What is the Prathibha Scholarship Programme?

Prathibha Scholarship Programme is a scholarship run by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), an autonomous council under the Government of Kerala based at Sasthra Bhavan, Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram. Prathibha is aimed at one specific problem: Kerala's strongest Higher Secondary science performers routinely leave basic science for engineering and medicine, and the basic science departments lose the students most capable of doing research.

According to the KSCSTE portal, Prathibha is awarded to students of Kerala origin who have qualified meritoriously in the Higher Secondary Examination and secured admission for a three-year UG, a four-year UG (FYUGP or honours), or a five-year integrated PG programme in basic or natural science at institutions and universities in India.

The scholarship is deliberately back-loaded. It starts modest in the first undergraduate year and rises sharply through the postgraduate years, so the money is largest exactly at the point where a student is deciding whether to continue in research or leave for a job.

Amount by year, as published by KSCSTE

Stage Amount per year
UG year 1 Rs 12,000
UG year 2 Rs 18,000
UG year 3 Rs 24,000
UG year 4 (honours) / four-year UG (FYUGP) / PG year 1 Rs 40,000
PG year 2 Rs 60,000

A student who goes through a three-year UG and a two-year PG on Prathibha therefore receives Rs 12,000 plus Rs 18,000 plus Rs 24,000 plus Rs 40,000 plus Rs 60,000, which is Rs 1,54,000 across five years.

Who is eligible for the Prathibha Scholarship?

You can apply if:

  • You are of Kerala origin and can produce a certificate proving place of origin.
  • You qualified meritoriously in the Higher Secondary Examination. The rank list is built from HSE performance, so this is the substantive test.
  • You have secured admission to a basic or natural science programme, three-year UG, four-year UG under FYUGP or honours, or a five-year integrated PG.
  • Your institution or university is in India. Studying outside Kerala does not disqualify you.
  • You can get the student data-sheet endorsed by the head of your institution.

You cannot apply if:

  • You are not of Kerala origin. This is a state council programme and origin is the gateway condition.
  • Your course is a professional course, engineering, medicine, dentistry, agriculture, veterinary science, law, nursing and similar programmes are outside Prathibha, which is confined to basic and natural science.
  • You are pursuing an applied or vocational science programme that does not fall within basic or natural science as KSCSTE defines it. If you are unsure, ask the Prathibha office before registering rather than after.
  • You cannot produce your Higher Secondary Examination mark list with the roll number used at registration.
  • You are already receiving a scholarship KSCSTE treats as non-combinable. KSCSTE requires the signed terms and conditions sheet precisely so that the student declares other awards; declare, do not conceal.

SC and ST applicants should attach a community certificate, which KSCSTE lists separately in the document set for reservation in the rank list.

How to apply for the Prathibha Scholarship

Prathibha runs in two stages β€” an open online registration, then physical document submission by candidates who make the provisional rank list.

  1. Keep your details ready before you start. You need a working mobile number, an email address you actually check, your Higher Secondary Examination roll number, and a passport-size photograph scanned to exactly 150 pixels wide by 200 pixels high. The size is enforced by the upload form.
  2. Register online on the KSCSTE portal. Open the Prathibha Scholarship Programme page at kscste.kerala.gov.in and complete online registration within the announced window. On successful registration the system generates an application number, save it, because every later step refers to it.
  3. Wait for the provisional rank list. KSCSTE prepares a provisional rank list from HSE performance and publishes it on the same page. Only candidates on that list move to stage two.
  4. Assemble the document set. Student data-sheet endorsed by the head of the institution, self-attested HSE mark list, certificate proving Kerala origin, community certificate if you are SC or ST, the signed terms and conditions sheet, and the e-payment form with your bank account number and IFSC code.
  5. Submit the documents to KSCSTE within the window. In the 2025 cycle the registration and submission window ran from 5 May 2025 to 5 June 2025. Submissions after the closing date are not entertained.
  6. Confirm your bank details are correct. The scholarship is paid by electronic transfer against the e-payment form, so a wrong IFSC or a dormant account is the most common cause of a payment that never arrives.

How do I check my Prathibha application status?

Prathibha status is tracked through the Prathibha Scholarship Programme page on kscste.kerala.gov.in, where KSCSTE publishes the provisional rank list, the document-verification notice and the final list of selected scholars. Keep your application number to hand.

For anything the page does not answer, contact the Scientist-in-charge, Programmes for Women in Science, KSCSTE on 0471-2548402. The programme office has also used prathibhascholars2425@gmail.com for correspondence in the recent cycle. Your institution's head of department is the other useful channel, because the endorsed data-sheet passes through the college office and delays often sit there rather than at KSCSTE.

How does renewal work?

Prathibha is not automatic year on year. KSCSTE states that continuation requires the scholar to score the minimum credit requirement as per the curriculum and credit framework specified by the University Grants Commission under the National Education Policy 2020, and to submit the previous year's mark list.

