NPS Account Opening (eNPS)

Quick answer

NPS account opening through eNPS gives any Indian citizen aged 18 to 70 a 12-digit Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) issued under PFRDA regulations. The Tier I pension account needs a minimum first contribution of Rs 500 and a minimum of Rs 1,000 a year. Aadhaar or PAN-based online KYC generates the PRAN within minutes on the official eNPS portal.

What is eNPS and who runs it?

eNPS is the online registration and contribution platform for the National Pension System, the regulated retirement savings scheme created by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) under the Ministry of Finance. PFRDA is the regulator; the day-to-day recordkeeping is done by a Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA), and Protean eGov Technologies (formerly NSDL e-Governance) runs the eNPS portal that most citizens use.

NPS under the All Citizen Model is voluntary. You are not required to have an employer, and no employer contribution is involved. According to PFRDA, opening an account gives you a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), a 12-digit identification number that stays with you for life regardless of a change of job, city or pension fund manager.

The account you open has two possible parts:

  • Tier I, the pension account. This is the default and mandatory account. Withdrawals are restricted, and tax benefits apply.
  • Tier II. An optional investment account with no withdrawal restrictions and no tax benefit, which can only be opened on top of an active Tier I.

Opening an account through eNPS is a paperless process. The alternative is to register through a Point of Presence (PoP): typically a bank branch, which performs the same KYC on paper.

Who is eligible to open an NPS account?

You can apply if:

  • You are aged between 18 and 70 years on the date of application.
  • You are an Indian citizen, resident or non-resident, or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.
  • You can complete KYC through Aadhaar, DigiLocker, CKYC or an empanelled bank.
  • You hold a PAN and a bank account in your own name.

You cannot apply if:

  • You are under 18. Minors are not eligible for a regular All Citizen NPS account; a separate minor-focused route exists and is operated with a guardian.
  • You are over 70 at the time of first registration.
  • You already hold a PRAN. NPS permits only one PRAN per person, so a second registration is rejected as a duplicate.
  • You cannot complete KYC, for example because your bank account name does not match your PAN record.

NRIs and OCI applicants can open a Tier I account, but must contribute from an NRE or NRO account, and repatriation of the maturity amount requires the NRE route. PFRDA does not extend the Tier II account to NRIs and OCI holders.

What documents are required for NPS account opening?

Document Mandatory Notes
PAN card Yes Required for All Citizen registration and bank KYC
Aadhaar number or Virtual ID No Needed only if you choose the Aadhaar eKYC route
Bank account proof Yes Cancelled cheque or passbook page; NRE/NRO for NRIs
Scanned signature Yes Uploaded as an image file
Scanned photograph No Skipped when Aadhaar eKYC supplies the photo
Passport or OCI card No Mandatory only for NRI and OCI applicants

Aadhaar eKYC is the fastest route because name, gender, date of birth, address and photograph are pulled directly from UIDAI records, leaving only the bank and nomination details to be typed in.

How to open an NPS account online through eNPS

  1. Open the official portal at enps.nsdl.com and choose National Pension System, then Registration.
  2. Select the applicant category: Individual Subscriber for the All Citizen Model, and choose your KYC mode: Aadhaar online/offline eKYC, DigiLocker, or PAN with an empanelled bank.
  3. Select the account type. Choose Tier I alone, or Tier I and Tier II together if you also want the withdrawable investment account.
  4. Complete identity verification. On the Aadhaar route, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number or 16-digit Virtual ID, generate the OTP, and consent to the use of your Aadhaar details; your demographic data auto-fills.
  5. Fill in the remaining fields: PAN, bank account number and IFSC, employment details, and nomination. Nomination is worth completing at this stage rather than later.
  6. Choose your pension fund manager and investment option, either Active Choice, where you set the equity, corporate bond, government security and alternative asset split yourself, or Auto Choice, where the allocation shifts with your age.
  7. Upload your scanned signature, and your photograph if Aadhaar eKYC did not supply one.
  8. Make the first contribution — a minimum of Rs 500 for Tier I: through net banking, debit card, credit card or UPI, then complete eSign or OTP authentication of the form.
  9. Note the PRAN displayed on the confirmation screen. Save it; you will use it for every future login, contribution and statement download.

