Destitute/Deserted Wives Pension Scheme
Tamil Nadu state government scheme
Destitute/Deserted Wives Pension Scheme pays a monthly pension of Rs 1,200 to destitute women aged 30 years and above who have been legally divorced or deserted for not less than 5 years. Fixed assets must not exceed Rs 1,00,000. Apply at any e-Sevai centre under service code REV-203 or at the Taluk Office.
What is the Destitute/Deserted Wives Pension Scheme?
Destitute/Deserted Wives Pension Scheme (DDWPS) is one of the six state-funded social security pensions run by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, through the Commissionerate of Revenue Administration. The scheme gives a monthly cash pension to a woman who has been left without support after her marriage has broken down. A woman who is legally divorced, or who has been deserted by her husband and has had no care or protection from him for years.
According to the department's Policy Note for 2025-26, Tamil Nadu pays a monthly social security pension to old aged persons, differently abled persons, widows, agricultural labourers, farmers, destitute and deserted wives, and unmarried poor and incapacitated women aged above 50. The state-funded list is: Differently Abled Pension Scheme (DAPS), Destitute Widow Pension Scheme (DWPS), Chief Minister's Uzhavar Padhukaapu Thittam (CMUPT-OAP), Destitute/Deserted Wives Pension Scheme (DDWPS), Pension to Poor Unmarried Women of age 50 years and above (UWP), and pensions to Sri Lankan refugees.
The amount. The department records that the monthly pension of Rs 1,000 was increased to Rs 1,500 for differently abled persons with effect from 1 January 2023, and that the pension to beneficiaries under all other schemes, excluding the disability pension schemes, was enhanced to Rs 1,200 from August 2023. The eligibility and rate tables in the 2025-26 Policy Note show Rs 1,200 per month against the Destitute/Deserted Wives Pension Scheme. Descriptions that still say Rs 1,000 to including the myScheme entry: are quoting the pre-2023 rate.
The scale. As on 20 March 2025, 1,15,370 persons were drawing the Destitute/Deserted Wives Pension, part of a total of 34,36,074 social security pensioners in Tamil Nadu. A fund allocation of Rs 5,421.11 crore was made in 2024-25 for all pension schemes together.
Who is eligible for the deserted wives pension, and who is not eligible?
The eligibility table in the Revenue and Disaster Management Department's Policy Note for 2025-26 sets out four conditions for DDWPS.
You can claim the pension if:
- You are destitute; without means of support.
- You are 30 years of age and above.
- You are legally divorced or deserted for not less than 5 years, or you have obtained a legal separation certificate from a competent court of law.
- Your fixed assets do not exceed Rs 1,00,000.
District administrations add the working conditions applied at verification: the applicant should not be begging for a livelihood, and should not have a supporting relative of 18 years and above living with her who can maintain her. Pudukkottai district's social security page states the DDWPS conditions as destitute, age 30 and above, legally divorced or deserted for not less than 5 years or holding a legal separation certificate, assets not exceeding Rs 50,000, not begging for a livelihood, and no qualifying relative of 18 years and above living together. The asset ceiling in the current state Policy Note is the higher figure of Rs 1,00,000, so carry both figures in mind if a taluk office quotes the older one.
You cannot apply if:
- You are below 30 years of age. A younger deserted woman is not eligible under this scheme, though a widow of 18 and above is covered by the separate Destitute Widow Pension Scheme.
- The separation is less than 5 years old and there is no court decree of divorce or legal separation.
- You already draw another social security pension — old age, widow, differently abled or unmarried women's pension. The schemes are not cumulative.
- Your fixed assets exceed the ceiling, or you are an income tax assessee.
- You are living with and supported by a son, grandson or other relative aged 18 years and above who is in a position to maintain you.
How to apply for the Destitute/Deserted Wives Pension
- Obtain the supporting certificate first. A Deserted Women Certificate is one of the e-certificates the Revenue and Disaster Management Department issues online through e-Sevai; a decree of divorce or a legal separation certificate from a competent court serves the same purpose. Without one of these the pension application will not clear verification.
