What is the Poompuhar District Craft Award?

Poompuhar District Craft Award, in Tamil, Maavatta Kaithiran Virudhu: is the district-level handicrafts honour of the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, which trades as Poompuhar under the Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. The award was launched in 2011-12 to recognise and honour artisans district by district.

Each awardee receives:

Component Detail
Cash prize Rs 10,000
Medal Silver medal
Certificate Certificate of the award

The design of the award is the point worth understanding. Tamil Nadu's handicrafts are geographically specific: bronze icon casting in Swamimalai, stone sculpture in Mamallapuram, art plates in Thanjavur, palm leaf and korai grass work in Thanjavur and Pudukkottai, wood carving, brass and bell metal, kalamkari and Tanjore painting, and a single state-level award would concentrate recognition in a handful of famous craft towns. By judging artisans within their own district, the District Craft Award reaches craftspersons who would never win at state level.

Who is eligible for the Poompuhar District Craft Award, and who is not eligible?

You can apply if:

  • You are a practising handicraft artisan, that is a person who makes the object with their own hands.
  • You work in the handicraft industry in Tamil Nadu and are a native of Tamil Nadu, which is the residence condition Poompuhar applies across its craft awards.
  • You are a resident of the district in which you are applying, since the award is decided district-wise.
  • You can produce work for assessment, the award turns on the craft, so the submitted piece and the photographs of your work carry the case.

You cannot receive this award if:

  • You are a trader, exporter, retailer or unit owner who does not work at the craft yourself. You are not eligible in this category, and should look at the Handicrafts Export Award or the Team Production Award instead.
  • You are applying in a district other than the one where you live and work. Each district's awards go to that district's artisans.
  • You apply after the notified closing date for the year.
  • You are looking for income support. This is a recognition award of Rs 10,000, not a monthly benefit, and an artisan in financial difficulty should ask the Assistant Director (Handicrafts) about the department's artisan welfare and credit schemes instead.

Age is not a bar. Unlike the Living Craft Treasure Award, which is confined to craftspersons 65 years of age and above, the District Craft Award carries no published minimum age. That makes it the natural first award for a craftsperson in mid-career, and young craftspersons additionally have the Gen Next competition notified in the same cycle.

There is no income condition, no education condition and no community condition.

How to apply for the Poompuhar District Craft Award

  1. Watch the Poompuhar notifications. The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation publishes award notifications, application forms and corrigenda as downloadable PDFs on the news and events page of tnhdc.poompuhar.com. All the craft awards are notified together in one cycle.
  2. Download the application form for the Poompuhar District Craft Award for the current year, and read any corrigendum. Closing dates for these awards are routinely extended โ€” submissions for the 2025-26 round of the District Craft Award and the other awards were extended up to 10 September 2025.
  3. Choose and prepare the work you will submit. The award is judged on craft, so submit a piece that shows the full range of the technique you practise rather than the piece that is easiest to transport.
  4. Photograph your body of work and write a short account of your training, your lineage or guru, the years you have practised, and any earlier awards or exhibitions.
  5. Assemble the documents: Aadhaar, age proof, residence proof for your district, your handicrafts artisan or Pehchan card if you hold one, and a bank passbook copy in your own name.
  6. Get a recommendation if you can. A recommendation from the Manager of a Poompuhar showroom or manufacturing unit, or from the Area Assistant Director (Handicrafts), carries weight; it is mandatory for the Living Craft Treasure Award and useful here.
  7. Submit the completed application with the enclosures to the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation within the notified date and keep proof of submission.
  8. Attend the award function if selected, where the Rs 10,000 cash prize, the silver medal and the certificate are presented.

How the Poompuhar craft awards fit together

Award Cash Medal Who it is for
Living Craft Treasure Award Rs 1,00,000 8 gram gold medal, thamirapattiram Craftspersons above 65 years; 10 selected annually; introduced 2013-14
Poompuhar State Award Rs 50,000 4 gram gold medal, thamirapattiram Top artisans at state level
Poompuhar District Craft Award Rs 10,000 Silver medal Artisans honoured district-wise; introduced 2011-12
Team Production Award Notified each year ; Production groups rather than individuals
Handicrafts Export Award Notified each year ; Exporters of handicrafts
Utility Based Handicrafts Award Notified each year : Handicraft products designed for everyday use
Gen Next competition Notified each year : Young craftspersons

A craftsperson's realistic progression is District Craft Award, then Poompuhar State Award, then Living Craft Treasure after 65. Each earlier award strengthens the file for the next one, which is why applying at district level early in a career matters more than the Rs 10,000 itself.

How to check the status of your application

  1. Check the news and events page at tnhdc.poompuhar.com, where notifications, extensions of dates and results are published as PDFs.
  2. Call the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation on 044-28521271 or write to info@poompuhar.com, which are the corporation's published contacts.
  3. Ask the Manager of your nearest Poompuhar showroom or manufacturing unit whether the district applications have been forwarded.
  4. Ask the Area Assistant Director (Handicrafts) for your region, who handles artisan matters at field level.

Why applications for the District Craft Award fail

  • Submitted after the closing date. Dates are extended frequently, but the extended date is final. Watch the corrigendum PDFs on the Poompuhar site rather than relying on word of mouth.
  • Weak submission piece. The award is decided on craft. A piece that does not show the difficult parts of the technique undersells a good artisan.
  • No photographic record of past work. A single object tells the committee little about a career; a photographed body of work tells it a great deal.
  • Applicant is not the maker. Applications from traders and unit owners who do not work the craft themselves fall outside the category.
  • Wrong district. Apply where you live and work.
  • No bank account in the artisan's own name, which delays payment of the cash prize even after selection.

Where to ask and where to complain

  • Corporation level: the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (Poompuhar), on 044-28521271 or at info@poompuhar.com.
  • Field level: the Area Assistant Director (Handicrafts) and the Managers of Poompuhar showrooms and manufacturing units across Tamil Nadu.
  • Department level: the Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Department, Government of Tamil Nadu.

No fee is charged for an award application, and no intermediary can secure an award for an artisan.
