What is the Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension Scheme?

Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension Scheme, commonly written as SUWPS, is a monthly pension of Rs 2,000 paid by the Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim to unmarried women of Below Poverty Line households who have attained the age of 45 years.

According to the department's online pension portal at pensionscheme.sikkim.gov.in, SUWPS is classed as a State Innovative Scheme, and the portal's incentives table records the rate as "Rs. 2000/- per month" against the note "100% State Innovative Scheme". That phrase carries real meaning: unlike the Indira Gandhi National Old Age, Widow and Disability pensions that the same portal also handles, SUWPS has no central share. Sikkim funds all of it.

The scheme sits alongside six others on the same single-window portal:

Scheme on the Sikkim pension portal Rate
Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension (IGNOAPS) Rs 1,500 per month for ages 60–69; Rs 2,000 for 70 and above; Rs 2,500 for 80 and above
Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension (IGNWPS) Rs 2,000 per month
Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension (IGNDPS) Rs 2,000 per month
National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) One-time grant of Rs 30,000
Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension (SUWPS) Rs 2,000 per month
Chief Minister's State Disability Pension (CMDPS) Rs 1,500 per month
Sikkim Grant of Award to Transgender (SGATT) Rs 12,000 per month from 0–6 years, free education to graduation, Rs 500 per month if unemployed after qualifying

The reason a scheme like this exists is specific to how social security is designed elsewhere. India's national safety net pays a widow pension and an old age pension, but a never-married woman in her late forties or fifties falls between the two: she is too young for the old age pension at 60 and she is not a widow. SUWPS closes exactly that gap, from age 45 onward.

Who is eligible for the Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension Scheme?

The pension portal splits its conditions into general criteria that apply to every scheme it hosts, and additional specific criteria for each scheme.

You can apply if all of these are true.

  • You are a woman who has never married, and you hold an unmarried certificate from the competent authority. The portal lists "Should have Unmarried Certificate" as the specific document for SUWPS.
  • You have attained the age of 45 years. This is the second specific criterion for the scheme.
  • You possess the Sikkim Subject Certificate, Certificate of Identification or Residential Certificate, as the case may be.
  • You belong to a BPL household and hold an Antodaya Anna Yojana or Priority Household ration card, in terms of rule 6 of the Sikkim Food Security Rules, 2014 read with Notification No. 4/SJE&WD dated 1 February 2017. The portal cites this rule and notification by name.
  • You possess an Aadhaar card.
  • You have opened a bank account under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, into which the pension is credited.

You cannot apply, or are not eligible, in these situations.

  • You are married, divorced or widowed. A widow is instead covered by the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme on the same portal, which pays Rs 2,000 per month from the age of 21 with the husband's death certificate and a non-marriage certificate.
  • You are under 45 years of age.
  • Your household is not Below Poverty Line and holds no Antodaya Anna Yojana or Priority Household ration card. An APL household is outside the general criteria for every pension on this portal.
  • You cannot produce a Sikkim Subject Certificate, Certificate of Identification or Residential Certificate. Residence in Sikkim without one of these documents is not enough.
  • You have no Aadhaar card or no PMJDY bank account, since the pension is paid only by Direct Benefit Transfer.
  • You are already drawing another pension under the National Social Assistance Programme or another state scheme. The pensions on this portal are not meant to be stacked, which is why the Chief Minister's State Disability Pension expressly excludes anyone covered by the national disability pension.

Two points are worth stating plainly because they are often reported inconsistently. First, the official portal states the age condition only as "Should Have Attained the age of 45 years", it publishes no upper age limit, though in practice a beneficiary reaching 60 would ordinarily qualify for the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension instead. Second, several scheme directories date the launch of SUWPS to 2013 under what was then the Department of Women and Child Welfare; that launch year is not stated on the current portal, so treat it as background rather than as an official figure.

How to apply for the Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension Scheme

  1. Collect the unmarried certificate first. This is the one document unique to SUWPS, and it takes the longest. Approach your Gram Panchayat, Gram Vikas Adhikari or Sub-Divisional Magistrate, depending on whether you live in a rural or urban area, and ask for a non-marriage certificate in your name.
  2. Check that your ration card and bank account qualify. You need an Antodaya Anna Yojana or Priority Household ration card, and a bank account opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. If your account is an ordinary savings account, ask the branch to confirm whether it can be treated as a PMJDY account or open one.
  3. Open the pension portal at pensionscheme.sikkim.gov.in and use the Apply Now option under Online Registration System. Register with your name, gender, mobile number and email address to receive login credentials.
  4. Log in and select "Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension" from the list of seven schemes shown on the portal.
  5. Fill in the personal, family and bank details and upload scanned copies of the SSC or COI, ration card, Aadhaar, unmarried certificate, proof of age and bank passbook. Submit and note the application number shown on screen.
  6. Follow up with your District Social Welfare Officer or the Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department office in your district if the status does not move. The department has also notified District Collectors as District Officers for its work, and that route is listed on the department's page on sikkim.gov.in.

If you cannot apply online, take the same set of documents to your district Women and Child Welfare or Social Welfare office and submit the application there; the portal is a single-window facility rather than the only channel.

