Skill Development (Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology)
Uttarakhand state government scheme
Skill Development is a training scheme of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, that gives postgraduate and 4th or 5th year integrated postgraduate Earth Science students hands-on summer and winter training across disciplines such as geochemistry, sedimentology, tectonics and glaciology. Applications follow batch notices published on wihg.res.in.
What is the Skill Development scheme at the Wadia Institute?
Skill Development is a training scheme implemented by the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun. The scheme's purpose is to raise the practical knowledge and research capability of students studying Earth Science and allied subjects, by offering them specialised summer and winter training programmes inside a working national research institute.
WIHG is an autonomous institution of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, which came into being in 1968 and is located at 33 GMS Road, near Ballupur Chowk, Dehradun 248001. Its research focus is Himalayan mountain building, seismogenesis and geodynamic processes, and the training programme gives students access to that work. The programme is also referred to by its Hindi name, Kaushal Vikas.
The training is deliberately practical. The scheme description lists the disciplines covered as geochemistry, sedimentology, tectonics, geomorphology, environmental geoscience and palaeontology, and the benefits statement adds structural geology, glaciology and engineering geology. A student who has only studied these in a classroom gets to work on real Himalayan samples, instruments and datasets.
What does a trainee get?
According to the scheme description, the benefits are:
- Research experience: opportunities for self-sponsored research work that give students practical experience in Earth Sciences.
- Seasonal training: summer and winter training programmes that build practical skills in specialised geological disciplines.
- Exposure to diverse fields; contact with a wide range of Earth Science sub-disciplines, including structural geology, geochemistry, glaciology, engineering geology, palaeontology and environmental geology.
Note the phrase self-sponsored, which appears both in the scheme's own benefits text and in the Institute's batch notices. This is training provided in kind. No stipend is described, and a student should plan to meet travel, stay and living costs for the duration of the batch.
Who is eligible for the Skill Development training?
You are eligible if:
- You possess a postgraduate degree in any discipline of Geosciences, Earth Sciences or allied fields; or
- You are pursuing an integrated postgraduate course and are in the fourth or fifth year of the curriculum.
- Your field falls within geophysics, geochemistry, structural geology, sedimentology, palaeontology, environmental geoscience or a related discipline.
You are not eligible if:
- You are from a discipline outside Geosciences, Earth Sciences and allied fields.
- You are an integrated postgraduate student in the first, second or third year, the scheme sets the entry point at the fourth year.
- You are an undergraduate or a school student. There is no entry route for either.
- You are looking for a paid job, apprenticeship wage or stipend. This is a self-sponsored training programme, not employment, and it does not carry a salary.
What documents are needed?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Application form for the announced batch | Yes | Downloaded from wihg.res.in |
| PG degree certificate or current marksheets | Yes | Geosciences, Earth Sciences or allied field |
| Bonafide certificate | Yes | For integrated PG students, showing 4th or 5th year |
| Recommendation from head of department or supervisor | No | Commonly asked, check the batch notice |
| Identity proof | No | Government photo ID, used at joining |
Each batch notice is a separate PDF with its own document checklist, so read the notice for the batch you are applying to rather than relying on a general list.
How to apply for the Skill Development programme
- Visit the official website of WIHG at wihg.res.in.
- Look for announcements or notifications regarding the Kaushal Vikas (Skill Development) programme, or the dissertation work / internship programme page, which is where the Institute posts batch notices.
- Download the application form or open the online registration link given in the notice.
- Fill the form with all required personal, academic and institutional details.
- Upload or attach the required documents as specified in that batch's guidelines.
- Submit the application as the notice instructs, before the last date printed on it.
When do the batches run?
The Institute does not publish a single annual deadline. It announces individual batches through the year, and each announcement carries its own window. The dissertation and internship programme page has carried notices for multiple batches across 2025 and 2026, with the seventh batch posted in July 2026. Training is described in the scheme as summer and winter programmes, so the two peak intake periods sit around the summer and winter academic breaks.
The practical implication for a student is simple: this is a scheme you have to watch for, not one you can apply to on a fixed date. Check the WIHG student programmes page every few weeks during the term before the break you want to train in.
How does this relate to the other WIHG and AcSIR routes?
WIHG hosts more than one student route, and they are frequently confused:
- Skill Development / Kaushal Vikas — short, self-sponsored summer or winter training for postgraduate and 4th–5th year integrated postgraduate students. This page.
- Dissertation work / internship programme, the self-sponsored route through which a student completes a dissertation project at the Institute; batch notices for this and for skill development appear on the same page.
- Student Program Under AcSIR, the full PhD route, which requires a postgraduate degree and a valid national fellowship such as UGC or CSIR NET-JRF or INSPIRE, and is applied for on the AcSIR portal at acsiriphd.emli.in, not on the WIHG site.
A student who has just finished an M.Sc. and holds NET-JRF should be applying to the AcSIR route. A student still in the fourth year of an integrated M.Sc. should be applying here.
Why applications get rejected
- Wrong academic stage, integrated postgraduate students below the fourth year do not qualify.
- Discipline outside Earth Sciences and allied fields.
- Applied outside the batch window printed on the notice.
- Incomplete document set for that specific batch.
- No bonafide certificate from the parent institution, where the applicant is still a student.
- Confusing this scheme with the AcSIR PhD route and submitting the wrong form to the wrong body.

What this guide could not verify
Three details are left open on purpose. Batch dates and last dates vary per notice, so none are stated as if permanent. Seat numbers are not published on the programme's landing page and appear only inside individual batch PDFs. Fees are not stated: the programme is described as self-sponsored in both the scheme text and the Institute's notices, but the exact charge, if any, is set in each batch notice and should be read there before applying.
