Distribution of Certified Seeds of Maize
Tamil Nadu state government scheme
Distribution of Certified Seeds of Maize is a Tamil Nadu subsidy under the Food and Nutrition Security Mission that gives maize growers hybrid seed at Rs 100 per kg or 50 per cent of the cost, whichever is less. Farmers in 9 notified maize districts apply with chitta, adangal and Aadhaar at the Agricultural Extension Centre or on tnagrisnet.tn.gov.in.
What is the maize certified seed subsidy in Tamil Nadu?
Distribution of Certified Seeds of Maize is a seed subsidy of the Agriculture - Farmers Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. The department supplies certified hybrid maize seed at a subsidy of Rs 100 per kg or 50 per cent of the cost, whichever is less, to maize growers in the districts notified for coarse cereals.
According to the scheme database on the Agriculture Department's portal, tnagrisnet.tn.gov.in, the maize seed component sits inside the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM), Coarse Cereals, which is now carried forward as the department's Food and Nutrition Security Mission. The department's own description of the coarse cereals package lists the critical inputs it distributes: coarse cereal seeds, Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, micro nutrient mixture, liquid biofertiliser (Azospirillum and phospho bacteria), organic manure and Pusa hydrogel.
The purpose is plain. Maize in Tamil Nadu is grown largely as a rainfed or partially irrigated crop, and the cost of good hybrid seed is one of the first things a small farmer economises on. By halving that cost up to a ceiling, the department pushes area under improved hybrids, which is also why an older version of the same component was described simply as a scheme "to bring more area under maize cultivation".
Who is eligible for subsidised maize seed?
You can be registered if:
- You are a farmer cultivating maize in Tamil Nadu.
- Your land falls in one of the notified coarse cereal districts. The department's listing names Perambalur, Salem, Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Tiruppur, Virudhunagar, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi and Erode. An earlier maize-specific listing also covered Karur-belt districts, and the list is revised each year.
- Your chitta and adangal show the holding and the cultivation.
- You have an Aadhaar card and a bank account for benefit records.
You are not eligible if:
- Your land lies outside the notified districts for the year. Coarse cereal allotments are district-specific and an application from a non-notified district cannot be sanctioned.
- You cannot produce a land record. Without chitta and adangal the Agricultural Extension Centre has no basis to enter you as a beneficiary.
- You have already lifted the season's sanctioned quantity for the same survey number. The subsidy is tied to area, not to repeat purchases.
- You are asking for seed of a crop outside the coarse cereals package. Paddy, pulses, cotton and millets have their own components with their own rates.
Tamil Nadu's agriculture schemes routinely give preference to small and marginal farmers, women farmers and SC/ST farmers where demand exceeds the allotment, and the same practice applies at the extension centre when maize seed is short.
How much subsidy do you get on maize seed?
| Component | Assistance |
|---|---|
| Distribution of certified hybrid maize seed | Rs 100 per kg or 50 per cent of cost, whichever is less |
| Demonstration on improved packages (maize) | Rs 6,000 per demonstration per hectare |
| Demonstration on inter-cropping (maize with blackgram, greengram) | Rs 6,000 per demonstration per hectare |
| Plant protection chemicals and bio-agents | Rs 500 per hectare or 50 per cent of cost, whichever is less |
The seed rate is a per kilogram cap with a percentage cap on top of it. If hybrid seed costs Rs 180 a kg, the subsidy is Rs 90 (50 per cent), because 50 per cent is less than Rs 100. If seed costs Rs 260 a kg, the subsidy stops at Rs 100, because Rs 130 would exceed the per-kg ceiling. Farmers should work out which limit binds before planning their purchase.
The department's normal delivery method is that the farmer pays only the net subsidised price at the Agricultural Extension Centre or the notified seed outlet, and never handles the subsidy in cash. In years when the component is run as a back-ended subsidy, the farmer buys the seed, submits the bill with photo documentation, and the amount is credited to the bank account. That is why the department's own document list includes both the passbook and "execution or purchase bills along with photo documentation for availing back ended subsidy".
How to apply for the maize seed subsidy
- Visit your Agricultural Extension Centre (AEC) or the block Agricultural Officer before the maize sowing window and ask whether the coarse cereals allotment for your district has been received for the year.
