Financial Assistance to Meet the Funeral Expenses of Differently Abled Person
Tamil Nadu state government scheme
Financial Assistance to Meet the Funeral Expenses of a Differently Abled Person is a Tamil Nadu Welfare Board benefit of Rs 2,000, paid to the family when a registered member dies. A separate natural death assistance of Rs 15,000 and accidental death assistance of Rs 1,00,000 also apply. Claim at the District Differently Abled Welfare Office.
What is the funeral expenses assistance for differently abled persons?
Financial Assistance to Meet the Funeral Expenses of a Differently Abled Person is a benefit of the Welfare Board for Differently Abled Persons, which functions under the Department for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons, Government of Tamil Nadu. When a registered member of the board dies, the family receives Rs 2,000 towards the immediate cost of the funeral.
Tamil Nadu district administrations publish the board's benefit schedule in their welfare listings, and Dharmapuri district records the funeral costs head at Rs 2,000. The same schedule shows several other death-related heads, and this is the point families most often miss: Rs 2,000 is not the whole entitlement.
The board's death and funeral benefits
| Head | Amount |
|---|---|
| Funeral expenses | Rs 2,000 |
| Natural death assistance | Rs 15,000 |
| Accidental death assistance | Rs 1,00,000 |
A family claiming only the funeral head when the member died naturally leaves Rs 15,000 unclaimed. A family claiming natural death assistance after an accident leaves Rs 85,000 unclaimed. The single most useful thing to do at the District Differently Abled Welfare Office is to ask the officer to process every head the family is entitled to in the same visit, on the same set of documents.
Who can claim, and who cannot?
The family can claim if:
- The deceased was a registered member of the Tamil Nadu Welfare Board for Differently Abled Persons, with membership current at the time of death.
- The deceased held the National Identity Card for the differently abled, issued by the District Differently Abled Welfare Office on an assessed disability of 40 per cent or more.
- The death has been registered and a death certificate is available from the local body.
- The claimant is a legal heir or family member and can produce a legal heir certificate from the Tahsildar.
- The family is resident in Tamil Nadu.
The family cannot claim if:
- The deceased was never registered with the Welfare Board. This is the hard bar. A person who held a disability identity card but never enrolled as a board member leaves a family that is not eligible for board benefits, however severe the disability was and however long they held the card. Registration during the person's lifetime is what creates the entitlement.
- The membership had lapsed and was not renewed.
- The death has not been registered with the local body and no certificate can be produced.
- The claimant cannot establish legal heirship, in which case the office cannot release money to a disputed claimant.
- The family has already been paid for the same death under the same head.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Death certificate | Yes | From the local body where the death was registered |
| National Identity Card of the deceased | Yes | Establishes recognised disability status |
| Welfare Board membership record | Yes | Membership must have been current |
| Legal heir certificate | Yes | Issued by the Tahsildar |
| Aadhaar of the claimant | Yes | Identity of the person receiving the money |
| Ration card | Yes | Family relationship and residence |
| Bank passbook of the claimant | Yes | Payment is by bank transfer |
| Post-mortem report or FIR | No | Only for the Rs 1,00,000 accidental death claim |
Carry originals plus one self-attested photocopy set. The office keeps the copies.
How to apply for the funeral expenses assistance
- Register the death and obtain the death certificate from the village panchayat, town panchayat, municipality or corporation where the death occurred. No claim can move without it, and registering late makes the certificate harder to obtain.
- Obtain a legal heir certificate from the Tahsildar of your taluk. This is what the office relies on to decide who receives the money where a household has more than one possible claimant.
- Locate the deceased's National Identity Card and board membership record, and note the membership number. If the card is lost, the District Differently Abled Welfare Office can trace the membership from its own register.
- Visit the District Differently Abled Welfare Office at the district collectorate and collect the claim form. Tell the officer at the counter which heads you are claiming, funeral expenses, and natural or accidental death assistance as applicable.
