AICTE Swanath Scholarship Scheme: Why Applications Get Rejected and How to Fix It

Why do AICTE Swanath Scholarship applications get rejected?

Swanath applications most often fail on avoidable paperwork: an income certificate that does not state the figure or is from an old year, a death certificate that does not name COVID-19 where the claim rests on it, an institution that never verified the form before the portal deadline, or a bank account not in the student's own name. AICTE Swanath Scholarship Scheme is applied for on the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in), verified first by the institution and then by AICTE, so a defective form is rejected even when the student is genuinely eligible. Every reason below has a fix, several of them through the portal's own correction window.

The main rejection reasons and how to fix each

1. Income certificate is defective

The certificate must be for the current year and must explicitly state that annual family income from all sources is below Rs 8,00,000. A certificate that omits the figure, or that carries an earlier year, is rejected.

Fix: Obtain a fresh current-year income certificate from the competent authority (Tehsildar/SDM as applicable in your state) that names the figure in words, and re-upload it in the defective-application correction window.

2. Category proof does not name the qualifying cause

For a COVID-19 claim, a general death certificate will not do; AICTE requires a death certificate that explicitly records COVID-19 as the cause of death. The same specificity applies to orphan, martyrdom and critical-illness claims.

Fix: Produce the exact certificate for your category: death certificates of both parents or a Tehsildar/SDM certificate for orphans; a COVID-19 death certificate; the martyrdom certificate for armed forces or paramilitary wards; or a medical certificate for a critically ill or 80%-disabled parent. A general document is the most common trap.

3. Institution did not verify before the deadline

Every application is treated as incomplete until the institution's nodal officer completes institute-level verification on the portal. A form the student submitted but the college never verified is rejected as unverified.

Fix: After you submit and note your application ID, chase the institution nodal officer directly, this is the single fastest route for a stuck application. Verification must be completed before the portal's institutional verification deadline.

4. Bank account is not in the student's own name or not Aadhaar-seeded

The scholarship is credited by DBT only to an Aadhaar-seeded account in the student's own name. A parent's account, or a student account without Aadhaar seeding, causes the credit to fail.

Fix: Open or use an account in the student's own name, seed it with Aadhaar at the bank branch, and enter those details exactly on the portal.

5. Another scholarship is already being drawn

Swanath cannot be stacked. A student already receiving any other Central Government, State Government or AICTE-sponsored scholarship is disqualified.

Fix: Hold only one scholarship. If you are receiving another, you must choose between them — Swanath cannot be added on top.

6. Course or institution is not AICTE-approved

Only full-time regular Degree or Diploma courses in AICTE-approved institutions qualify. Distance, part-time and online programmes, and courses outside AICTE's approval, are not eligible.

Fix: Confirm your course and institution are AICTE-approved before applying; if they are not, this is a genuine ineligibility rather than a fixable defect.

7. Course discontinued or no promotion at renewal

Renewal is not automatic. A student who discontinues the course, is not promoted to the next academic year, or misses the renewal window before the portal closes loses the scholarship.

Fix: Apply for renewal each year on scholarships.gov.in and ensure you are promoted to the next year of the course.

Selection is competitive; meeting the rules is not enough

Swanath is a capped scheme: only 2,000 awards exist (1,000 degree, 1,000 diploma), and selection is on merit, Class 12 marks for degree applicants and Class 10 marks for diploma applicants, with lower family income and then age as tie-breakers. A student who clears every eligibility condition may still not be selected in a given year. That is not a defect to correct; it is the cap. Apply again in the next cycle if you remain eligible.

The correction and grievance route

1. Use the defective-application correction window on scholarships.gov.in if the institution or AICTE returns your form for a fix.
2. Contact your institution's nodal officer for verification status. The fastest route for a stuck application.
3. Call the National Scholarship Portal helpdesk: 0120-6619540 for portal and technical issues.
4. Check the AICTE students' development schemes page at aicte.gov.in for the current year's guidelines and notified dates before relying on any deadline.
