PMMVY: Why Applications Get Rejected and How to Fix It
This is a supporting guide for Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY). See the main guide for full eligibility, benefits and documents.
Why do PMMVY applications and payments fail?
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana claims fail for two distinct kinds of reason: eligibility/conditionality problems that block approval, and bank problems that block the money after approval. Most "rejections" people report are actually the second kind. An approved instalment that never lands because the account is not Aadhaar-seeded. This is the troubleshooting companion to the main Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) guide, which covers the Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000 benefits and full eligibility.
Bank-side failures (approved but not paid)
Reason 1: Account not Aadhaar-seeded. PMMVY pays through Direct Benefit Transfer. An account not linked to your Aadhaar cannot receive the DBT, so an approved instalment stalls. Fix: Seed your Aadhaar with your bank or post office account at the branch.
Reason 2: Account not in the mother's own name. A joint account, or the husband's account, is not accepted. Fix: Use an account in your own name and update it in your PMMVY record.
Reason 3: Name mismatch between Aadhaar and bank. Different spellings make the transfer bounce. Fix: Align the name on the bank record with your Aadhaar exactly, then have the DBT reprocessed.
Approval-side failures (never gets cleared)
Reason 4: Conditionality not met or not recorded. Each instalment is tied to a health milestone, pregnancy registration and ANC for the first instalment, birth registration and the 14-week immunisation cycle for later instalments. If those details are missing from the MCP card entry on the portal, the instalment stays unapproved. Fix: Enter the ANC dates, birth registration and immunisation record on the portal (or through your Anganwadi worker) so the conditionality is recorded.
Reason 5: Eligibility proof not uploaded or illegible. PMMVY needs one category proof, SC/ST certificate, 40% disability certificate, BPL/NFSA ration card, MGNREGA job card, e-Shram card, PM-KISAN record, Ayushman Bharat card, or an income certificate showing family income below Rs 8 lakh. A missing or unreadable upload stalls verification. Fix: Upload one clear, legible eligibility proof. Only one is needed.
Reason 6: Registration beyond 270 days from childbirth. The window to register closes at 270 days after childbirth; a later attempt cannot be accepted for that pregnancy. Fix: There is no override for a missed 270-day window — register during pregnancy for future claims, since the first instalment is tied to pregnancy registration anyway.
Reason 7: Applicant genuinely ineligible. Women in regular Central/State Government or PSU employment, women already drawing similar maternity benefit under another law, those outside the 18 years 7 months to under 55 years band at childbirth, or claims for a second child who is a boy or a third child, are not payable. Fix: These are scheme rules, not defects to correct. Confirm your category before applying.
How to fix a rejected or stalled PMMVY claim
- Log in at pmmvy.wcd.gov.in and read the exact status/reason, or ask your Anganwadi worker to read it from the field app.
- Separate the cause: is it a bank problem (approved, unpaid) or an approval problem (never cleared)?
- For bank problems, fix Aadhaar seeding, account ownership and name spelling at the branch.
- For approval problems, add the missing conditionality data or eligibility proof through the portal or your Anganwadi worker.
- Corrections to application data go through the Anganwadi worker or your citizen login.
- Escalate via Lodge / Track Grievances on pmmvy.wcd.gov.in, or call the helpline 1515 (earlier 14408 still works).
Miscarriage or stillbirth is not a disqualification
The PMMVY FAQs published by the Ministry of Women and Child Development state that a beneficiary who suffers a miscarriage or stillbirth retains any instalment already drawn and is treated as a fresh beneficiary in any future pregnancy, so this is never a permanent rejection.
PMMVY enrolment and correction are free. No Anganwadi worker, ASHA or agent may charge a fee, and no official will ask for your OTP or bank PIN to "unblock" a payment.
