What is the Kerala pension for unmarried women above 50?

Pension to Unmarried Women above 50 Years is one of the social security pensions run by the Local Self Government Department, Government of Kerala, and delivered through Grama Panchayats, Municipalities and Corporations. The pension is administered on the Sevana Pension platform, the state's welfare pension system, and paid out by Direct Benefit Transfer into the beneficiary's bank account.

According to the Sevana Pension portal maintained by the Local Self Government Department, the monthly rate for this category is Rs 2,000, effective from 1 November 2025. That figure is common to Kerala's main welfare pensions; old age, widow, disability, agricultural labour and unmarried women above 50, so an applicant does not have to worry about a lower category-specific rate.

The purpose of the category is narrow and specific. Kerala recognised that women who never married and have crossed 50 often have no husband's pension, no family pension and, in many cases, no earning member supporting them, yet they are still a decade short of the 60-year threshold for the old age pension. This scheme fills that ten-year gap. The Local Self Government Department also extends the category to unmarried mothers aged 50 and above, so a woman who has a child but was never married is not shut out on that ground.

The scheme is often referred to locally in Malayalam as the avivΓ‘hitharΓ‘ya sthreekalkulla pension. The pension for unmarried women, and appears in government orders under the abbreviation PUW.

Who can and cannot get this pension?

You can get the pension if all of the following are true:

  • You are a woman aged 50 years or above.
  • You are unmarried. Unmarried mothers aged 50 and above are expressly covered.
  • Your annual family income does not exceed Rs 1 lakh.
  • You are a permanent resident of Kerala and you file in the local body where you permanently reside.
  • Your family owns not more than two acres of land. Scheduled Tribe applicants are exempted from this land ceiling.
  • The building owned by you or your family does not exceed 2,000 sq ft.
  • You are not dependent on another person for your support.

You are not eligible, and cannot apply, if:

  • You are an income tax payer.
  • You are a service pensioner or family pensioner. Ex-gratia family pension up to Rs 4,000 is the stated exception.
  • You draw a salary or pension from the Central or State Government, or you retired from a Central or State public sector undertaking.
  • You already receive another social welfare pension. The portal permits a maximum of two pensions counting EPF pension, and treats disability pension as the exception to the bar.
  • You or your family own a non-taxi four-wheeler above 1,000 cc engine capacity. Ambassador cars are excluded from this test.
  • You have been admitted to a poorhouse.
  • You resort to habitual begging.
  • You have applied in, or are a beneficiary of, two different local bodies.

The two conditions that catch most applicants by surprise are the double-pension bar and the two-local-bodies bar. A woman already drawing the agricultural labour pension, for instance, cannot switch to this category and keep both, and a woman who moved districts must apply where she now permanently resides, not where she was earlier enrolled.

How to apply for the unmarried women pension in Kerala

  1. Collect the prescribed application form from your Grama Panchayat, Municipality or Corporation office, or download it from the Downloads section of welfarepension.lsgkerala.gov.in. The form is free.
  2. Fill in the form with your name as it appears on Aadhaar, your date of birth, permanent address, annual family income, land and building details, and your bank account number and IFSC code.
  3. Attach the documents β€” age proof, proof of unmarried status, income certificate, residence certificate, Aadhaar copy and bank passbook copy.
  4. Submit the application to the Secretary of the local body of your permanent residence. Ask for a dated acknowledgement; that acknowledgement is your proof of the filing date.
  5. Cooperate with the enquiry. The local body deputes an officer to verify your age, marital status, income and asset position. Kerala's published procedure expects the enquiry to be completed within about 45 days of submission.
  6. Wait for the sanction order from the local body. Once sanctioned, your details are entered in the Sevana Pension system and a pensioner ID is generated.
  7. Check that your bank account is Aadhaar-seeded so that the DBT credit reaches you without a return. An account that is dormant or not seeded is the most frequent cause of a failed first payment.

There is no application fee at any stage, and no agent can charge you to get your name into the beneficiary list.

How is the pension paid?

The pension is disbursed under the Local Self Government Department's DBT arrangement, with funds routed to beneficiary bank accounts. Kerala Social Security Pension Limited, a state government company, is used to mobilise and route funds for the welfare pension programme when instalments are released. Payment is normally monthly, but the state has at times released two or more months together when funds are consolidated, so a beneficiary should read a larger-than-usual credit as arrears rather than an error.

For bedridden and immobile pensioners, Kerala has long used a doorstep delivery route through cooperative sector staff instead of requiring a bank visit. If the pensioner cannot travel, raise this with the local body rather than allowing the pension to lapse.

