What is the Karnataka Udyogini Scheme?

Udyogini is a self-employment scheme of the Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation (KSWDC), which works under the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Karnataka. The scheme's stated purpose is to financially assist women who are willing to become self-employed, by combining a bank loan with a government capital subsidy so that a woman can set up a small business she could not otherwise fund.

According to the Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation, Udyogini supports a business unit costing between Rs 1.00 lakh and Rs 3.00 lakh. The bank lends against that unit cost, and the corporation releases a subsidy of 30 per cent of the unit cost for General and Special category women and 50 per cent for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe women. The woman repays only the remaining portion.

Udyogini is often written in Kannada as Udyogini Yojane, and readers also search for it as the Karnataka women's business loan scheme. It should not be confused with schemes of the same generic name run by banks or by other states.

What Udyogini is designed to do

  • Move women in low-income households from wage work into owning a small unit.
  • Reduce the collateral and margin-money barrier that keeps women out of formal bank credit.
  • Bring the borrower into a bank relationship, so that a second, larger loan becomes possible once the first is repaid.
  • Pair money with a short entrepreneurship training so the unit survives its first year.

Who is eligible for the Karnataka Udyogini Scheme?

You can be considered if:

  • You are a woman and a permanent resident of Karnataka.
  • You are between 18 and 55 years of age.
  • Your annual family income is below Rs 1.50 lakh if you belong to the General or Special category, or below Rs 2.00 lakh if you belong to a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe.
  • You are a widow or a woman with a disability, in which case the income ceiling does not apply to you at all.
  • You propose a business activity whose total unit cost falls between Rs 1.00 lakh and Rs 3.00 lakh, drawn from the corporation's notified list of activities.
  • You hold an Aadhaar card and a bank account, and the account is Aadhaar-seeded.

You cannot apply if:

  • You are male: Udyogini is a women-only scheme of KSWDC.
  • You are under 18 or over 55 years old on the date of application.
  • You are not a permanent resident of Karnataka.
  • Your family income exceeds the ceiling for your category and you are not covered by the widow or disability exemption.
  • Your proposed unit costs less than Rs 1 lakh or more than Rs 3 lakh, or the activity is outside the notified list.

Being eligible is not the same as being sanctioned. Udyogini runs against a district-wise physical target each financial year, so the district office selects from the applications received. A strong, costed project report and a clean bank record are what separate a selected file from a waitlisted one.

What documents are required for Udyogini?

Document Mandatory Notes
Aadhaar card Yes Aadhaar seeding of the bank account is mandatory
Residence proof (voter ID or ration card) Yes Establishes permanent residence in Karnataka
Income certificate from the Tahsildar Yes Tests the Rs 1.50 lakh / Rs 2.00 lakh ceiling
Caste certificate from the Tahsildar Only for SC/ST Needed for the 50 per cent subsidy
Project report with quotations Yes Must show unit cost between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 3 lakh
Bank account passbook Yes Loan release and subsidy adjustment happen here
Age proof Yes To establish the 18–55 range
Passport-size photographs Yes For the application and the bank's forms

Widowed applicants should carry the husband's death certificate, and applicants claiming the disability exemption should carry a UDID card or a district disability certificate, because those are the documents that switch off the income test.

How to apply for the Karnataka Udyogini Scheme

  1. Visit the district office of the Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation in your district and ask for the Udyogini application form. There is no fee for the form.
  2. Decide your activity and prepare a project report. Write down the machinery, raw material and working capital you need, attach dealer quotations, and make sure the total lands between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 3 lakh.
  3. Collect your certificates. Obtain the income certificate, and the caste certificate if you are claiming the SC or ST subsidy — from the Tahsildar's office or the Atalji Janasnehi Kendra (Nadakacheri) in your taluk.
  4. Submit the completed form with the Aadhaar card, residence proof, age proof, bank passbook copy, photographs and the project report at the district KSWDC office, and keep the acknowledgement.
  5. Attend the verification and selection stage. The corporation's district staff verify your documents and your proposed activity, and the district-level selection committee approves cases against that year's target.
  6. Complete the bank formalities. Your approved file is forwarded to a bank branch, which does its own appraisal and sanctions the loan.
  7. Attend the Entrepreneurship Development Programme, usually three to six days, arranged for selected beneficiaries.
  8. Start the unit and repay on schedule. The subsidy is adjusted against your loan account by the corporation; you repay only the balance to the bank.

There is no citizen-facing online application form for Udyogini. Treat any website that offers to "register you for Udyogini online" for a fee as unofficial, the government does not charge for the application.

How much does Udyogini actually give?

The number that matters is the unit cost, not a fixed cash payment.

  • If your project report is accepted at Rs 3,00,000 and you are a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe applicant, the subsidy at 50 per cent is Rs 1,50,000.
  • On the same Rs 3,00,000 unit as a General or Special category applicant, the subsidy at 30 per cent is Rs 90,000.
  • On a smaller Rs 1,00,000 unit, the same percentages give Rs 50,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively.

