What is the Puducherry State Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme?

Award of Puducherry State Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme is a scholarship of the Directorate of School Education, Union Territory of Puducherry. The department states its purpose directly: to make sure that no brilliant student is prevented on the grounds of poverty alone from pursuing an academic career.

Under the scheme, a scholarship is awarded to students studying in Class 11 and Class 12 who have secured promotion to the next higher class with 60% marks in Class 10 and 50% marks in Class 11 respectively.

Two things distinguish this scheme from the department's pre-matric scholarship. It is capped in number to 90 places for Class 11 and 90 for Class 12 each year, awarded competitively, and it is filed online through the e-District portal rather than through the school office. Both facts change how a family should approach it: the deadline is real, and the marks matter because places run out.

How much is the scholarship, and how many are given?

Number of slots

  • 90 scholarships for Class 11 every year.
  • 90 scholarships for Class 12 every year.

The department notes that this number may vary depending on the availability of funds in the budget of the year.

Rate of scholarship

Type of student Rate per month Rate per year
Day scholar Rs 60 Rs 600
Hosteller Rs 100 Rs 1,000

The scholarship is paid for ten months in an academic year. The amount is disbursed directly into the Aadhaar-seeded bank account of the applicant through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).

Who is eligible for the post-matric scholarship?

A student can apply if:

  • The student is a citizen of India.
  • The student is a native of the Union Territory of Puducherry by birth, or by continuous residence for not less than five years.
  • The student is studying in Class 11 or Class 12.
  • The student has secured promotion to the next higher class.
  • The family income does not exceed Rs 75,000 per annum.
  • For a Class 11 student, the student secured 60% marks in Class 10.
  • For a Class 12 student, the student secured 50% marks in Class 11.

Who is not eligible:

  • Students below 60% in Class 10 applying for a Class 11 scholarship, or below 50% in Class 11 applying for a Class 12 scholarship.
  • Families with annual income above Rs 75,000.
  • Students who have not secured promotion to the next higher class.
  • Students outside Classes 11 and 12. Classes 6 to 10 are served by the department's pre-matric scholarships instead.
  • Students in unrecognised private institutions. A private school is eligible only if it is recognised by the government.
  • Students who are neither native to Puducherry nor continuously resident there for five years or more.

How students are selected when there are more applicants than places

This is the part of the scheme families most often misunderstand. Meeting the eligibility conditions does not guarantee a scholarship, because the number of awards is fixed. Where proposals received exceed the required number, the Directorate selects the required number of beneficiaries:

  1. Strictly in the order of merit of marks in percentage, starting from the top.
  2. And in the order of preference of students from government schools first, then government-aided schools, and then private schools recognised by the government.

A student at 62% from a private school is therefore competing on worse terms than a student at 62% from a government school. That is the design, not an irregularity.

How to apply for the Puducherry State Post-Matric Scholarship

  1. Open the Puducherry e-District portal at edistrict.py.gov.in and click Login at the top right of the home page, then Register a New Membership.
  2. Complete the registration page; username, password, confirm password, and personal details including full name, first name, email address, address, current address, gender, date of birth and mobile number. Agree to the declaration, fill in the captcha code and click Signup.
  3. Log back in with your username and password and the captcha code.
  4. Choose the scheme. The next screen lists the Government of Puducherry schemes department-wise. Click the Post-Matric Scholarship scheme to open its online application form.
  5. Fill in every mandatory field, those marked with a red asterisk — and upload all mandatory documents, self-attested where required. Choose day scholar or hosteller correctly, since it decides the rate.
  6. Tick the declaration stating that the details given are true and correct to the best of your knowledge, and submit the application.
  7. Note the application number shown on submission. It is also sent to your registered mobile number and email ID, and it is what you track the application with.

How to check the status of your application

  1. Log in at edistrict.py.gov.in and use the Track Your Application facility with the application number issued on submission.
  2. If the application number did not arrive by SMS or email, check the registered mobile number and email on your profile, since a typo there is a common cause.
  3. Confirm with your bank that the account is Aadhaar-seeded. A sanctioned scholarship cannot reach an unseeded account.
  4. For departmental queries, the Directorate of School Education, Puducherry publishes its section contacts at schooledn.py.gov.in. The head of your institution can also take the matter up.

The department publishes a user manual for the online application on the portal, which is worth reading before starting rather than after a failed upload.

Why post-matric scholarship applications fail

  • Marks below the threshold: under 60% in Class 10 for a Class 11 applicant, or under 50% in Class 11 for a Class 12 applicant.
  • Merit rank below the cut-off. With 90 places per class, an eligible student can still miss out purely on the order of merit and the school-type preference.
  • Income certificate above Rs 75,000, or an expired income certificate.
  • Nativity certificate issued by an officer below Deputy Tahsildar rank.
  • Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, so the DBT credit fails.
  • Hosteller rate claimed without a hostel certificate, which is normally corrected down to the day scholar rate rather than rejected outright.
  • Application registered but not submitted before the portal window closed.
  • Uploads that are unreadable, particularly photographed mark sheets.

Help and grievance redressal

  • Puducherry e-District portal; edistrict.py.gov.in, for registration, submission, the user manual and application tracking.
  • Directorate of School Education, Puducherry; schooledn.py.gov.in, for departmental circulars and section contacts.
  • Head of your institution, for anything requiring school-level verification or a corrected record.

Applying is free. No agent can secure one of the 180 places, which are allotted strictly by merit and by the published order of school-type preference.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Puducherry State Post-Matric Scholarship?

A day scholar receives Rs 60 per month, which is Rs 600 a year, and a hosteller receives Rs 100 per month, which is Rs 1,000 a year. The scholarship is paid for ten months in an academic year.

How many scholarships are awarded each year?

Ninety scholarships are awarded for Class 11 and ninety for Class 12 every year, a total of 180. The number may vary depending on the availability of funds in the budget of the year.

What marks are needed?

A student entering Class 11 needs 60% marks in Class 10. A student in Class 12 needs 50% marks in Class 11. In both cases the student must also have secured promotion to the next higher class.

What is the income limit?

The family income of the applicant should not exceed Rs 75,000 per annum. This is the same ceiling applied to the department's pre-matric scholarship for OEBC students.

What happens if more students apply than there are scholarships?

The Directorate selects the required number strictly in the order of merit by percentage of marks, starting from the top. Where merit is equal, preference runs first to students from government schools, then from government-aided schools, and then from private schools recognised by the government.

Can a private school student apply?

Yes, provided the school is recognised by the government. Private school students are third in the order of preference after government and government-aided school students, so a place is harder to secure.

How is the scholarship paid?

The amount is disbursed directly into the Aadhaar-seeded bank account of the applicant through Direct Benefit Transfer and the Public Financial Management System.

Where do I apply?

Online, on the Puducherry e-District portal at edistrict.py.gov.in. A student registers a new membership, logs in, selects the scheme from the department-wise list, uploads the documents and submits the form.

How do I check my application status?

Log in at edistrict.py.gov.in and use the Track Your Application facility with the application number issued on submission, which is also sent by SMS and email. Confirm your bank account is Aadhaar-seeded, since a sanctioned scholarship cannot be credited to an unseeded account.
