What is Sandhya Suraksha Yojane?

Sandhya Suraksha Yojane is a Karnataka state pension for poor elderly people who reach old age with no pension of any kind. The Government of Karnataka introduced it in 2007-08, and it is administered by the Directorate of Social Security and Pensions under the Revenue Department, with the Tahsildar of each taluk acting as the sanctioning authority.

The scheme is often written and searched as "Mukhyamantri Sandhya Suraksha Yojane", but its formal name in Karnataka government orders is simply Sandhya Suraksha Yojane. In Kannada it appears as ಸಂಧ್ಯಾ ಸುರಕ್ಷಾ ಯೋಜನೆ, and the phrase translates roughly to "protection in the evening of life".

Sandhya Suraksha Yojane sits alongside Karnataka's other social security pensions, the old-age pension, the widow pension, the disability pension and the Manaswini and Mythri pensions. The Seva Sindhu portal, which the state runs as its single citizen services window, lists "disbursement of old-age pensions, family pensions, widow pensions" among the social welfare services it delivers. What distinguishes Sandhya Suraksha is that it was designed for a specific group that other pensions missed: people who worked all their lives as small and marginal farmers, agricultural labourers, weavers, fishermen, artisans and other unorganised-sector workers, and therefore never accumulated a provident fund or a service pension.

Main features

  • A fixed monthly cash pension, credited directly to the beneficiary's bank account rather than paid in cash.
  • Age floor of 65 years, higher than the 60-year floor used for the ordinary old-age pension.
  • Strict income and asset ceilings, so the benefit reaches genuinely poor households.
  • No premium, no contribution and no age of exit — once sanctioned, the pension continues for life subject to annual verification.

Who is eligible for Sandhya Suraksha Yojane?

You can receive the pension if:

  • You are 65 years of age or above.
  • You are a permanent resident of Karnataka.
  • You worked as a small or marginal farmer, agricultural labourer, weaver, fisherman, artisan or other unorganised-sector worker, or are otherwise destitute.
  • The combined annual income of you and your spouse does not exceed Rs 20,000, the ceiling used in the scheme's operating instructions.
  • The combined bank and other deposits of you and your spouse are within the small ceiling prescribed, commonly stated as Rs 10,000.
  • You are not drawing any other pension from a public or private source.

You cannot apply or are not eligible if:

  • You are below 65 years of age. Applicants aged 60 to 64 should look at the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension route instead.
  • You already receive an old-age pension, destitute widow pension, disability pension, family pension, employees' pension or any pension from an employer.
  • Your household income or deposits exceed the ceilings in the government order.
  • You are not a resident of Karnataka, or cannot produce residence proof.
  • You are an income-tax payer or a retired government servant drawing retirement benefits.

The exclusion for other pensions is the one that catches most applicants. A person cannot hold Sandhya Suraksha and the state old-age pension at the same time; if both are found, one is cancelled and the excess is recovered.

How much does Sandhya Suraksha Yojane pay?

Sandhya Suraksha Yojane pays a fixed amount every month, not a lump sum and not a percentage of anything. The rate has been revised upward several times since 2007-08: the scheme began at a modest monthly figure and has since been increased in stages, with rates of Rs 1,000 and later Rs 1,200 a month reported after successive state revisions.

Because the rate is fixed by government order and changes with state budgets, treat any figure you see online with caution and confirm the current amount at your Nadakacheri or with the Directorate of Social Security and Pensions before you apply. What does not change is the payment mechanism: the money is credited directly to the beneficiary's own bank account, month by month, and there is no office where cash is handed over.

Beneficiaries have historically also been offered ancillary benefits such as concessional bus travel and health referrals through the social welfare machinery. These are administrative arrangements rather than guaranteed entitlements, so do not plan around them.

How to apply for Sandhya Suraksha Yojane

  1. Collect the Sandhya Suraksha application form from your taluk Nadakacheri, also known as an Atalji Janasnehi Kendra, or from the Grama One centre in your village.
  2. Fill in your name, age, address, occupation, spouse's details, income and bank account details exactly as they appear on your Aadhaar and passbook.
  3. Attach age proof, Aadhaar, residence proof, the income declaration, a bank passbook copy and the declaration that you draw no other pension.
  4. Submit the form at the Nadakacheri counter and collect the acknowledgement slip with the application number. Do not leave without it.
  5. Wait for field verification by the Village Accountant or Revenue Inspector, who confirms your age, income and that no other pension is being drawn.
  6. The Tahsildar sanctions or rejects the application. Once sanctioned, the pension begins crediting to your bank account.

