How to Apply for a Farmer ID under the Digital Agriculture Mission: Step-by-Step Guide

This is a supporting guide for Digital Agriculture Mission. See the main guide for full eligibility, benefits and documents.

What you are actually applying for

Under the Digital Agriculture Mission, the only thing an individual farmer applies for is a free Aadhaar-linked Farmer ID (Kisan Pehchaan Patra), there is no cash benefit, grant or subsidy to apply for. This guide is a granular, field-by-field walkthrough of the two routes to that ID: the village camp and online self-registration on your state's farmer registry portal. It goes deeper than the pillar's summary steps. For what the mission is, its outlay and why the ID matters, see the Digital Agriculture Mission pillar. Registration is free and there is no central form, each participating state runs its own portal because AgriStack is federated.

Before you start: the four things to have ready

  1. Aadhaar card, the Farmer ID is an Aadhaar-linked identity, so this is unavoidable.
  2. A mobile phone with the Aadhaar-linked number; registration is verified by an OTP sent to that number. If your Aadhaar is not linked to your current mobile, update it at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra first, or the whole process stops at OTP.
  3. Your land record; khasra/khatauni or the state equivalent, recorded in your name. If the land is still in a parent's or previous owner's name, complete mutation at the revenue office first.
  4. Confirmation your state has launched enrolment — 19 states had signed MoUs and begun enrolment as of April 2026. If yours has not started, no route works yet.

A bank passbook is not needed to create the ID, though you will need one later for the DBT schemes the ID unlocks.

Route A: Village camp (usually fastest)

The Ministry of Agriculture has advised states to run camp-mode registration in villages, which is the recommended route because a trained operator and a verifying official are on site.

  1. Find the camp date for your village or gram panchayat through the village or block agriculture office.
  2. Carry your Aadhaar card, your Aadhaar-linked phone, and a copy of your land record.
  3. At the camp, the operator enters your Aadhaar number and triggers the OTP to your phone; read it to the operator (this is the one authorised context: never share an OTP over a phone call).
  4. The operator fetches your village land records and shows the parcels against your name. Check every khasra/survey number before confirming. This is the step most errors creep in at.
  5. You record consent for your identity and land data to be used in scheme delivery.
  6. The on-site revenue or agriculture official verifies and approves, and your Farmer ID generates. Collect the printed ID or the ID number before you leave.

Route B: Online self-registration

If you prefer to register yourself:

  1. Open your state's farmer registry portal. There is no single national URL; every participating state runs its own under AgriStack. Confirm the correct portal through agriwelfare.gov.in or your state agriculture department, not a random search result, to avoid fake sites.
  2. Choose Farmer self-registration / create Farmer ID.
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number and verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  4. The portal fetches land records for your village. Select your land parcels and confirm the khasra or survey numbers shown against your name are correct; deselect any that are not yours and note any missing parcel for later correction.
  5. Fill any remaining profile fields the state portal asks for (category, contact details), keeping them consistent with your Aadhaar and land record to avoid a verification mismatch.
  6. Record your consent for data use and submit.
  7. Wait for verification by the revenue or agriculture official of your village. This is a queue, not an instant approval. A pending state is normal.
  8. Once approved, download or print the Farmer ID from the portal and save the ID number. You will quote it when applying for PM-KISAN, crop insurance, KCC and MSP procurement.

After you get the ID

  • Store the Farmer ID number somewhere retrievable; it becomes your key across agricultural schemes.
  • If a parcel is wrong or missing, raise it at the village or block agriculture office, then the District Agriculture Officer for escalation.
  • Do not pay anyone. No agent or Common Service Centre operator is authorised to charge for Farmer Registry enrolment, and no official will ask for your Aadhaar OTP over the phone.

FAQ

How long does approval take? It depends on how quickly the village revenue/agriculture official verifies your entry; camps often verify on the spot, online submissions queue for official approval.

Can I register without land in my name? No. The Farmer ID is land-linked, so the land must be recorded against you; complete mutation first if it is not.

Is the ID different from Aadhaar? Yes. Aadhaar is your national identity; the Farmer ID is a separate, land-linked agricultural identity built on top of Aadhaar verification.