- Carry your chitta, adangal, Aadhaar photocopy and bank passbook first page with photograph, and give a photocopy set to the officer.
- Get yourself entered as a beneficiary against your survey number and the area you will sow to maize. The centre works out the seed quantity that goes with that area.
- Alternatively register online. Open tnagrisnet.tn.gov.in, use the Benefit Registration link (or the same option in the Uzhavan mobile app), select the Agriculture department, the food and nutrition security mission scheme, and the maize certified seed component.
- Upload the land records and Aadhaar and submit. The application goes to the Agricultural Officer of your block for verification.
- Lift the seed from the extension centre or the notified outlet against the sanctioned quantity, paying only the subsidised price, and collect the receipt.
- If the year is run as a back-ended subsidy, submit the purchase bill with field photographs to the extension centre and track the credit in your bank account.
How to check your application and payment
- Ask the Agricultural Extension Centre for the beneficiary register entry against your survey number; this is the fastest confirmation.
- Log in to the benefit registration section on tnagrisnet.tn.gov.in with the mobile number used at registration to see the status of your request.
- Use the Uzhavan app, which the Agriculture Department publishes on both Android and iOS, for scheme and input status on a phone.
- For a back-ended claim, check the bank passbook or SMS alerts for the credit, and take the bill acknowledgement back to the extension centre if nothing arrives.
Common reasons a maize seed claim fails
- District not notified for coarse cereals in that year. Nothing at the centre level can override the allotment.
- Adangal does not show maize, so the officer cannot certify the crop.
- Name mismatch between chitta and Aadhaar, a frequent problem after inheritance. Get the land record corrected at the village administrative office first.
- Allotment exhausted. District quantities are finite and are consumed early in a good season; register before sowing, not after.
- Bill submitted without photo documentation in a back-ended year, which the department's document list specifically asks for.
- Bank account not active or not in the applicant's name, which stalls a back-ended credit.
Key dates and cropping window
Maize in Tamil Nadu is sown mainly in the kharif and rabi windows, with irrigated maize also taken in summer in the western districts. Seed allotments are released before each season and are exhausted quickly, so the practical deadline is the district's stock position rather than a published last date. The department publishes a crop-wise seed calendar on tnagrisnet.tn.gov.in, and that calendar, not a circular, is the right guide to when to approach the extension centre.
Help and grievance route

Frequently asked questions
How much maize seed subsidy does Tamil Nadu give?
Tamil Nadu gives hybrid maize seed at Rs 100 per kg or 50 per cent of the cost, whichever is less. The rate is published on the Agriculture Department's scheme portal for the coarse cereals component of the Food and Nutrition Security Mission.
Which districts are covered for maize seed distribution?
The coarse cereals component names Perambalur, Salem, Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Tiruppur, Virudhunagar, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi and Erode. District coverage is revised year to year, so confirm with your Agricultural Extension Centre before buying seed.
What documents are needed for the maize seed subsidy?
Chitta, adangal, a copy of the Aadhaar card and the first page of the bank passbook with photograph are the standard papers. Where the subsidy is settled on a back-ended basis, the purchase bill and photo documentation of the operation are also asked for.
Can a tenant farmer get subsidised maize seed?
Subsidy records in Tamil Nadu are built on chitta and adangal, so the cultivator whose name appears in the land record is the one registered. Tenants without a recorded interest should approach the Agricultural Officer of the block, who decides on the basis of the adangal entry.
Is there any other maize assistance besides seed?
Yes. The same mission funds demonstrations on improved packages in maize and on maize inter-cropping with blackgram or greengram at Rs 6,000 per demonstration per hectare, and plant protection chemicals and bio-agents at Rs 500 per hectare or 50 per cent of cost, whichever is less.
How do I apply online for the maize seed subsidy?
Use the benefit registration link on tnagrisnet.tn.gov.in or the Uzhavan mobile app, select the Agriculture department, the Food and Nutrition Security Mission scheme and the maize seed component, and upload your land records. Your Agricultural Extension Centre completes the verification.
Is the subsidy paid in cash to the farmer?
Usually no. The common route is that the farmer pays only the subsidised price when lifting certified seed from the Agricultural Extension Centre. A back-ended cash subsidy against a purchase bill is used only where the scheme year is operated that way, which is why the bank passbook is listed among the documents.
