What is Lalima Abhiyan?

Lalima Abhiyan is an anaemia-prevention campaign of the Madhya Pradesh Women and Child Development Department, launched on 1 November 2016. According to district administration records published by the Government of Madhya Pradesh, the campaign's stated objective is to improve the health of children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age, and to prevent anaemia among them.

The name is deliberate. Lalima means the redness or flush of the face, the visible sign of healthy blood, and the campaign is built around raising haemoglobin levels in the groups where anaemia is most damaging.

Lalima Abhiyan is not a cash transfer and not a treatment guarantee. It is a supplementation and awareness drive with a very simple operating model: free iron folic acid tablets made available at anganwadi centres, educational institutions and hospitals, backed by counselling on nutritious diet and on both traditional and modern ways of tackling anaemia.

Crucially, the campaign runs as a convergence effort. The Women and Child Development Department leads it, but Public Health, AYUSH and School Education are all partners. That is what lets the same programme reach a two-year-old at an anganwadi centre, a Class 8 girl in a government school and a pregnant woman at a sub-centre without three separate delivery chains.

Who is covered under Lalima Abhiyan?

The campaign covers:

  • Children aged 6 months to 10 years, reached mainly through anganwadi centres.
  • School-going girls and adolescents, reached through educational institutions.
  • Pregnant and lactating women, reached through anganwadi centres and the health system.
  • Women of reproductive age, 19 to 49 years, the largest group and the one most often missed by other programmes.

Coverage is universal within these groups. There is no BPL condition, no income limit and no caste criterion published for the campaign, because anaemia in Madhya Pradesh cuts across income classes.

Who is not covered, and cannot apply:

  • Adult men. The campaign's target groups do not include them, though the underlying health system treats anaemia in men separately.
  • Women above 49 years are outside the reproductive-age group the campaign defines, and are treated through the general health system.
  • Anyone seeking cash assistance. Lalima Abhiyan pays no money to anyone; the benefit is supplements, screening and counselling.
  • Anyone expecting treatment for severe anaemia at home. Severe anaemia needs clinical management, often intravenous iron or transfusion: at a health facility, and the campaign's role there is referral, not treatment.

Because there is no application, the practical question is not who is eligible but who is on the anganwadi register. Families outside that register are the ones who get missed.

What does Lalima Abhiyan provide?

Component What it means
Free iron folic acid tablets Available at anganwadi centres, educational institutions and hospitals at no cost
Nutrition counselling Information on an iron-rich diet, delivered by anganwadi workers and teachers
Awareness on traditional and modern approaches The campaign explicitly promotes both dietary and clinical routes to raising haemoglobin
Survey and registration Anganwadi centres and the WCD department identify beneficiaries rather than waiting for applications

Madhya Pradesh delivers this within the national Anemia Mukt Bharat framework, under which iron folic acid supplementation is age-differentiated — syrup for infants and young children, colour-coded tablets for school-age children and adolescents, and a course of daily tablets during pregnancy and lactation. The anganwadi worker or ANM is the person who decides the correct form and schedule for each beneficiary; nobody should self-dose from a strip bought at a shop.

How to take the benefit of Lalima Abhiyan

  1. Get registered at the anganwadi centre. Children under six, pregnant women and lactating mothers should already be on the register. If a name is missing, ask the anganwadi worker to add it, this registration, not an application form, is what makes the campaign reach you.
  2. Ask the anganwadi worker or ANM for the iron folic acid supplement that applies to your age group, and for a haemoglobin check. Adolescent girls in school should ask the class teacher, since the School Education department is a partner in distribution.
  3. Take the supplement on the schedule you are given, and complete the course. Iron supplementation only works when it is continued for weeks, not days, and stopping after a few tablets is the most common reason haemoglobin does not improve.
  4. Get the haemoglobin re-checked at the anganwadi centre, sub-centre or health facility after the course, and take the reading to the ANM.
  5. Ask for referral if the reading is severe. Severe anaemia in pregnancy is a clinical emergency and belongs at a community health centre or district hospital, not on a tablet regimen alone.

There is no form to fill, no fee to pay and no document to produce at any step.

Why the campaign exists

Anaemia in Madhya Pradesh is widespread among exactly the four groups the campaign targets, and the harm compounds across generations. An anaemic adolescent girl becomes an anaemic mother; maternal anaemia raises the risk of low birth weight and poor growth in the child; and the anaemic child grows into an anaemic adolescent. State government publications on social protection describe the campaign as a nutrition and anaemia-prevention effort delivered through anganwadi centres, schools and health facilities precisely so that this cycle can be broken at more than one point at the same time.

The awareness half of the campaign matters as much as the tablets. A great deal of anaemia in the state is dietary, and the campaign's counselling component focuses on iron-rich foods, on combining iron sources with vitamin C, and on correcting the belief that pallor and tiredness in women are normal rather than treatable.

Where to raise a problem

  • Anganwadi worker and supervisor, the first point of contact for missing registration or a stock-out of tablets at the centre.
  • Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) at the project office, for persistent supply problems across a cluster of centres.
  • District Programme Officer, Women and Child Development, for district-level issues.
  • CM Helpline 181, the state's general grievance line, which accepts complaints against departments and tracks them to a resolution.

Lalima Abhiyan is free at every point. No payment is due to an anganwadi worker, teacher or health worker for tablets, screening or counselling given under the campaign.

Frequently asked questions

What is Lalima Abhiyan?

Lalima Abhiyan is Madhya Pradesh's anaemia-prevention campaign, launched on 1 November 2016 by the Women and Child Development Department to improve the health of children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and women of reproductive age. It provides free iron folic acid tablets through anganwadi centres, educational institutions and hospitals.

Who is covered by Lalima Abhiyan?

The campaign covers children aged 6 months to 10 years, school-going girls and adolescents, pregnant and lactating women, and women of reproductive age between 19 and 49 years. District administrations in Madhya Pradesh list these four groups as the target beneficiaries.

Do I have to apply for Lalima Abhiyan?

No. There is no formal application process. Beneficiaries are identified through surveys and registration carried out by anganwadi centres and the local Women and Child Development department, so the campaign reaches people rather than waiting for them to come forward.

Are the iron tablets free?

Yes. Iron folic acid tablets are made available free of cost at anganwadi centres, educational institutions and hospitals under the campaign. No family is expected to buy them.

Which departments run Lalima Abhiyan?

The Women and Child Development Department leads the campaign, working with the Public Health, AYUSH and School Education departments. That convergence is what allows tablets to be distributed at anganwadi centres, schools and health facilities at the same time.

Is Lalima Abhiyan a permanent scheme?

Lalima Abhiyan was launched as a three-year campaign in mission mode from 1 November 2016, and district administrations in Madhya Pradesh continue to list it among their Women and Child Development schemes. Anaemia supplementation itself continues year-round through the anganwadi and health systems irrespective of campaign cycles.

Where do I get the tablets if there is no anganwadi nearby?

Ask at the nearest government school, sub-centre, primary health centre or community health centre. The campaign deliberately places tablets in anganwadi centres, educational institutions and hospitals so that at least one of the three is within reach.
