EPS Pension Withdrawal (Form 10C, Employees' Pension Scheme 1995)
EPS pension withdrawal is the EPFO process for claiming the Employees' Pension Scheme 1995 balance using Form 10C. Members who leave employment before completing 10 years of service can take a withdrawal benefit or a Scheme Certificate; those with 10 years or more get a monthly pension under Form 10D instead. Online claims typically settle in about 20 days.

What is EPS pension withdrawal?
The Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995 (EPS-95) is the pension arm of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour & Employment. Every month, part of the employer's provident fund contribution, 8.33% of wages up to the statutory wage ceiling, goes into EPS rather than into the provident fund itself. This is why an EPF member has two distinct pots of money, and why leaving a job involves two separate claims.
EPS pension withdrawal is the process of claiming that pension pot as a lump sum using Form 10C, or of preserving it for the future by taking a Scheme Certificate on the same form. Form 10C is titled, in EPFO's own words, the form "for claiming withdrawal benefit / scheme certificate".
The single fact that determines everything is your length of eligible service. Under ten years, you may take the money out. At ten years or more, you may not: the entitlement has hardened into a lifelong monthly pension, claimed later through Form 10D, and Form 10C can then only produce a Scheme Certificate.
Who is eligible for EPS withdrawal?
EPFO's official Form 10C instructions set out exactly who may apply.
You can apply if:
- You are a member of the Employees' Pension Scheme 1995 (or the earlier Employees' Family Pension Scheme 1971) and you left employment before completing 10 years of service.
- You have attained the age of 58 before completing 10 years of service, whether you are still in service or have left.
- You completed 10 years of service on the date of leaving and have not attained 50 on the date of applying, in which case a Scheme Certificate only is issued.
- You are 50 or above but under 58 and not willing to take a reduced pension, again a Scheme Certificate only. EPFO notes that if you do want the reduced early pension, you apply through Form 10D instead.
- You are the family member, nominee or legal heir of a deceased member who died after 58 but had not completed 10 years of eligible service.
You cannot apply, or are not eligible for a lump sum, if:
- You have 10 years or more of eligible service and want cash. EPFO's instructions are explicit that in the case of more than ten years of service the member has no option and only a Scheme Certificate can be issued. The lump sum route is closed permanently.
- You are still in service and under 58. Form 10C is a post-exit claim.
- You were never an EPS member, for example because you joined EPF for the first time above the statutory wage ceiling and were excluded from the pension scheme.
- You are claiming a monthly pension. That is Form 10D, not Form 10C.
A separate route exists for a member who left service because of total and permanent disablement: EPFO's instructions say such a member is eligible for a monthly disablement pension irrespective of age and period of service, and should apply through Form 10D.
An important note in EPFO's instructions: to determine the ten-year period, service rendered between 1 March 1971 and 15 November 1995, if any, is also counted.
Withdrawal benefit or Scheme Certificate: which should you choose?
This is the real decision on Form 10C, and EPFO takes a side. Its instructions say that a member eligible for the withdrawal benefit is advised to opt for the Scheme Certificate, and give three reasons:
- Service carries forward. On taking up employment in another establishment, the earlier service period is carried forward and the two spells are clubbed together when pension entitlement is worked out. This is how people reach the ten-year mark across multiple employers.
- Family pension protection. If the member does not take up employment again and dies before 58, the family gets family pension. On survival, the withdrawal benefit is still available later with weightage as prescribed.
- No lock on your PF. EPFO states plainly that while availing a Scheme Certificate there is no bar on withdrawing the provident fund accumulations. You can take your PF and still keep your pension service alive.
The counter-argument is simple: the withdrawal benefit is money now. If you are leaving formal employment for good, or the amount is small and your total service short, taking it is reasonable. If there is any realistic chance of returning to a covered job, the Scheme Certificate is almost always the better call.
How much is the EPS withdrawal benefit?
The amount is not the figure you see in your passbook. It is computed under Table D of the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995, from your completed months of contributory service and the wages on which EPS contribution was received.