The subsidy is a back-end capital subsidy adjusted in the loan account, so it is not handed over as spending money. The bank fixes the interest rate, the repayment period and the moratorium under its own norms.

Why Udyogini applications get rejected

  • Income certificate above the ceiling. The single most common reason. Get a fresh certificate rather than an old one, and remember that the ceiling is family income, not personal income.
  • Activity not on the notified list, or a project report with no quotations and no working-capital estimate.
  • Unit cost below Rs 1 lakh, which pushes the case out of Udyogini and into a different, smaller product.
  • Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, which blocks release even after sanction.
  • Existing overdue loan at the branch, since the bank's own appraisal is a separate gate after the corporation's selection.
  • Name mismatch between the Aadhaar card, the bank passbook and the caste or income certificate.

Most rejections are fixable. Correct the document, and re-apply in the next round rather than assuming the door is shut permanently.

Where to complain or follow up

Follow-up on an Udyogini application is done at the district office of the Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation that received your file, and the corporation's head office in Bengaluru is the next level. Scheme details and the current contact list are published on the KSWDC portal at kswdc.karnataka.gov.in. If the delay is at the bank rather than the corporation, raise it first with the branch manager and then with the bank's own grievance channel, since loan sanction is the bank's decision and not the corporation's.

No agent, middleman or private consultant can get your name added to the Udyogini list, and no official will ask you for an OTP or a payment to process the file.

How to check your Udyogini application status

Udyogini has no citizen-facing online tracking portal, so status checking is a manual, two-track process: one track at the KSWDC district office, and a separate track at the bank once your file has been forwarded there.

  1. Keep your acknowledgement number. When you submit the form at the district office of the Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation, you are given a receipt or a diary number. Quote this exact number every time you follow up, it is the only reference the office has to locate your file.
  2. Call or visit the district KSWDC office first. The district office is the body that receives, verifies and forwards applications, so it is the first place that can tell you whether your file is still under document verification, has been placed before the district-level selection committee, has been approved and sent to a bank, or has been rejected.
  3. Ask specifically which stage the file is at. Because Udyogini runs against a yearly district target, an application can sit at "under consideration" for weeks without anything being wrong with it. Ask the official whether your case has been included in the current selection list or is on a waiting list for the next round.
  4. If the file has moved to a bank, switch to the bank branch for status. Once KSWDC forwards an approved case, the loan appraisal, sanction and disbursal timeline are the bank's decision, not the corporation's. The district office cannot tell you the bank's internal status, so you need to ask the branch directly, quoting the same file or reference number the corporation used when forwarding it.
  5. Use the KSWDC portal only for general information, not file-specific status. The portal at kswdc.karnataka.gov.in publishes scheme details and office contacts, but it does not have an applicant login or a track-your- application feature for Udyogini.
  6. Escalate to the KSWDC head office in Bengaluru if the district office is unresponsive. Carry your acknowledgement number, a copy of the submitted form, and the date of submission when you escalate, since the head office will ask the district office to report on the specific file.

Because there is no SMS or portal notification either, a rejected or waitlisted application is often communicated only when you visit or call rather than sent to you proactively, so plan to follow up in person every few weeks during the selection period rather than waiting for the office to reach out.

Frequently asked questions

How much loan can a woman get under the Karnataka Udyogini Scheme?

Udyogini covers a business unit costing between Rs 1,00,000 and Rs 3,00,000, financed as a bank loan. The Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation then pays a subsidy on that unit cost — 30 per cent for General and Special category women and 50 per cent for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe women — and the woman repays only the balance to the bank.

What is the income limit for Udyogini in Karnataka?

Annual family income must be below Rs 1.50 lakh for General and Special category applicants and below Rs 2.00 lakh for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe applicants. Widowed and disabled women are exempted from the income ceiling.

What is the age limit for the Udyogini Scheme?

Udyogini is open to women between 18 and 55 years of age. A woman below 18 or above 55 on the date of application is not eligible, and there is no relaxation published for either end of the range.

Can men apply for the Udyogini Scheme?

No. Udyogini is run by the Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation exclusively for women, and a male applicant cannot apply either alone or as the main promoter of the unit.

Is the Udyogini application made online or at an office?

Udyogini applications are made offline at the district office of the Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation. You collect the form there, attach the documents, and the corporation forwards the selected case to a bank for loan sanction.

Is training compulsory under Udyogini?

Selected beneficiaries are put through a short Entrepreneurship Development Programme, commonly of three to six days, before or around the time the loan is released. The training covers costing, book-keeping and basic marketing for the chosen activity.

What kind of businesses are allowed under Udyogini?

Udyogini finances small trade, service and manufacturing activities from a notified list — tailoring, beauty parlours, dairy and milk products, food processing, petty shops and similar units are typical examples. The district KSWDC office holds the current notified list, and an activity outside that list will not be sanctioned.

Does the Udyogini subsidy mean I do not have to repay anything?

No. The subsidy reduces what you owe, it does not cancel the loan. If the unit costs Rs 3,00,000 and you are a General category applicant, the 30 per cent subsidy covers Rs 90,000 and you repay the remaining amount to the bank on the schedule it fixes.
