What is the Trekking in Forest Area scheme?

Trekking in Forest Area is an activity of the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, Government of Gujarat, run through the department's youth services network at district level. The version described here is funded under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan, which is why the scheme appears in state listings specifically for Scheduled Castes.

The scheme organises supervised treks through forest areas for young people, with the state bearing the cost. Gujarat has substantial forest terrain in the Dangs, the Satpuda belt, the Girnar range, Gir and the Aravalli foothills, and an organised trek gives a young person from a town or a village their first structured outdoor experience: walking a planned route with guides, camping overnight, learning basic outdoor discipline, and seeing forest and wildlife habitat at close range.

The reason a youth department runs treks at all is not tourism. Organised trekking is used across Indian youth programmes as a low-cost way to build physical stamina, group discipline, self-reliance and leadership in a setting that classroom activity cannot reproduce. Participants generally receive a participation certificate at the end.

No cash is paid under this scheme. The benefit is the organised trek itself. Anyone claiming that this "yojana" pays money into an account is running a scam.

What does the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan funding mean?

Gujarat earmarks a defined share of state expenditure for Scheduled Castes under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan, and a parallel share for tribal areas under the Tribal Area Sub Plan. Departments therefore run the same activity under more than one budget head, with the beneficiary group defined by the head. Gujarat's own departmental scheme lists show this pattern plainly, the Commissioner of Fisheries, for example, lists the same inland fisheries activity separately for non-tribal areas, for tribal areas, and as "Assistance to Scheduled Castes for Fisheries", each with its own budget code.

The practical meaning here: the trek under this head is run for Scheduled Caste youth, and a valid Gujarat Scheduled Caste certificate is the gate.

Who is eligible to join a forest area trek?

You can join if:

• You belong to a Scheduled Caste and hold a valid caste certificate from a competent revenue authority in Gujarat.
• You are a resident of Gujarat.
• You are within the age band announced for that particular trek.
• You are medically fit for sustained walking over forest terrain, with a fitness certificate where the organiser requires one.
• You have guardian consent, if you are a minor.

You are not eligible / cannot apply if:

• You do not hold a Gujarat Scheduled Caste certificate. A trek funded under the Scheduled Caste Sub Plan head cannot enrol participants outside that category. The department runs comparable treks under other budget heads, so ask your district youth office what is running in your area.
• You are domiciled outside Gujarat.
• You are outside the announced age band.
• You cannot obtain medical fitness clearance. This is not bureaucratic caution — a participant who cannot complete the route creates a genuine safety problem in forest terrain.
• The batch is already full. Treks run with a fixed group size for safety and for forest-department permissions, and additional names are not added to a closed batch.

How to apply for Trekking in Forest Area

There is no permanent online form for this scheme. Treks are announced locally, on a seasonal calendar, and enrolment happens through the district network. Follow these steps:

1. Contact your district youth services office under the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department and ask when the next Trekking in Forest Area programme is scheduled. This office holds the calendar and the batch lists.
2. Ask your school, college or registered youth club. Institutions already on the department's list nominate participants directly, and for a student this is usually the quickest route.
3. Get your caste certificate and medical fitness certificate ready in advance. These are the two documents that hold up enrolment most often. A caste certificate from the revenue authority takes time; do not start it after the trek is announced.
4. Submit your enrolment with the full document set, Scheduled Caste certificate, Aadhaar, date of birth proof, Gujarat residence proof, medical fitness certificate, photographs and guardian consent if you are a minor.
5. Confirm the trek dates, reporting point, route and kit list, and arrange the personal items the organiser asks you to bring, such as suitable footwear and a water bottle.
6. Complete the trek and collect your participation certificate.

Why enrolment gets refused

• Caste certificate missing, expired or from another state.
• Medical fitness not cleared, or no certificate produced.
• Age outside the announced band for that batch.
• Batch full, in which case ask to be listed for the next one rather than reapplying from scratch.
• Guardian consent missing for a minor participant.
