Popular Tiatr Competition
Goa state government scheme
Popular Tiatr Competition is the Tiatr Academy of Goa's flagship annual contest for traditional Konkani tiatr, with a first prize of Rs 2,00,000 and more than 30 individual award categories from Rs 2,000 upwards. Troupes need 5 prior shows in eight named auditoriums and apply offline at Campal, Panaji.
What is the Popular Tiatr Competition?
Popular Tiatr Competition is the flagship annual contest of the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG), a body under the Art, Culture and Museums Department, Government of Goa. The competition exists to bring about the all-round development of popular tiatr. The commercial Konkani stage form that plays to paying audiences across the state: by rewarding productions that hold to the traditional format while competing at a high standard.
Tiatr, transliterated from the Portuguese-influenced Konkani stage tradition, is built around acts called podd'dde and songs called kantaram. Unlike the Academy's Children's Tiatr Competition, which awards mementos only, the Popular Tiatr Competition carries substantial money. According to the Tiatr Academy of Goa Citizen's Charter published on goa.gov.in, prizes run from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,00,000 across more than 30 categories, covering overall performance, acting, singing, direction, script, lyrics and technical craft.
The competition is held in different parts of Goa, with judging conducted at the troupes' own scheduled shows in specified auditoriums rather than at a single festival venue. Judging typically runs across January and February, and awards are announced and distributed at a specially organised Award Distribution Ceremony.
Distinctive features
- Judging happens at your own commercial performances, not at a separate competition-only staging.
- A Rs 5,000 performance fee is paid regardless of whether you win, provided you consent to video recording.
- The Academy bears the video recording cost and gives you a free DVD copy.
- Winners of 1st, 2nd or 3rd place become eligible for Rs 40,000 per tiatr under the Academy's separate Award Winning Tiatr Festival scheme.

How to apply for the Popular Tiatr Competition
- Watch for the announcement. Applications are invited through press notes and advertisements in the local dailies. Monitor these for the year's opening date, because there is no fixed calendar deadline.
- Print the prescribed application form, which appears in the Tiatr Academy of Goa Citizen's Charter on goa.gov.in and is also issued at the Academy office.
- Fill in every mandatory field and assemble the documents — self-attested Aadhaar and PAN copies, three typed copies of the script, three typed copies each of the song lyrics, details of your 5 or more qualifying performances, and the complete cast and crew list.
- Obtain a No Objection Certificate from the original writer if your script is based on someone else's story.
- Sign and date the form, then submit the complete set at Tiatr Academy of Goa, AS-1 / AS-4, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Opposite Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji, Goa 403001. Keep a photocopy for your records.
What happens after you apply?
Scheduling. Wait for the Academy to communicate the date, time and venue allocation for your competition performance. Judging is conducted at the respective auditoriums, typically across January and February.
Confirmation. Once the schedule is communicated, confirm participation and arrange the logistics, including the 6 passes for judges and organisers at your venue. Remember that you must separately notify the organisers of the date, time and place at least 15 days in advance.
Performance. Stage the tiatr strictly in the traditional format at the assigned auditorium during the competition period, with the live band of at least 5 instruments including drums, keyboard, bass, guitar and 2 blowing instruments.
Result. The decision of the panel of judges is final and binding, and no correspondence regarding results is entertained. Awards are announced and distributed at the Award Distribution Ceremony.
Why entries get rejected or lose prizes
- Handwritten script or lyrics. Three typed copies of each are mandatory, and handwritten submissions are explicitly refused.
- Fewer than 5 qualifying shows, or shows staged outside the eight named auditoriums. Both are hard eligibility failures.
- Format not maintained. This does not void the entry entirely, but it removes the tiatr from contention for the Rs 2,00,000, Rs 1,50,000 and Rs 1,00,000 prizes. Individual artists remain eligible for their own awards.
- Missing 15-day notice. The organisers need advance notice of the date, time and place of the competition staging.
- Passes not arranged. Without the 6 passes, the judges cannot attend, and an unjudged performance cannot be placed.
- Crew double-listed. Artistes, technicians and backstage artists named with one troupe cannot appear with another. Musicians and stage setting personnel are the only exception.
- Recycled Kala Academy kantaram. Songs already used in the Kala Academy Tiatr Competitions are barred here unless the tiatr came across from that competition.
- Named political attacks. Political content is welcome; naming individuals, displaying their images or character assassination is grounds for disqualification.
Where to get help
- Tiatr Academy of Goa, AS-1 / AS-4, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Opposite Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji, Goa 403001. Forms are issued and entries accepted here.
- Directorate of Art and Culture, Government of Goa: Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto, Panaji. Phone 0832-2404600, email dir-dac.goa@nic.in.