- Fill the form completely and attach self-attested copies of the death certificate, identity card, legal heir certificate, your Aadhaar, the ration card and your bank passbook.
- Add the accident evidence if applicable. For the Rs 1,00,000 accidental death claim, attach the post-mortem report, FIR or equivalent record establishing that the death was accidental.
- Submit the claim and take an acknowledgement with the file number and date.
- Follow up at the same office and watch the claimant's bank account for the credit.
How to check the status of a claim
There is no public online tracker for Welfare Board claims. The working route is:
- Keep the acknowledgement with the file number issued at the office.
- Follow up at the District Differently Abled Welfare Office. District websites publish the office phone number: Dharmapuri lists 04342 230050 and Ranipet 04172 274177, for example.
- Call the department's toll-free helpline 1800-425-0111, or use WhatsApp video call 9499933703 if you are hearing impaired.
- Escalate to the State Commissionerate for the Differently Abled, Chennai, through scd.tn.gov.in, if the claim remains pending.
Why claims fail, and how to avoid it
- The deceased was never a registered board member. The commonest and most irreversible reason. Any differently abled person in Tamil Nadu holding an identity card should enrol with the Welfare Board now, not later.
- Membership lapsed and was not renewed before the death.
- No death certificate, because the death was never registered with the local body.
- No legal heir certificate, which stalls the file at verification even where everything else is in order.
- Accidental death claimed without evidence, in which case the office may settle at the natural death rate of Rs 15,000 rather than Rs 1,00,000.
- Name mismatch between the identity card, the death certificate, the legal heir certificate and the claimant's bank account. Reconcile these before submitting.
- Claiming only one head. Not a rejection, but the most expensive mistake families make.
Register with the Welfare Board โ the practical advice
The single most useful thing a differently abled person in Tamil Nadu can do for their family is to enrol as a member of the Welfare Board for Differently Abled Persons while they are alive. The identity card and the board membership are two different things, and only the second creates the death, funeral, marriage, delivery and education entitlements.
The board's published benefit schedule in district listings
| Benefit | Amount |
|---|---|
| Accidental death | Rs 1,00,000 |
| Natural death | Rs 15,000 |
| Funeral expenses | Rs 2,000 |
| Marriage assistance | Rs 2,000 |
| Delivery expenses | Rs 6,000 |
| Education support for members' children | Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,000 |
| Spectacles | Rs 500 |
Enrolment is at the District Differently Abled Welfare Office in the district collectorate, on the strength of the disability certificate and the National Identity Card.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the funeral expenses assistance for a differently abled person?
Rs 2,000, paid by the Tamil Nadu Welfare Board for Differently Abled Persons to the family of a registered member. District administrations including Dharmapuri publish the funeral costs head at Rs 2,000.
Is that the only death benefit available?
No. The same board separately pays Rs 15,000 for a natural death and Rs 1,00,000 for an accidental death. Ask the District Differently Abled Welfare Office to process every head the family is entitled to in one visit.
Who can claim the assistance?
The legal heirs or family members of a registered member of the Welfare Board for Differently Abled Persons. The deceased must have been a registered member.
What if the person was never registered with the Welfare Board?
No board assistance is payable. This is the hard bar, and it is why differently abled persons in Tamil Nadu are urged to enrol with the board during their lifetime rather than relying on the identity card alone.
Where is the claim submitted?
At the District Differently Abled Welfare Office in the district collectorate. Applications for board death benefits are physical, not online.
Which document proves who should receive the money?
A legal heir certificate issued by the Tahsildar. Where a household has more than one possible claimant, this is what the office relies on to release payment correctly.
How quickly should the claim be filed?
As soon as the death certificate is available. No last date is published, but funeral assistance is meant to meet an immediate cost and delay serves no purpose.
Is this the same as the Adi Dravidar Welfare funeral rites assistance?
No. The Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department runs a separate funeral rites assistance for poor Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe families. This Rs 2,000 benefit is a Welfare Board benefit for registered differently abled members.
