknowledgement receipt, a written or noted confirmation from the NYK staff is your only proof of submission.
2. Follow up directly with the District NYK. The most reliable way to check where your application stands, whether it has been shortlisted, whether a selection date has been fixed, is to visit or call the same District Nehru Yuva Kendra where you applied. Selection is handled locally by NYKS district units, so the district office is the only place that actually holds your file.
3. Watch for the selection announcement. NYKS typically announces shortlists and selection dates through notices displayed at the District NYK office, and sometimes through local intimation to candidates. There is no SMS or email tracking system for this scheme, so candidates need to check back periodically rather than wait for a notification.
4. Use the NYKS portal for general updates. The NYKS website (nyks.nic.in) carries selection guidelines and circulars for each cycle, which can tell you whether a fresh National Youth Volunteer intake has been notified for your state or district, even though it does not show individual application status.
5. After selection, confirm your engagement letter. Selected candidates are informed by the District NYK and asked to join orientation/training. If you cleared the selection process but have not heard back within a reasonable time after the announced date, the district office is again the point of contact, not any central helpline.

Common reasons for rejection

• Age outside the 18-29 window. Applicants who are under 18 or have crossed 29 years at the time of the selection cycle are not considered. Since age is verified against your birth certificate or matriculation certificate, double-check your recorded date of birth against official documents before applying, a mismatch here is one of the most common disqualifiers.
• Not having passed Class 10. The minimum qualification for National Youth Corps is having passed Matriculation. Candidates who have not completed Class 10, even if they are otherwise active in community work, are not eligible and their applications are set aside.
• Inability to commit to full-time service. National Youth Corps is a full-time, two-year engagement, not a part-time or occasional volunteering role. Applicants who indicate they can only serve part-time, or who are simultaneously enrolled in full-time regular study or employment that would prevent full-time availability, are typically screened out during the district-level selection process.
• Incomplete or missing documents at submission. Since there is no online form with mandatory-field validation, applications submitted without age proof, the Class 10 certificate, identity proof or bank account details are often held back or rejected outright by the District NYK, since these are the basic documents needed to process a candidacy. Carry originals and copies of all four when you submit, and ask the NYK office to confirm nothing is missing before you leave.
• Applying outside an active selection cycle. Because NYKS selects volunteers in cycles rather than through continuous rolling intake, applications submitted when no cycle is open for your district may simply not be processed. Confirm with the District NYK that a selection cycle is actually active before submitting, rather than assuming the scheme accepts applications year-round.
• Residence outside the notified area of engagement. Since National Youth Volunteers are engaged to work in a specific district or area, candidates who cannot establish residence or willingness to serve in that area may be passed over in favour of local candidates, particularly where residence proof is sought as part of the selection criteria.
• Failure to appear for the selection process. Even a complete and eligible application is rejected if the candidate does not attend the interview, interaction or selection round conducted by NYKS at the district level. Since notices are often local rather than sent individually, missing the announced date is a frequent and avoidable reason for rejection, staying in regular contact with the District NYK during an active cycle is the best safeguard.
