What is the Retired Sportsperson Pension Scheme in Gujarat?

Retired Sportsperson Pension Scheme is listed as a scheme of the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, Government of Gujarat. Its purpose is financial support for sportspersons of the state after their competitive career has ended — the point at which training stipends, competition allowances and selection-based support all stop, and a former athlete who did not move into coaching or a government job has no sport-linked income at all.

Who is eligible for the Gujarat retired sportsperson pension?

Based on the scheme's stated purpose and the pattern used by Gujarat's other sports schemes, the following conditions apply. Confirm each of them with the department before you build a claim around them.

A sportsperson may be considered if:

• The applicant is a sportsperson of Gujarat, with a domicile certificate to prove it.
• The applicant has retired from active competitive sport.
• The applicant has a record of achievement at recognised state, national or international level, certified by the relevant federation.
• The applicant is not drawing another sportsperson pension for the same career.

A sportsperson is not eligible if:

• The applicant is still competing actively. Serving athletes are supported through Shaktidoot, the Centres of Excellence and Khel Maha Kumbh prize money instead, and cannot apply here.
• The applicant is domiciled outside Gujarat.
• The applicant has no verifiable competition record from a recognised federation. Club-level or unaffiliated tournament results are not enough.
• The applicant already draws the central pension for meritorious sportspersons and the state treats the two as non-combinable.

What documents will be asked for?

Keep originals and self-attested copies of every certificate. Federation certificates from decades ago are often the hardest item to reconstruct, so approach the state association for a duplicate early rather than at the last moment.

How to apply for the retired sportsperson pension

1. Call the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department on 079-23251374 and ask for the current status of the Retired Sportsperson Pension Scheme, the sanctioned rate, and the prescribed application form. This step is first for a reason: the scheme's parameters are not published, and applying on assumptions wastes months.
2. Assemble the achievement record. Obtain result certificates for each qualifying performance from the recognised state or national federation, along with a domicile certificate and proof of age.
3. Fill the prescribed form with your competition history in chronological order, the date you ceased active competition, and your bank details.
4. Submit the application to the Sports Authority of Gujarat or your District Sports Officer, and collect a dated acknowledgement with an inward number.
5. Follow up on the inward number at the district sports office, and respond in writing to any verification query within the time allowed.

How the central pension scheme compares

A retired Gujarat athlete who won a medal at the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Paralympic Games or a World Cup or World Championship in an Olympic or Asian Games discipline should also look at the Government of India's Scheme of Sports Fund for Pension to Meritorious Sportspersons, which has run since 1994. Under that scheme the pension becomes payable on attaining the age of 30 or on retirement from active sport, whichever is later, and continues for life. About 627 sportspersons currently draw between Rs 12,000 and Rs 20,000 a month under it, and the scheme allows only one pension per person, corresponding to the highest sporting achievement. Applications go through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports rather than the state.

For most retired Gujarat athletes, that central scheme is the better documented route, and the state scheme is worth pursuing in parallel only after the department confirms its current terms.