- Citizen's Charter. The complete competition norms, prize schedule and application proforma are published in the Tiatr Academy of Goa Citizen's Charter on goa.gov.in.
There is no entry fee for the Popular Tiatr Competition. The Academy reserves the right to change the rules, so read the current year's press announcement before entering.
How to check your application status
The Popular Tiatr Competition has no online portal, login, or tracking number for applicants, so status checks work the traditional way, by direct contact with the Tiatr Academy of Goa rather than by checking a website.
- Confirm your form was received. After you submit the application with all documents at the Academy office in Campal, ask the receiving official for an acknowledgement or note the date of submission yourself. If none was given at the counter, call the office to confirm your entry is on file.
- Wait for the scheduling communication. The Academy contacts each troupe separately with the date, time and auditorium allotted for the competition performance, since judging happens at your own commercial show rather than a central event. This is the main "status update" in the process, so if the competition window (typically January-February) is approaching and you have not heard anything, that is the point to follow up.
- Call the Directorate of Art and Culture on 0832-2404600, or write to dir-dac.goa@nic.in, if the Academy has not been reachable directly. Quote your troupe's name and the date you submitted the application.
- Visit the Academy office in person at AS-1/AS-4, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Opposite Kala Academy, Panaji, if phone or email follow-up does not get a response. Since entries and correspondence are handled on paper, an in-person visit is often the fastest way to get a definite answer.
- After the performance, wait for the Award Distribution Ceremony. Results are not communicated individually in advance. The panel of judges' decision is announced only at this ceremony, and the scheme's own rules state that no correspondence regarding results is entertained, so calling to ask who won before the ceremony will not get an answer.
There is no SMS alert, email tracking ID, or portal dashboard for this scheme. Keep your submission date, a photocopy of the filled form, and the names of any Academy officials you spoke with, since that is the only record trail available if a dispute over receipt of your application arises later.

Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest prize in the Popular Tiatr Competition?
The 1st prize for performance is Rs 2,00,000 plus a memento. The 2nd prize is Rs 1,50,000 and the 3rd prize Rs 1,00,000, each with a memento. Beyond these, more than 30 individual categories carry cash awards ranging from Rs 2,000 for a child artist to Rs 20,000 for the best quartet or quintet.
How many shows must my troupe have staged to enter?
At least 5 performances including kantaram, staged between 1 April and 31 December of the qualifying period. The shows must have taken place in one of eight specified auditoriums, and you submit complete details of all 5 or more performances with your application.
Which auditoriums count towards the 5-show requirement?
Eight venues qualify — Ravindra Bhavan Margao, Gomant Vidya Niketan Margao, Hanuman Natyagraha Mapusa, Kala Academy Panjim, Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir Ponda, Ravindra Bhavan Vasco, Ravindra Bhavan Sanquelim, and Ravindra Bhavan Curchorem. Shows outside these venues do not count towards the minimum.
Do I get paid even if I do not win?
Yes, a performance fee of Rs 5,000 is paid, but only if you consent to the video recording of your performance. The Tiatr Academy of Goa bears the recording cost and gives you one free DVD copy of the recording.
Who is not eligible for the Popular Tiatr Competition?
A troupe with fewer than 5 qualifying performances is not eligible, and neither is one whose shows were staged outside the eight named auditoriums. Kantaram already presented in the Kala Academy Tiatr Competitions cannot be used here, unless the tiatr itself was admitted from that competition. Artistes, technicians and backstage crew cannot appear with more than one troupe.
Are handwritten scripts accepted?
No. Three typed copies of the script and three typed copies each of the song lyrics are required, and handwritten copies are explicitly not accepted. This is one of the most common reasons an otherwise complete application is returned.
Can political songs be performed in the competition?
Yes, political songs are a tradition of tiatr and are allowed, but they must stay within the limits of freedom of expression. Criticising individuals by naming them, displaying their images, or engaging in character assassination is not permitted and can lead to disqualification.
What happens if my tiatr does not follow the traditional format?
The tiatr becomes ineligible for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes. Individual prizes are still given to deserving artists from that production, so the cast is not penalised for a format failure by the production, but the large performance prizes are lost.
Where do I submit the application for the Popular Tiatr Competition?
Submit the signed, dated form with all documents at Tiatr Academy of Goa, AS-1 / AS-4, Block A, 2nd Floor, Campal Trade Centre, Opposite Kala Academy, Campal, Panaji, Goa 403001. Keep a photocopy for your records.
Is there an entry fee for the Popular Tiatr Competition?
No. There is no entry fee for the Popular Tiatr Competition. The Academy reserves the right to change the rules, so read the current year's press announcement before entering.