How to check status and payments

  1. Open welfarepension.lsgkerala.gov.in.
  2. Use the quick search or DBT pension search option.
  3. Enter the pensioner ID issued after sanction, or the details the search screen asks for, and submit.
  4. If you do not have a pensioner ID yet, ask the local body office that accepted your application to look up the file in the Sevana Pension system.

The portal also publishes state-level dashboards, mustering information, social audit reports and the government orders that govern the pension, which is the quickest way to confirm a rate change before believing a WhatsApp forward.

Why applications get rejected, and how to fix it

  • Income above Rs 1 lakh on the income certificate. Get a fresh certificate from the village officer if the earlier one included income that is no longer received.
  • Marital status not established. A certificate that merely says "single" is weaker than one that expressly records the applicant as unmarried.
  • Another pension already drawn. Check first whether you are on the rolls of any welfare board pension; if you are, decide which one is worth more before applying.
  • Asset ceiling exceeded, more than two acres of land, a building above 2,000 sq ft, or a four-wheeler above 1,000 cc in the family.
  • Duplicate application in two local bodies, usually after a change of residence. Withdraw the older application in writing.
  • Bank account problems. An inactive account, a name mismatch with Aadhaar, or an account that is not Aadhaar-seeded.
  • Missed mustering. Kerala periodically requires Aadhaar-based biometric verification of pensioners; payment is put on hold for those who do not appear.

Mustering and continued eligibility

Kerala carries out periodic mustering of welfare pensioners, in which the pensioner appears with Aadhaar for biometric verification so that the state can remove deceased and ineligible names from the rolls. Beneficiaries who miss the window have their payment paused rather than cancelled outright, and can regularise it afterwards through the local body. Bedridden pensioners are verified at their homes on request. Eligibility must also continue to hold: a beneficiary who marries, who begins drawing a service pension, or whose family income rises past Rs 1 lakh is expected to inform the local body.

Grievance and help

  • DBT Cell, Local Self Government Department: 0471-2327526, dbtcell2017@gmail.com
  • Aadhaar helpdesk (for seeding and name-mismatch problems): 1800-4251-1800, uidhelpdesk@kerala.gov.in
  • First stop for any file-level grievance: the Secretary of the Grama Panchayat, Municipality or Corporation where the application was submitted.
  • Escalation beyond the local body runs through the Local Self Government Department and, for delayed or arbitrary decisions, the Kerala State Ombudsman for Local Self Government Institutions.

Keep the acknowledgement and the sanction order safely. Almost every dispute about this pension. A missing month, a paused payment after mustering, a rejection you disagree with: is settled faster when you can produce the application date and the pensioner ID.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Kerala pension for unmarried women above 50?

Kerala pays Rs 2,000 a month, a rate the Sevana Pension portal records as effective from 1 November 2025. The amount is the same across Kerala's main social security pensions and is credited to the beneficiary's bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer.

Who is eligible for the unmarried women pension in Kerala?

An unmarried woman aged 50 or above who is a permanent resident of Kerala and whose annual family income does not exceed Rs 1 lakh is eligible. The Local Self Government Department also allows unmarried mothers aged 50 and above to apply under this category.

Can I draw this pension along with another welfare pension?

No, not as a general rule. The portal states that a person already receiving another social welfare pension is not eligible, with a maximum of two pensions permitted in limited situations and disability pension treated as the exception.

Where do I submit the application?

Submit the filled prescribed form with documents to the Secretary of your Grama Panchayat, Municipality or Corporation. Applications must go to the local body of your permanent residence, and applying in two different local bodies makes you ineligible.

Does owning land or a house disqualify me?

Yes, beyond the published ceilings. The applicant or family must not own more than two acres of land, with Scheduled Tribe applicants exempted, and the building owned must not exceed 2,000 sq ft.

Is an income tax payer or a service pensioner eligible?

No. Income tax payers, service pensioners and family pensioners, serving employees drawing salary from the Central or State Government, and retirees of Central or State public sector undertakings are all outside the scheme. Ex-gratia family pension up to Rs 4,000 is treated as an exception.

How do I check whether my pension has been sanctioned or paid?

Use the search facilities on welfarepension.lsgkerala.gov.in, which let you look up a pensioner ID and see DBT payment details. The local body office that accepted your application can also show the current stage in the Sevana Pension system.

Do I have to prove I am still alive every year?

Yes. Kerala runs periodic Aadhaar-based mustering for welfare pensioners, and payments are held for those who do not turn up. Bedridden pensioners are verified at home, so contact the local body rather than missing the exercise.
