Rejection vs defective: know which you are looking at

The portal distinguishes two outcomes. A Defective status means your form was returned for correction and can be resubmitted within the correction window. A Rejected status means the file was declined at verification or sanction. Always open the recorded remark first, the fix depends entirely on which state you are in and what the remark says. Never assume a reason the portal has not stated.

The common reasons and the fix for each

1. Institution not on the notified list. The scheme funds study only at institutions notified for that scheme year: IITs, IIMs, NITs, IIITs, AIIMS, National Law Universities, NIFTs, NIDs and others on the ministry's list. A place at a strong but unnotified college does not qualify. Fix: confirm your institution appears on the current-year notified list on socialjustice.gov.in before applying; if it is not listed, apply instead under the Post Matric Scholarship for OBC, EBC and DNT Students.

2. Stale or unclear income certificate. The income certificate must be current-year and state a figure not exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh clearly. Fix: obtain a fresh certificate from the competent authority for the current year and re-upload a clean scan.

3. Wrong category certificate. EBC and DNT applicants need the specific certificate for their category; a generic OBC certificate is not accepted by the verifying officer for those categories. Fix: get the correct EBC or DNT certificate in the central format from the competent state authority.

4. Institution verification not completed. A form left at Applied cannot be sanctioned; it must clear institute-level verification before the portal closes. Fix: follow up with your college's nodal officer well before the deadline — this is the single most preventable rejection.

5. Bank account problem. The account must be in the student's own name and Aadhaar-seeded, because all heads are paid by DBT. Fix: open or correct an account in your name and complete Aadhaar seeding at the branch.

6. Two siblings already benefiting. The scheme allows a maximum of two students per family; a third is not eligible. Fix: none, this is a scheme rule, not an error.

7. Aadhaar e-KYC or detail mismatch. e-KYC failure blocks the form from being released. Fix: ensure name and date of birth match your Aadhaar exactly and retry e-KYC.

How to correct a defective application

1. Log in to scholarships.gov.in with your application ID.
2. Open the application flagged Defective and read the exact remark.
3. Edit only the flagged field or replace only the flagged document.
4. Resubmit within the defective-application window shown on the dashboard.
5. Ask your nodal officer to re-verify once you resubmit.

If you believe the rejection is wrong

Can I reapply after a rejection? For the same year you can only correct a defective form within the window; a rejected file generally must wait for the next cycle unless the portal reopens it.