The Government of India amended the scheme in 2024 in two ways that matter. First, members with less than six months of contributory service were made entitled to a withdrawal benefit; previously only six months and above qualified, and about 7 lakh claims a year were being rejected on that ground alone. Second, Table D was modified so that every completed month of service is counted, rather than only completed years with the fractional period ignored. The Ministry's press brief illustrates the effect: a member with 2 years and 5 months of contributory service at wages of Rs 15,000 per month, earlier entitled to Rs 29,850, would receive Rs 36,000 under the revised table. Members who had not attained 58 years as on 14 June 2024 became entitled to the benefit under the amendment.
Because Table D is a statutory table, do not accept a figure from a calculator on a private website as final. The settled amount credited by EPFO is the authoritative one.

How to apply for EPS withdrawal online
- Log in to the EPFO Member Interface at unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface with your activated UAN and password.
- Open Manage → KYC and confirm that your Aadhaar and bank account show as verified and approved. An online claim is not permitted otherwise.
- Check under Manage → Mark Exit that your date of exit from the establishment is recorded. If the employer has not entered it, mark it yourself.
- Go to Online Services → Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C & 10D).
- Enter the last four digits of your bank account and click Verify, then accept the certificate of undertaking.
- Select Proceed for Online Claim, then choose Only Pension Withdrawal (Form 10C). Most members leaving before ten years file this together with Form 19 for the provident fund.
- Choose withdrawal benefit or Scheme Certificate as your option, and fill in the address and bank details requested.
- Upload the scanned cheque or passbook page, submit, and authenticate with the Aadhaar OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Save the claim reference number from the acknowledgement screen.
How to apply offline
The paper route remains open where the online one is blocked, typically for closed establishments, unapproved KYC or claims by a nominee.
- Download Form 10C from the Downloads section of epfindia.gov.in.
- Fill it in capital letters as per your establishment's service records, without overwriting. EPFO requires any correction to be attested.
- Complete the option field carefully. EPFO's instruction is that the option is to be given only if you have not rendered ten years of service; with more than ten years, only the Scheme Certificate box applies.
- Attach a blank or cancelled cheque, and the additional documents listed above if you are seeking a Scheme Certificate or claiming after a death.
- Get it attested. The application should be submitted through the employer under whom you were last employed, and all pages signed by both claimant and employer. Where the establishment has closed and no authorised signatory is available, EPFO accepts attestation over official seal by a magistrate, gazetted officer, post or sub-post master, president of a village union or panchayat, chairman or secretary or member of a municipal or district local board, an MP or MLA, a member of EPFO's Central Board of Trustees or a Regional Committee, the manager of the bank where your savings account is held, or the head of a recognised educational institution.
- Submit it to the regional EPF office holding your account and keep the acknowledgement.
How to check your claim status
- Log in to the Member Interface and open Online Services → Track Claim Status.
- Look for the Form 10C claim against your reference number and read the status: Under Process, Settled, Rejected or Returned.
- Once settled, the screen shows the payment reference and the date of transfer.
- The UMANG app shows the same status, and a missed call to 9966044425 from your registered mobile returns your latest account details by SMS.
How long does it take?
An online Form 10C claim with clean, employer-approved KYC is commonly settled within about twenty days, and EPFO has been driving that number down. A Scheme Certificate takes longer than a cash settlement because it is a document generated and dispatched by the regional office rather than a bank transfer. Offline claims, and any claim involving a closed establishment, a name correction or a death, run considerably longer.
Why EPS claims get rejected, and how to fix them
- Filing Form 10C with ten or more years of service. Rejected by rule. Apply for the Scheme Certificate, or Form 10D if you are 50 or over and want the reduced early pension.
- Filing while still in service, or with no date of exit marked. Record the exit first under Manage → Mark Exit.
- Name or date of birth mismatch between Aadhaar and the EPFO record. Correct it through Manage → Modify Basic Details, which routes a joint request through your employer.
- Bank KYC not digitally approved by the employer. Only the employer can approve it with a Digital Signature Certificate.
- Broken service history. If an earlier account was never transferred, your eligible service looks shorter than it really is, which can wrongly push you into or out of the ten-year band. File Form 13 to transfer old accounts before claiming.