How to open an NPS account offline

  1. Visit a Point of Presence Service Provider (PoP-SP), most public and private sector bank branches and several financial institutions are empanelled.
  2. Ask for the Common Subscriber Registration Form (CSRF) and fill it in, including nomination and scheme preference.
  3. Attach self-attested copies of your PAN, address proof and bank proof, with a passport-size photograph.
  4. Pay the first contribution of at least Rs 500 at the counter and collect the acknowledgement receipt.
  5. Track PRAN generation using the receipt number; the PoP forwards the form to the CRA, and the PRAN typically follows within a few working days.

The offline route is the one to use if you have no PAN-linked mobile number, if your Aadhaar mobile is not working, or if you want a branch official to check the form before submission.

What does NPS account opening cost?

There is no government fee for registering on eNPS. What you do pay are the regulated intermediary charges in NPS's unbundled architecture:

  • A bank contribution-verification charge of Rs 20 plus applicable taxes shown on the eNPS portal.
  • A payment gateway charge, which varies by payment mode. UPI contributions on eNPS are capped at Rs 2,000 per transaction.
  • CRA account maintenance charges, recovered from your NPS holdings, not charged at the counter.
  • PoP charges, if you register offline instead.

None of these is a "processing fee" payable to any individual. Registering directly at enps.nsdl.com is free of any agent commission. Third-party websites and consultants that offer to "get your PRAN approved" for a few thousand rupees are selling a service the government already provides at no charge, and no intermediary can speed up PRAN generation, which is automatic.

How do I check my NPS registration status?

  1. Return to enps.nsdl.com and use the option to check the status of a registration using your acknowledgement number or PRAN.
  2. Once the PRAN is generated, log in to the CRA portal with your PRAN and password to view your account, contributions and unit balance.
  3. Download the Transaction Statement from the CRA login for a record of every contribution and the NAV at which units were bought.
  4. Use the NPS mobile app for the same view on a phone.

PRAN generation on the Aadhaar eKYC route is generally immediate once payment clears. Registrations that need manual verification, such as those completed at a PoP branch, usually take a few working days.

Why do NPS applications get rejected or held up?

  • Name mismatch between PAN, Aadhaar and the bank account. The bank verification step fails when the three do not match, and this is the single most common cause of a stalled application.
  • Bank account not in the applicant's own name, or a joint account where the applicant is not the first holder.
  • Aadhaar mobile number not active, so the OTP never arrives. Update the mobile at an Aadhaar centre, or use the PAN plus bank KYC route instead.
  • Unreadable signature or photograph upload, or a file outside the size limits shown on screen.
  • Duplicate PRAN. The applicant already has an NPS account, sometimes one opened years ago through an employer and forgotten.
  • Incomplete eSign, where the form was filled but never authenticated. An unsigned registration does not become an account.

Fixing a name mismatch is usually a matter of correcting the record at its source, Aadhaar at a UIDAI enrolment centre, PAN through the Income Tax e-filing portal, and then re-attempting registration.

Where do I complain about an NPS problem?

  • eNPS subscriber helpline: 1800 2100 080
  • eNPS email: enps@proteantech.in
  • CRA grievance portal: cra.nps-proteantech.in, where you can raise a grievance against a PoP, the CRA or a pension fund and get a token number.
  • PFRDA: grievances not resolved at the CRA level can be escalated to the regulator at pfrda.org.in.

Keep your PRAN and acknowledgement number handy when you call. No NPS official, bank or helpline will ask you for your OTP, password or card details, a caller who does is running a fraud, not processing your account.

How to apply

The scheme page already walks through the eNPS online steps and the offline PoP-SP process in detail. Before you start either route, and after you finish it, a few practical choices decide how smoothly the application goes. This section covers what to prepare beforehand, how the KYC routes actually differ, and what to do once the PRAN is issued.

Choose your KYC route before you open the form

eNPS offers more than one way to verify identity, and picking the wrong one for your situation is the most common reason people abandon the form halfway:

  • Aadhaar online eKYC. Fastest route if your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar. The OTP arrives in seconds and your name, date of birth, address and photograph auto-fill from UIDAI records, so you only type in bank and nomination details.
  • Aadhaar offline eKYC (XML/Zip file). Use this if your Aadhaar-linked mobile is not with you at the time of application. You generate an offline eKYC XML from the UIDAI website separately, then upload that file to eNPS instead of taking an OTP.
  • DigiLocker. Pulls your Aadhaar-linked documents through DigiLocker's own login rather than an Aadhaar OTP. Useful if you already use DigiLocker regularly and prefer not to re-enter your Aadhaar number on a different portal.
  • PAN plus bank KYC. No Aadhaar step at all. The bank you name for KYC verifies your identity against its own records. This route is slower because it depends on the bank's verification turnaround, but it is the only option for applicants who cannot or do not want to use Aadhaar-based verification.

