What is the PM-SPECIAL Training of Geriatric Caregivers scheme?

PM-SPECIAL (Training of Geriatric Caregivers), abbreviated PM-STGC, is a Central Sector skilling initiative of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. According to the DoSJE scheme page, PM-SPECIAL is designed to bridge the growing gap between the rising demand for and the short supply of trained caregivers for India's ageing population, and to create a professional cadre of geriatric caregivers.

India's share of citizens aged 60 and above is climbing steadily, and families increasingly need skilled help to care for elderly members living with conditions such as dementia, Parkinson's, paralysis, prostate problems, Alzheimer's and depression, as well as everyday needs around mobility, nutrition and companionship. PM-SPECIAL responds to this by training people who can attend to the diverse and dynamic needs of the elderly, from recreation and all-round well-being to normal, emergency and crisis-related medical situations, and end-of-life support for patients and families dealing with terminal illness.

The scheme is implemented by DoSJE with the help of the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), the ministry's nodal institute for training on ageing and social defence. Delivery happens through empanelled training partners who run the actual courses. This is a skilling scheme, not a cash-transfer scheme: the benefit to a candidate is free, structured, certified training and a pathway into employment as a caregiver, rather than a direct financial payout.

Who is eligible for PM-SPECIAL geriatric caregiver training?

You can apply if:

• You are an Indian citizen.
• You are generally below 40 years of age for the caregiver role (the exact age band can vary by job role).
• You hold a valid Aadhaar card.
• You meet the minimum educational qualification for the specific job role you apply for.
• You are not involved in substance abuse and can provide documentary proof of age, education and residence.
• You register on the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH).

You cannot apply if you do not meet the age or qualification norms for the role, cannot furnish a valid Aadhaar and supporting documents, or are not an Indian citizen. Because minimum qualifications differ by job role, a candidate eligible for one caregiver role may not be eligible for another: always check the requirement for the specific course before enrolling.

This is a training scheme rather than a personal financial entitlement, so there is no "beneficiary list" to be added to. The way to benefit is to enrol in and complete a PM-SPECIAL course.

What documents are required for PM-SPECIAL?

How to apply for PM-SPECIAL geriatric caregiver training

1. Register on the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) at the official Skill India Digital portal and create your candidate profile.
2. Search for a PM-SPECIAL geriatric caregiver course offered by an empanelled training partner near you, and check that you meet the age and minimum education requirement for that specific job role.
3. Enrol in the course and complete the document verification (Aadhaar, age, education and residence proof) with the training partner.
4. Attend and complete the training, which covers the physical, medical, recreational and emotional aspects of elderly care.
5. Receive your certification recognised under the National Credit Framework, then use the scheme's placement assistance to find caregiver employment.

Because the course roll-out runs through empanelled training partners that are selected periodically (the ministry issues Expressions of Interest for training partners each financial year), the availability of a course in your district depends on which partners are active that year.

What does a trainee get, and what does the trainee not get?

PM-SPECIAL funds the cost of training and certification, and adds post-training support in the form of placement assistance and continuous monitoring to help trainees secure suitable jobs. On completion, the caregiver holds a nationally recognised certificate, which improves employability in hospitals, old-age homes, day-care centres and private households.

What the scheme does not publish is a fixed cash stipend figure paid to the trainee. The DoSJE scheme page and the MyScheme listing describe the training, eligibility and certification, but do not state a guaranteed monthly stipend amount. In keeping with a strict accuracy rule, no stipend figure is asserted here — confirm any financial support directly with the empanelled training partner before enrolling.