- Cheque image unreadable. EPFO requires the account number and IFS code to be clearly visible; a blurred upload is a common return reason.
- Wrong option selected on the form, withdrawal benefit where only a Scheme Certificate is permissible. Refile with the correct option.
There is no penalty for a rejected claim and no limit on refiling. The rejection reason appears in Track Claim Status; fix the underlying record and file again.
Is there any fee?
No. Filing Form 10C, online or on paper, is free. EPFO charges nothing for settling an EPS claim or for issuing a Scheme Certificate. Middlemen who promise to "get your pension money released quickly" for a share of the amount are selling a free government service, and they cannot make EPFO move faster. Never share your UAN password or any OTP; EPFO states on its own homepage that neither the organisation nor its staff ask for such details over messages, calls, WhatsApp or social media.
Grievance and helpline
- EPFO toll-free helpline: 14470
- Missed call service: 9966044425 from your registered mobile number
- EPFiGMS, EPFO's grievance management system, for written complaints, also available through the UMANG platform
- UMANG app for claim filing and tracking
If a Form 10C claim has been pending well past the normal window, or has been rejected for a reason you believe is incorrect, lodge a grievance on EPFiGMS quoting your UAN and claim reference number. The complaint is routed to the regional office holding your account, and you can track it to closure.

Frequently asked questions
Who can claim EPS withdrawal using Form 10C?
According to EPFO's official Form 10C instructions, a member who has left employment before completing 10 years of service, or who has attained 58 years before completing 10 years of service, can apply. Members who have completed 10 years and are under 50, or who are between 50 and 58 and do not want a reduced pension, can apply for a Scheme Certificate only.
Can I withdraw my EPS amount after 10 years of service?
No. EPFO's Form 10C instructions state that a member with more than 10 years of service has no option and only a Scheme Certificate can be issued. Ten years of eligible service converts your EPS entitlement into a lifelong monthly pension, claimed later through Form 10D, and the lump sum route closes.
What is a Scheme Certificate and should I take one?
A Scheme Certificate records your pensionable service so it can be carried forward instead of cashed out. EPFO's own instructions advise members eligible for withdrawal benefit to opt for the Scheme Certificate, because on rejoining another establishment the earlier service is added to the new spell, and if the member dies before 58 the family gets family pension.
Is there a minimum service period for the EPS withdrawal benefit?
Not any more for very short spells. The Government of India amended the Employees' Pension Scheme 1995 in 2024 so that members with less than six months of contributory service also receive a withdrawal benefit, and modified Table D so that every completed month of service counts. Earlier, only six months and above qualified.
Is Form 10C the same as Form 19?
No. Form 19 settles the provident fund corpus and Form 10C claims the pension (EPS) component, which is a separate fund built from the employer's 8.33% share. They are filed on the same screen of the Member Interface and most members leaving a job before 10 years file both together.
How is the EPS withdrawal amount calculated?
The amount is calculated under Table D of the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995, using your completed months of contributory service and the wages on which EPS contribution was received. It is not simply the balance shown in your passbook. Following the 2024 amendment, service is counted in completed months rather than completed years.
Can I withdraw EPS while still working?
No. Form 10C applies to a member who has left employment, or who has crossed 58 without completing 10 years of service. A serving employee cannot draw the EPS balance, and there is no partial-advance facility for the pension component the way Form 31 works for provident fund.
Is there any fee to claim EPS withdrawal?
No. Filing Form 10C online on the EPFO Member Interface is free, and so is submitting the paper form at a regional EPF office. Agents who offer to "release your pension amount" for a commission provide nothing you cannot do yourself, and EPFO warns that it never asks for personal details or OTPs over calls, messages or social media.
What happens if I die before claiming EPS?
The family, nominee or legal heir can claim. EPFO's instructions cover the case of a member who died after attaining 58 but before completing 10 years of eligible service, where the withdrawal benefit goes to the family, nominee or legal heir. A death certificate is required, and a succession certificate where a legal heir rather than a registered nominee applies.