Decide which route fits your situation before you begin. Switching routes midway means restarting the form.

What to keep ready before you start the online form

  • Your PAN number, typed exactly as it appears on the card.
  • A bank account in your own name with the account number and IFSC code at hand, since a joint account where you are not the first holder will fail verification later.
  • Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, if you are using the online eKYC route, since the OTP goes only to that number.
  • A scanned image of your signature ready on your device; you will be asked to upload it during the form, and Aadhaar eKYC does not supply a signature the way it supplies a photograph.
  • Nomination details, meaning the full name, date of birth and relationship of the person you want to nominate. Filling this in during registration avoids a separate nomination update later.
  • A payment method for the first contribution, at least Rs 500 for Tier I, since the account is not created until that payment clears.

Activating Tier II after Tier I is already open

If you opened only a Tier I account and later want the optional Tier II investment account, you do not repeat the full registration. Log in to eNPS with your existing PRAN, choose the option to activate Tier II, complete the KYC-linked authentication again (Aadhaar OTP or eSign, depending on how Tier I was opened), and make the minimum Tier II contribution. No new PRAN is issued, since one person holds only one PRAN for both tiers.

After the PRAN is issued

  • Download the e-PRAN card (a PDF) from the confirmation screen or your registered email; a physical laminated card can be ordered separately for a small fee but is not required to operate the account.
  • Register on the CRA portal or NPS mobile app using the PRAN, so future contributions, statements and pension fund manager changes do not depend on eNPS alone.
  • If you registered through the PAN plus bank KYC route and later want to add Aadhaar to your profile for faster future logins, this can be done from within your CRA account settings rather than by reapplying.
  • Set a calendar reminder for the Rs 1,000 annual minimum contribution to Tier I. Missing it does not close the account, but it freezes it until the next contribution is made.

If you are a subsequent applicant with an existing PRAN

Anyone who already has a PRAN from a past employer-linked NPS registration should not apply again through eNPS. Retrieve the existing PRAN through the CRA portal's forgot-PRAN option using your registered PAN or Aadhaar, since a fresh application under the All Citizen Model will be flagged and rejected as a duplicate.

Frequently asked questions

Who can open an NPS account?

Any Indian citizen, resident or non-resident, and any Overseas Citizen of India aged between 18 and 70 years can open an NPS account under the All Citizen Model, according to PFRDA. The applicant must complete KYC. There is no upper income limit and no employer requirement.

What is the minimum amount needed to open an NPS Tier I account?

Rs 500 is the minimum contribution to open an NPS Tier I account, and Rs 1,000 is the minimum you must contribute in a financial year to keep it active. Falling below the annual minimum freezes the account until you make a contribution.

Is eNPS registration free?

Registration on the eNPS portal has no separate government charge, but intermediary charges apply to your contribution. The portal shows a bank contribution-verification charge of Rs 20 plus applicable taxes, and the payment gateway charge depends on the mode you choose. No agent is needed and none can charge you for "approving" a PRAN.

How long does it take to get a PRAN?

A PRAN is generated immediately once registration and the first payment are confirmed on eNPS, usually within the same session. The 12-digit number is shown on screen and emailed to you; a physical PRAN card is optional and chargeable.

Do I need a PAN to open an NPS account online?

Yes for most applicants. PAN is required for the All Citizen Model registration and for bank-based KYC on eNPS. Aadhaar can supply your demographic details, but PAN remains part of the record.

Can I open NPS if I already have EPF or a company pension?

Yes. NPS under the All Citizen Model is voluntary and independent of EPF, gratuity or any employer pension. You may hold NPS alongside them, and your PRAN stays the same even if you change jobs or move cities.

What happens if I stop contributing to NPS?

The account is frozen if you do not meet the minimum annual contribution of Rs 1,000 in Tier I. PFRDA allows reactivation simply by making a contribution; the account is closed only when you formally exit NPS.

When can I withdraw money from NPS Tier I?

Normal exit is at age 60, when up to 60 per cent can be taken as a lump sum and at least 40 per cent must buy an annuity, with the annuity waived if the corpus is under Rs 5 lakh. Partial withdrawal of up to 25 per cent of your own contributions is allowed after 3 years for defined reasons, up to three times in a lifetime.

Can I open more than one NPS account?

No. One person can hold only one PRAN under NPS. If you try to register again, the system flags the duplicate; you should instead use your existing PRAN and, if needed, activate a Tier II account under it.
