Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana vs Janani Suraksha Yojana: Which Should You Claim?
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) and Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) are the two cash schemes an expecting mother in India hears about most, and the good news is that you do not have to choose between them, most eligible women can hold both. PMMVY, run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, is a conditional maternity benefit paid for ante-natal care and immunisation; JSY, run by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is a delivery-linked payment for giving birth in a health facility. This article compares the two so you know what each pays, who each suits, and how they stack.
For the full PMMVY eligibility, instalment schedule and documents, read the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana guide. In brief, PMMVY pays Rs 5,000 for a first child and Rs 6,000 for a second girl child through Aadhaar-based DBT.
PMMVY vs JSY at a glance
| Feature | PMMVY | Janani Suraksha Yojana |
|---|---|---|
| Ministry | Women and Child Development | Health and Family Welfare (NHM) |
| What it rewards | Pregnancy registration, ANC, immunisation | Institutional (facility) delivery |
| Typical amount | Rs 5,000 (first child); Rs 6,000 (second girl child) | Rs 1,000–Rs 1,400 rural, Rs 600–Rs 1,000 urban (varies by state category) |
| Payment trigger | Health milestones, before and after birth | At the time of institutional delivery |
| Delivery required at facility | No | Yes |
| Delivered through | Anganwadi / ASHA / PMMVY portal | Health facility / ASHA |
JSY amounts differ between Low Performing States (LPS) and High Performing States (HPS), and between rural and urban areas, as set out by the National Health Mission. PMMVY amounts are uniform nationwide.
Can you hold both PMMVY and JSY?
Yes. PMMVY and JSY are separate programmes with separate budgets and separate ministries, and an eligible woman can receive both. The PMMVY implementation guidelines explicitly account the JSY institutional-delivery incentive towards total maternity benefit, so that a woman receives on average around Rs 6,000 for the first child across the two schemes. Claiming JSY does not reduce your PMMVY entitlement or vice versa. They are triggered by different events (health milestones for PMMVY, facility delivery for JSY).
Which suits you?
- If you deliver in a government or accredited private facility, claim both. JSY rewards the institutional delivery; PMMVY rewards the ANC and immunisation milestones around it.
- If you are claiming for your first living child, PMMVY is the larger and more structured benefit at Rs 5,000, split across pregnancy and post-birth conditions.
- If your second child is a girl, PMMVY adds a dedicated Rs 6,000 single instalment — JSY has no equivalent girl-child top-up.
- If you cannot reach a health facility for delivery, JSY may not apply, but PMMVY can still be claimed on its ante-natal and immunisation conditions.
Which should you apply for first?
Register for PMMVY during pregnancy, the first Rs 3,000 instalment is tied to pregnancy registration and ante-natal check-ups, and registration closes 270 days after childbirth. JSY is claimed around the delivery itself, usually with the ASHA worker who accompanies you to the facility. Doing PMMVY registration early means you do not lose the pregnancy-linked instalment while waiting on the delivery.
FAQ
Does claiming JSY reduce my PMMVY money? No. They are separate schemes; the JSY incentive is accounted towards overall maternity benefit but does not cut your PMMVY instalments.
Are both delivered to the same bank account? Both use DBT to an Aadhaar-seeded account in the mother's name, but they are processed by different departments, so credits may arrive on different dates.
Who do I ask about JSY? Your ASHA worker and the health facility handle JSY; your Anganwadi worker handles PMMVY. The PMMVY and POSHAN helpline is 1515.
Is there a state maternity scheme too? Several states run their own maternity schemes. Check with your Anganwadi worker, as state benefits are separate from these two central schemes.
