Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of Aids and Appliances: Why Applications Get Rejected and How to Fix It
Applications to ADIP (Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/Fitting of Aids and Appliances) are most often rejected for three eligibility reasons; disability below the benchmark, income above the ceiling, or a duplicate aid claimed too soon, and for document mismatches at verification. ADIP, run by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), supplies a physical assistive device rather than cash, so its checks focus on the disability certificate, the income certificate and identity matching. Here is each common rejection and how to fix it before you reapply on the ARJUN portal.
Rejection 1: Disability below 40 per cent
ADIP requires a disability certificate showing at least 40 per cent disability, the benchmark threshold. A certificate below 40 per cent is rejected irrespective of income, and a UDID card that does not carry the qualifying percentage fails the same test.
Fix: Obtain a certificate from a competent medical authority stating 40 per cent or more, or get your UDID card issued with the disability percentage recorded. If your assessed disability is genuinely below 40 per cent, ADIP is not available, and there is no way to correct that.
Rejection 2: Income above Rs 30,000 a month
The monthly income from all sources must not exceed Rs 30,000. Applicants over this ceiling are rejected. For a dependant, the parent's or guardian's income is counted, so a child of a higher-earning parent is also excluded. A related failure is an income certificate that is expired or from a non-competent authority.
Fix: Submit a current income certificate from the competent authority. Remember the two slabs: up to Rs 22,500 a month gets the aid free, and Rs 22,501–30,000 gets 50 per cent, declaring income accurately places you in the right slab rather than getting you rejected.
Rejection 3: Same aid received within three years
ADIP will not give the same aid twice inside three years from any source: ADIP itself, a state scheme, a CSR programme or a charity. Such duplicate claims are detected at verification and rejected. For children below 12 the interval is shorter, one year, because they outgrow devices quickly.
Fix: Wait until the three-year period (one year for under-12s) is complete. Do not conceal a prior device — verification cross-checks records, and concealment fails the claim.
Rejection 4: Aadhaar / certificate / application mismatch
A frequent, avoidable rejection is a mismatch between the Aadhaar, the disability certificate and the application; most often a difference in name spelling or date of birth. The system and the assessment team treat these as unverified identity.
Fix: Make the name and date of birth identical across Aadhaar, disability certificate, UDID card and the ARJUN application. Correct whichever document is wrong before resubmitting.
Rejection 5: Absence from the assessment camp
Being called for assessment and not attending closes the application. The camp is where the team confirms the correct device and size, so missing it ends the process.
Fix: Attend the assessment camp when called, carrying your originals. If you genuinely could not attend, re-register and wait for the next camp rather than expecting the closed application to revive on its own.
Rejection 6: Wrong or unsuitable device requested
Requesting a device not on the approved list, or one not suitable for your assessed disability, is rejected. ADIP also does not pay cash instead of the device, and does not fund general medical treatment, only aids, appliances and specified interventions such as cochlear implants.
Fix: Choose from the approved device list, and let the assessment team's recommendation drive the device and specification. Accept the device matched to your disability rather than insisting on a specific model.
How to fix and resubmit
- Read the exact reason recorded on the ARJUN portal (adip.depwd.gov.in) against your application.
- Cure the named defect, updated certificate, current income certificate, corrected name/DOB, or waiting out the three-year gap.
- Resubmit on ARJUN, or register afresh for the next assessment camp if the earlier application was closed.