How is the pension paid and how do I keep it running?

SUWPS pays Rs 2,000 every month by Direct Benefit Transfer into the beneficiary's PMJDY bank account. There is no cash disbursement and no re-application each year.

The one continuing obligation is the annual life certificate. The pension portal's home page carries a standing notice, for the current cycle it reads "Last Date for Submission of Life Certificate 28-Feb-2026 for the year 2026", and the notice is marked expired once the window closes. A beneficiary who misses the window should contact the District Social Welfare Officer immediately rather than wait for the next year's notice, because payments are held until the certificate is on record.

Eligibility is also a continuing test, not just an entry test. If a beneficiary marries, if the household loses its AAY or Priority Household ration card, or if she begins drawing another pension, she stops qualifying and the payment is discontinued.

How to check your SUWPS application status

  1. Log in to pensionscheme.sikkim.gov.in with the credentials created at registration and open your application to see its current stage.
  2. Keep the application number issued at submission — the district office will ask for it before it can trace a file.
  3. Check the bank account, since an approved pension shows up as a monthly DBT credit even before any letter reaches you.
  4. Ask the District Social Welfare Officer if the portal shows no movement for several weeks; verification of the ration card, the unmarried certificate and the residence document happens at district level.

Why SUWPS applications get rejected

  • No unmarried certificate, or a certificate from an authority the district office does not accept. This is the single commonest problem.
  • Ration card is APL, or is neither Antodaya Anna Yojana nor Priority Household. The BPL condition is drawn from rule 6 of the Sikkim Food Security Rules, 2014 and is applied strictly.
  • Age not established as 45 or above because no acceptable proof of age was uploaded.
  • Bank account is not a PMJDY account, or the name on the account does not match the name on Aadhaar, so the DBT mandate fails.
  • Already covered by another pension, most often the widow or old age pension, which makes the applicant a duplicate on the same portal.
  • No Sikkim Subject Certificate, Certificate of Identification or Residential Certificate attached.

Most of these are curable. A name mismatch between Aadhaar and the bank record is fixed at the bank branch; a missing certificate is re-submitted through the same portal login without starting a fresh application.

Help and grievance redressal

  • Online pension portal: pensionscheme.sikkim.gov.in, the single-window system for all seven National Social Assistance Programme and State Innovative pension schemes in Sikkim, developed by the Department of Information Technology, Government of Sikkim.
  • Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department: its department page on sikkim.gov.in lists the NSAP Division, the Women Section and the District Collectors appointed as District Officers.
  • District Social Welfare Officer in your district. The practical first stop for a stuck application or a stopped payment. The department has not published a dedicated pension helpline number, so avoid numbers circulated on unofficial scheme websites and route queries through the portal or your district office.

Applying for SUWPS is free. The portal charges nothing, and no agent can charge a fee for adding a name to the pension list.

Frequently asked questions

How much pension is paid under the Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension Scheme?

Rs 2,000 per month is paid under SUWPS. The Women and Child Welfare Department's pension portal lists "Unmarried Women Pension Scheme — Rs. 2000/- per month" and marks it a "100% State Innovative Scheme", meaning the entire cost is borne by the Government of Sikkim with no central share.

What is the minimum age for the Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension Scheme?

An applicant must have attained the age of 45 years. The pension portal lists this as the additional specific criterion for SUWPS, on top of the general criteria of a Sikkim residence document, BPL ration card, Aadhaar and a Jan Dhan bank account.

Who is not eligible for the Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension Scheme?

Women who are or have been married, women whose household is not Below Poverty Line, women under 45, and women who cannot produce a Sikkim Subject Certificate, Certificate of Identification or Residential Certificate cannot apply. A woman already drawing another pension under the National Social Assistance Programme is also not eligible on the same count.

Which department runs SUWPS?

The Women, Child, Senior Citizen and Divyangjan Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, runs the scheme through its NSAP Division. The online pension portal is branded "Govt. of Sikkim, Women & Child Welfare Department" and is developed by the Department of Information Technology.

How do I apply for the Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension Scheme online?

Open pensionscheme.sikkim.gov.in, use the Apply Now option to register with your name, mobile number and email, then log in and select Sikkim Unmarried Women Pension from the list of seven schemes on the portal. Fill the form, upload the documents and note the application number.

What proof of being unmarried is accepted?

An unmarried or non-marriage certificate issued by the competent local authority. In Sikkim this is normally issued by the Gram Vikas Adhikari or Panchayat for rural applicants and by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate for urban applicants; confirm the issuing authority with your District Social Welfare Officer before applying.

What happens to the pension if a beneficiary marries?

The pension stops, because being unmarried is a continuing condition of the scheme and not merely an entry test. The same applies if the household ceases to hold an Antodaya Anna Yojana or Priority Household ration card, or if the beneficiary starts drawing another state or central pension.

Do beneficiaries have to submit anything every year?

Yes — a life certificate. The pension portal's home page carries the notice "Last Date for Submission of Life Certificate 28-Feb-2026 for the year 2026", and payments are interrupted where the certificate is not filed in time.
