What is the Shilp Guru Award?

Shilp Guru Award is the highest national recognition given to a handicrafts artisan in India. According to the myScheme portal and the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), the award was instituted in 2002, the year that marked the golden jubilee of India's independence, to honour master craftspersons who have preserved rare craft traditions and produced work of exceptional artistic and technical merit.

The award is conferred by the Ministry of Textiles through its Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts). It sits at the very top of the handicrafts honours system, above the National Award and the Merit Certificate, and is intended to recognise not just individual skill but a craftsperson's role as a "guru" who keeps a living tradition alive and passes it to the next generation.

Each Shilp Guru Award consists of:

• A cash prize of Rs 2,00,000
• One mounted gold coin
• One shawl
• One Tamrapatra (an inscribed certificate of merit)

The honour is deliberately rare. The scheme provides for a maximum of 10 awards in a year, and in practice they are conferred in select years rather than annually. This scarcity is part of what makes the Shilp Guru the most prestigious title an Indian craftsperson can hold.

Who is eligible for the Shilp Guru Award?

You can be considered if:

• You are an Indian citizen.
• You are at least 55 years old on the date of application.
• You have at least 20 years of experience practising your craft.
• You have created outstanding, innovative masterpieces that demonstrate extraordinary command of the craft.
• You have, in most cases, already received a National Award, State Award or Merit Certificate of exceptional standing, or can otherwise demonstrate an immense contribution to the handicrafts sector.

The selection favours craftspersons who have not only mastered a traditional skill but have also innovated within it and trained others, keeping the craft economically and culturally viable.

You cannot apply if:

• You are not an Indian citizen.
• You are below 55 years of age or have fewer than 20 years of documented craft experience.
• You are a handloom weaver: handloom artisans are honoured through the separate Sant Kabir Award and National Handloom Awards, not the Shilp Guru.
• You are applying as an institution, company or society. The Shilp Guru is an individual honour for a practising craftsperson, not an organisational grant.

Because the award is positioned as a lifetime pinnacle, a person who has already received the Shilp Guru is not eligible again.

How to apply for the Shilp Guru Award

The Shilp Guru Award uses an offline application process routed through state handicrafts machinery. According to the scheme details published on myScheme:

1. Obtain the prescribed application form from your nearest District Industries Centre, the state Directorate of Industries, or a Regional Development Centre / Marketing and Service Extension Centre for Handicrafts.
2. Fill in the form with your personal details, craft, years of experience and the awards you already hold.
3. Attach supporting documents — age proof, proof of experience, copies of earlier award citations, and clear photographs of the masterpieces you have created.
4. Submit the completed application to the designated state office within the window notified for that award cycle.
5. Follow the three-tier selection, in which a State Level Selection Committee shortlists entries, a Headquarters Level Committee scrutinises them, and a Central Selection Committee makes the final recommendation.

Awardees are then invited to a formal ceremony where the cash prize, gold coin, shawl and Tamrapatra are presented.

How is the Shilp Guru different from the National Award?

The Ministry of Textiles runs a tiered set of handicrafts honours. The Merit Certificate and National Award recognise excellence at earlier stages of a craftsperson's career, while the Shilp Guru Award is reserved for the most accomplished masters: typically those who already hold a National Award and have gone on to create landmark work and train a lineage of artisans. In effect, the National Award recognises an outstanding craftsperson, and the Shilp Guru recognises an outstanding teacher and torch-bearer of the craft.