You can also file the application online through Seva Sindhu at sevasindhu.karnataka.gov.in, which the state runs under the e-District Mission Mode Project as a single window for government services. Seva Sindhu generates a unique acknowledgement or token number for every service request, and that number is what you quote for follow-up.

How to check your application or payment status

  1. Open sevasindhu.karnataka.gov.in and use the application-status option with the acknowledgement or token number you were given.
  2. If you applied at the counter, take the acknowledgement slip back to the Nadakacheri and ask the operator to pull up the record.
  3. Once sanctioned, check the credit in your bank passbook each month; the pension arrives by direct transfer, so the passbook is the simplest proof.
  4. Karnataka also publishes pension records through the Directorate of Social Security and Pensions system, which the Nadakacheri staff can query for you.

Why Sandhya Suraksha applications get rejected

  • Age below 65 on the document used as age proof, even if the applicant says otherwise.
  • Another pension already being drawn by the applicant, which the verification picks up.
  • Income or deposits above the ceiling declared in the government order.
  • Bank account details wrong or account dormant, so the credit fails.
  • Aadhaar not seeded with the bank account, which stops direct transfer.
  • Field verification not completed because the applicant was not found at the address given.

The fix for most of these is the same: return to the Nadakacheri that received the application with the corrected document, and ask for the record to be updated rather than filing a fresh application, which restarts the queue.

Help and grievance redressal

  • Your taluk Nadakacheri / Atalji Janasnehi Kendra, which holds the file and is the first place to go for any pension problem.
  • The Tahsildar of the taluk, who is the sanctioning authority and can be petitioned in writing if a decision is delayed or disputed.
  • The Assistant Commissioner of the sub-division, and above that the Deputy Commissioner of the district, for appeals.
  • Seva Sindhu at sevasindhu.karnataka.gov.in, which carries a grievance and complaint registration facility for services filed through the portal.

Applying for Sandhya Suraksha Yojane costs nothing beyond a notified service charge at the counter. No middleman can get a pension sanctioned faster, and no government officer will ask you for money or for your Aadhaar OTP.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age for Sandhya Suraksha Yojane?

The minimum age is 65 years. Sandhya Suraksha Yojane was designed for elderly people above 65 who spent their working life as small and marginal farmers, agricultural labourers, weavers, fishermen or other unorganised workers, and who have no pension of their own.

Can I draw Sandhya Suraksha along with another pension?

No. A person already receiving an old-age pension, a destitute widow pension, a disability pension or any other pension from a public or private source is not eligible for Sandhya Suraksha Yojane. The scheme was created for people who fall outside every other pension.

How much pension does Sandhya Suraksha pay?

Sandhya Suraksha Yojane pays a fixed monthly pension that the Karnataka government has revised upward several times since the scheme started in 2007-08. Recent rates have been reported at Rs 1,000 and later Rs 1,200 a month. Confirm the current figure at your Nadakacheri or on the Directorate of Social Security and Pensions portal before applying.

Where do I apply for Sandhya Suraksha Yojane?

Apply at your taluk Nadakacheri, also called an Atalji Janasnehi Kendra, which is the counter Karnataka uses for social security pensions. The Seva Sindhu portal at sevasindhu.karnataka.gov.in also routes social welfare pension applications, and a Grama One centre can file it for you.

Is there any fee to apply?

No fee is charged for the pension itself. A Nadakacheri or Grama One centre may collect only the small government-notified service charge for filing an application. No agent can charge you for "getting the pension sanctioned".

Who sanctions the pension and how long does it take?

The Tahsildar of your taluk is the sanctioning authority, working under the Directorate of Social Security and Pensions in the Revenue Department. The application is verified by the Village Accountant or Revenue Inspector before sanction, so allow several weeks.

What happens if my pension stops coming?

The most frequent causes are a dormant or closed bank account, a failed Aadhaar seeding at the bank, a name mismatch, or a pending annual verification. Take your passbook and Aadhaar to the Nadakacheri that sanctioned the pension and ask for the record to be re-verified.