- Get or quote your CAN. Applications on the Tamil Nadu e-Sevai portal at tnesevai.tn.gov.in run on a Citizen Access Number. Create one if you do not already have it.
- Open service code REV-203, the Destitute Deserted Woman Pension Scheme service, on the e-Sevai portal or at any e-Sevai centre. An operator at the centre will fill the form for you and collect the notified service charge.
- Fill the application; personal details, age, date and circumstances of desertion or divorce, assets held, family details, and bank or post office account particulars.
- Upload the documents. The Deserted Women Certificate or court decree, age proof, Aadhaar, ration card, bank passbook, photographs and the assets declaration.
- Submit and keep the acknowledgement with the application number. Track the application under the status option on the e-Sevai portal.
- Attend the enquiry. The Village Administrative Officer and the Revenue Inspector verify the claim on the ground, and the Special Tahsildar (Social Security Scheme) sanctions the pension. Applications are to be verified and disposed within 30 days.
An offline application to the Tahsildar at the Taluk Office remains available, and is the route to use where documents have to be produced physically. Applications are also received at the Ungalai Thedi Ungal Ooril camps, launched in January 2024, at which 44 services from 15 departments are delivered in the applicant's own locality.

How is the pension paid, and how do you check it?
Pension payment in Tamil Nadu was centralised by G.O. (Ms) No. 333, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, dated 31 August 2024. Since September 2024, bills are prepared by the Commissionerate of Treasuries and Accounts after validation through the Global Beneficiary Master (GBM) and disbursed by the Commissionerate of Revenue Administration across the state through banks and e-money orders.
Two practical consequences follow. First, a name or account mismatch between your bank record and the GBM will hold up the credit even after sanction, so the passbook copy filed must match your Aadhaar name. Second, payment status is best checked at the Taluk Office or through the pension disbursement record for your village rather than at the bank counter alone.
Why applications get rejected, and how to fix them
- Desertion period not established. The commonest failure. Five years must be demonstrable, and an oral claim is not enough; obtain the Deserted Women Certificate before applying.
- Age below 30. The scheme has no discretion on this.
- A supporting relative of 18 years and above living in the household, which defeats the destitution test at the enquiry stage.
- Assets above the ceiling, usually land or a house recorded in the applicant's name.
- Another pension already drawn by the same person under a different social security scheme.
- Bank account not seeded, which stalls the credit after sanction.
Where an application is rejected, ask for the reason in writing from the Special Tahsildar (Social Security Scheme), correct the specific defect and re-apply. A fresh certificate or a court decree usually settles the desertion question.
What else does the pensioner receive?
Beneficiaries under the Social Security Schemes receive a saree (for women) or a dhoti (for men) twice a year during the Pongal and Deepavali festivals. This is the "free saree" component commonly described alongside the pension.
Pensioners are also permitted to draw fine variety rice free of cost to 4 kg per month for those who do not take meals at Anganwadi centres, 2 kg per month for those who do, and 5 kg to all social security beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act, 2013.
Separately, Tamil Nadu distributes sarees and dhotis at Pongal to all economically disadvantaged people drawing rice through the public distribution system under G.O. (Ms) No. 23, Revenue Department, dated 20 January 2004. For Pongal 2025, 1.77 crore sarees and 1.77 crore dhotis were produced through the Directorate of Handlooms for distribution.
Where to ask and where to complain
- Taluk level: the Special Tahsildar (Social Security Scheme) and the Tahsildar at your Taluk Office, who sanction and maintain the pension roll.
- District level: the District Collector's grievance day, and the Revenue Divisional Officer.
- State level: the Commissionerate of Revenue Administration, Chennai.
- Chief Minister's Special Cell helpline: 1100.
- e-Sevai portal: tnesevai.tn.gov.in for application status.
No agent is needed. The e-Sevai centre charges only the notified service fee, and no payment beyond that is required to have a pension sanctioned.