Practically this means three things for a serving Prathibha scholar:

  • Collect your mark list as soon as results are published and send it in without waiting for a reminder.
  • If you have arrears or a shortfall in credits, tell the programme office rather than letting the renewal lapse silently.
  • If you change institution or course, inform KSCSTE. Moving out of basic or natural science ends eligibility, because the subject condition applies throughout, not only at entry.

Why do Prathibha applications fail?

Problem Fix
Photograph rejected at upload Resize to exactly 150 x 200 pixels before uploading
HSE roll number mismatch Enter the roll number exactly as printed on the mark list; the rank list is built on it
No place-of-origin certificate Obtain a nativity or residence certificate from the village office in advance. It takes time
Data-sheet not endorsed Get the head of the institution to sign and stamp it; an unsigned data-sheet is incomplete
Documents submitted after the closing date Not curable in the same cycle; note the next year's window
Course is professional, not basic science Not curable; Prathibha is restricted to basic and natural science
Scholarship sanctioned but not credited Check the IFSC and account number on the e-payment form and send a corrected form

What are the key dates for Prathibha?

Prathibha follows the Kerala academic calendar. The window opens after the Higher Secondary results are out and after first-year UG admissions settle. In the most recent published cycle, online registration and document submission ran from 5 May 2025 to 5 June 2025.

KSCSTE announces the dates each year on the Prathibha Scholarship Programme page and through the council's notifications. Because the window is roughly a month long and falls in the middle of the admission season, the practical advice is to get the place-of-origin certificate and the correctly sized photograph ready before results are declared, so that registration itself takes minutes.

Where do I raise a grievance about Prathibha?

Start with the Prathibha programme office at KSCSTE on 0471-2548402, which handles rank list and verification questions directly. If the matter is not resolved, write to the Member Secretary, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, Sasthra Bhavan, Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram. KSCSTE functions under the Government of Kerala's Science and Technology set-up, so an unresolved complaint can also be filed through the Chief Minister's public grievance portal at cmo.kerala.gov.in, which issues a tracking number and routes the petition to the council.

How is Prathibha different from KSCSTE's other student schemes?

KSCSTE runs several student programmes and they are easy to confuse. Prathibha is the long-running degree scholarship tied to Higher Secondary merit. Separately, the council runs SPYTiS-I for school students in Classes VIII to XII doing a science project with support of up to Rs 5,000, and SPYTiS-II for polytechnic and undergraduate students with support of up to Rs 10,000 per project. SPYTiS is project funding for a one-year piece of work; Prathibha is a personal scholarship that follows the student through the degree. A basic science undergraduate in Kerala can, in principle, hold a Prathibha scholarship and separately lead a SPYTiS-II project team, because the two support different things.

Documents required

Establishes that the applicant is of Kerala origin. A nativity or residence certificate from the village office is the usual proof.
Community certificateoptional
Required only from SC and ST applicants, for whom reservation applies in the rank list.
Signed terms and conditions
The KSCSTE terms and conditions sheet must be signed by the student and submitted with the data-sheet.
E-payment form
Carries the bank account number and IFSC code for direct credit of the scholarship instalment.
Passport-size photograph

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Prathibha Scholarship pay?

Prathibha pays Rs 12,000 in the first UG year, Rs 18,000 in the second and Rs 24,000 in the third. A fourth honours year, a four-year FYUGP year or the first PG year draws Rs 40,000, and the second PG year draws Rs 60,000. Over a full UG-plus-PG track that is Rs 1,54,000.

Who is eligible for the Prathibha Scholarship Programme?

Students of Kerala origin who qualified meritoriously in the Higher Secondary Examination and secured admission to a three-year UG, four-year UG or five-year integrated PG programme in basic or natural science at an institution or university in India are eligible.

Which subjects count as basic or natural science for Prathibha?

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology and the other core natural science disciplines count. Prathibha is deliberately restricted to basic and natural science; engineering, medicine and other professional courses are outside the programme.

When do Prathibha applications open?

KSCSTE opens the Prathibha window shortly after the Higher Secondary results and UG admissions. In the 2025 cycle online registration and document submission ran from 5 May 2025 to 5 June 2025. Check kscste.kerala.gov.in for the current year's dates.

How is the Prathibha rank list prepared?

KSCSTE builds a provisional rank list from Higher Secondary Examination performance, which is why the HSE roll number is a compulsory field at registration. Candidates on the provisional list are then asked to submit documents for verification before the final award.

Does the Prathibha Scholarship continue automatically each year?

No. Continuation requires the student to score the minimum credit requirement set by the UGC curriculum and credit framework under NEP 2020, and to submit the previous year's mark list to KSCSTE. Failing the credit requirement breaks the renewal.

Can a student studying outside Kerala get the Prathibha Scholarship?

Yes. The eligibility condition is Kerala origin, not study inside Kerala. Admission to a basic or natural science programme at any institution or university in India is covered, provided the applicant can prove place of origin.

Who do I contact about Prathibha?

Contact the Scientist-in-charge, Programmes for Women in Science at KSCSTE on 0471-2548402. The programme has also used the email address prathibhascholars2425@gmail.com for the recent cycle.
